The “Golden Gate”, the opening of the San Francisco Bay with the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge, was a symbol of freedom for many people. Cynically, prisoners of the infamous Alcatraz can enjoy a beautiful view on this monument at their prison yard. Right there, players slip into the role of the prisoner Joe.

"1954: Alcatraz" takes place in San Francisco of the 50’s. Joe was sentenced to 40 years imprisonment due to an armed robbery and he is eager to break out of "The Rock". Therefore, he needs help from his wife Christine who is facing her own problems in San Francisco. Their gangster fellow Mickey threatens Christine to kill her if she refuses to hand over the swag. However, where is the prey? Joe only knows where the hideout is and, therefore, the entire North Beach is searching for the jackpot.

But the Marquis is no ordinary wizard; he's a human-sized talking white rabbit who lives in a world where magic is very, very real. And dangerous. On the journey through his new mentor's home of Mousewood, a land filled with magical creatures and other talking animals, Jerry discovers that he was chosen to play a crucial role in confronting an evil force threatening to tear apart the fabric of reality. But to do so, he'll first need to overcome his greatest fear.

Nando’s World
oyoc7.jpg

The Story takes place in a world where nature has been completely reconstructed by mankind, the last non-cybernetic animals are confined in zoo-museums, forests of electronic trees replace the natural ones, merging with the endless gray areas of the country, and once populated cities are now ghost towns.
Even old age has been easily forgotten: in fact only few people decided not to use the Rejuvenating Medicine Yo-Yo-Fe – Young Young Forever. These strange, independent men and women live in controlled small towns, placed between the desert and the Electronic Forest no.1, called Cities of the Elderly.
The adventure starts in one of these cities. It could seem a dormant place, where nothing happens, but it will be the beginning of a bizarre and challenging journey. Nando will start a journey that will bring him through unknown environments, with their strange communities, and he will meet eccentric characters and their imaginary worlds

The Inner World
UjrQg.jpg

Contrary to the laws of physics, “Asposia” is an enormous, hollow space surrounded by an infinite expanse of earth. The world’s air is provided through three wind fountains, but as one wind fountain after the other petered out and the wind gods came to “Asposia”, all of the sudden Robert found himself in the middle of a whirlwind. Together with the help of the mysterious thief Laura, his best intentions and no clue whatsoever, Robert sets off on his adventure to discover the secret of the wind’s disappearance.

Murder in Theran’s Alleys 1933
mh6La.jpg

A series of brutal and frightening murders have satters the city of Tehran in 1933. Tortured before being cut to pieces, the victims are innocent children living downtown, and there seems to be no clear motive behind the murders. Tehran’s media doesn’t help the case, by flooding the newsstands and alleys with purely hysteric stories. Just one journalist, a man called Sarsolooki, actually seems to know more. He soon becomes an important informant for Detective Afshar and the whole police.

Or, are they haunted by those who went before?

Am30A.jpg

The supernatural thriller will continue a story first introduced in Barrow Hill and is set within the same dark landscape. Cornwall is a land of standing stones, Neolithic tombs and ancient powers. Mixing archaeological thriller, with deep puzzle solving,.

OrVz5.jpg

Join young ghost-hunters Nigel Danvers and Lucy Reubans, as they begin a new 'Crown' mystery:
Hallowed Isle lies just off the coast of Saxton, on England's windswept coast. It is a moody, melancholy place; haunted by those who lived, worked and died there. The Samaritan Paradox
tnuop.png

The Samaritan Paradox is set in Sweden in the 80's. Ord Salamon has agreed to help Sara Bergwall find the book her father, Jonatan Bergwall, wrote before he died. During the course of this treasure hunt, he learns that Jonatan was investigating the weapons industry, and more specifically some covert affairs with foreign dictatorships.
But more questions arise. What is the book about, and why does Sara want Ord to find it for her? Did her Alzheimer's-stricken mother know the secret before she grew too demented to share it? And how did Jonatan actually die?

Face Noir
Face Noir 2

XmoIE.jpg

The Black Thursday. That is how the press rechristened that October 24th, 1929, a day in which U.S. began to face the darkest years of his history: the Great Depression years. All the great values professed by this nation vanished within a couple of months, the American dream was dead and trust in God begun to shake.
Few years had been enough for people to show their real side: false, mean and, above all, open to bribery. But the one thing I would have never imagined is how far corruption had gone; so far that somebody would actually try to bribe God.
And now here I am, a gun barrel pointed at me, a corpse on my conscience, and a young lady to protect. How could this ever happen? How is it possible that everything has stemmed from a series of coincidences?
Do you believe in Destiny? ...I don`t.

Jonathan Blow's new exploration-puzzle game on an uninhabited island.

Wretcher
CMhuj.png

Wretcher is a horror point-and-click adventure game that strives to follow the old ways. Its style is heavily influenced by Clock Tower, the first horror adventure game of its kind (and still one the best), but also by Alone in the Dark and Silent Hill.

The Bum (AGS Title)
KQIj5.png

The game tells a story of a homeless man who communicates with the world using an old sock on his right hand. He's a huge football fan and plays it a lot near his backalley. One day he gets mugged by a wandering bully and looses his precious ball in the process. Now he must pull himself together, team up with a local superhero, find a new ball and confront his oppressor again.

Randal's Monday
fzZwL.jpg

"Randal's Monday" is a Graphic adventure game in development, created by two enthusiastic fans of the genre. We offer a twisted story that everybody will enjoy, with several references to the popular culture (especially videogames from all eras).
Randal Hicks, the main character, a kleptomaniac, sociopath and terrible friend, will find himself involved in some paranormal incidents that will test his skills, dexterity and sanity. Everything revolves around a ring. A priceless ring that only cost half a grape gum. An engagement ring...A cursed ring...
Randal will live the worst day of his life over and over again. He'll have to do everything necessary to fix the situation he has caused. Even if it means going to jail or destroying humanity. He'll have to deal with angry cops, common delinquents, retired priests, incompetent box-office clerks and even some talking skeletons. Shots, kicks, blood, money, time looks and a lot of pissed off people. Randall will have to fight to get the ring and his life back, before the universe collapses. Nobody says it's going to be easy, but it's worth a shot.

Stasis

0HaVM.jpg

Disoriented, drowsy and in pain, John Maracheck opens his eyes. There is nothing to greet him but the static of a nearby monitor and a cold steel floor. Thick, green liquid covers the floor and then his body, leading to trail to a nearby, steaming stasis-pod. He slowly gets to his feet, trying to take in his surroundings. Where is his wife? His daughter? What the hell is going on…?
Stasis is an adventure game that puts you in control of John Maracheck, a man searching for his family in a seemingly abandoned research facility. Going back to classic adventure game mechanics, you are required to solve puzzles and use objects around you to progress and to find Maracheck’s family.
Graphically, Stasis is fairly unique in the adventure game genre, opting for highly detailed isometric graphics, as opposed to the more classic ‘side on’ views of other adventure games. Richly detailed rooms and fluid animations create an immersive environment for the player to explore, with danger lurking in every shadow.
The stasis-plug suit gives you direct access to an Emergency Medical Kit. This is a piece of equipment that has the ability to break down any object of a certain weight and size into its base elements and store it for future use. While normally used to store small medical supplies, Maracheck uses it as an easy way to keep and transport object he has found. Objects can be stored, accessed, combined and brought back into the ‘real’ world at any moment.
At its core, Stasis is a story about an ordinary man in an extraordinary situation.
Trapped in a place where humanity’s horrors come out to play, how far would you go to protect your family?

Fran Bow

lPacO.png

Fran Bow is a point and click adventure with a touch of horror. You play as Fran Bow, a little girl with a unique perception of the world around her. Her parents are brutally murdered and the only thing she has left is her cat and aunt Grace who takes care of her. But something happens, her cat vanishes and she is taken to an asylum for mad children where she loses her memory. One day the cat appears outside her window and she starts to plot her escape… During her way back home she will unlock fragments of her memory about the murder of her parents and finally discover who did it.

Ah, there the legacy developers are. Nice work. As far as non-Japanese stuff goes, that's all of them on my list and more.

However, I would bet that Samorost 3 would be 2013, since we know that it's been in development in some sense for over 1 1/2 years.

All in all, how the year turns out will be largely determined by how well the crowd-funding pays off. Even without it, it's looking to be a solid year with far fewer disappointments from Europe than 2012 had.

What an amazing, nice thread this is! Will keep an eye on it. My last Point & Click was Anna.

They're not doing a graphic adventure game next, but a role-playing game based on an Italian tabletop property. I thought it was an exciting game, so hopefully they're just cashing in to fund their next one.

Awesome thread! Subscribed.

So I really, really like fantasy adventures with beautiful 2D art and clever dialogue (think Curse of Monkey Island). I just finished Deponia, and while I liked it in many aspects (the art direction is gorgeous), I thought that the puzzles were merely alright, and I hated Rufus. Recommend me some recent games?

Subbed! I have SO many P+C games to get through, but I'll be sure to be buying more thanks to this thread.

Edit: More of those need to be on Steam :'(

How could I forget Samorost 3. Have added it. Know there will be more and obvious ones too. I'm looking forward to tracking the year and trying my best to play the majority of what I have listed. Certainly a LOT have me interested already.

I really need to get back into the genre. I have been keeping an eye on it and see there is a lot of quality for me to sample, I just have not put the time into it.

Any recommendations for P&C adventure games released in the last 5 years or so?

Oh, if you guys need to kill 1 hour after New Year's Day festivities, may I recommend an old game called Pock's Friend? http://kiltedmoose.blogspot.com/2012/07/pocks-friend-pc.html It's free and in-browser, and the developer said on his website that he was inspired by Moon: Remix R.P.G. Adventure (although it reminds me more of Endonesia by some of the same people; https://twitter.com/Route24/status/27512022557 and he wants Moon 2!) and this The Neverending Story-type game http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/nanatsukaze/nanatsukaze.htm The Story Of The Island's 7 Winds.

It's fun. http://vimeo.com/1665256

I just started up Quest For Glory from the GOG sale. Great game, especially in VGA, but is it exceptionally grindy? I started a mage which may have been a mistake considering I have to farm silver to get scrolls.

For those who might have some interest in the ancient form of adventure gaming, the so-called interactive fiction (or text adventures), Activision just put out an iOS collection including 27 Infocom games for $9.99. The collection comes with a lot of bonus materials (manuals, maps, hints, feelies, etc.) and a slightly semplified interface.

I've bought "The Last Express" last year, art style is workable in todays climate. but http://howlongtobeat.com/gamebreakdown.php?gameid=5254 is saying 60 hours to beat the game? any truth to this? way too long for me. even 15 hours pushes it for me.

I think a normal playthrough should be in the 10/12h range. It has some dead ends and situations were you can act differently during different runs, but 60h is very off for an estimate.

do you recommend the game, I rather play some more recent titles, but since I bought it, I feel I need to beat it.

.
suspect, brings back memories. isn't that the text game you had to be at certain points to witness the crime and it happened in real time.

Even though sometimes it plays like an experiment in game design (with rotoscope graphics, a rarely-used-before-or-after real-time gameplay, a clever use of subtitles and different languages, etc.) and, because of this, it seems a little rough around the edges, it's still one of my favourite adventure games!

EDIT: I think the one where you witness the murder (in second person, of course) is Witness. Suspect is the one where you are at a party and you become the prime suspect in a murder case. Both (along with Deadline) are played in 'fake real-time', since the clock doesn't tick if you don't do anything, but you still have to be in the right place at the right time or you won't see/hear that crucial bit of info. In another Infocom adventure, Border Zone, time passes even if you don't type anything (and that's true for The Last Express too).

2013 is looking goood; the year of the kickstarter point 'n clicks!

What adventure game do you guys recommend for iPad? I've played the 2 Monkey Island games and Beneath a Steel Sky.

If you liked Monkey Island, give Flight of the Amazon Queen a try. It doesn't have pirates (has a Indiana Jones-esque protagonist) but it has similar nonsensical humor.

Finished it a couple of days ago; really liked the setting (strong Beneath a Steel Sky vibes). Wished it was a bit longer, so the story could be fleshed out a little bit more, and there would be more locations to visit.

No Syberia 3 and The Longest Journey sequel on the list?

I had Syberia 3 but It's listed for 2014 release.
Dreamfall Chapter is in the kickstarter list as that will go live early 2013, alongside some material.

I did forget about Dracula: The Shadow of the Dragon though, which is a continuation of the Dracula series of games from 2000 onward, will have to add it

Great recommendation. It's an awesome game - some of the puzzles are a little strange, but only a few! :)

Fester Mudd: Curse of the Gold looks excellent! Hope the story can hold up to the greatness of the 90's!

I picked up Resonance, is there anyway to run the game in 1920x1200 or windowed mode? My monitor acts really weird and displays NOT IN NATIVE MODE in the middle of my screen if I dont.

Was it really necessary for Activision to lie? Undiscovered Underground came out in 1997 to promote Zork: Grand Inquisitor.

Great OP, and scrolling through the OP doe show off one great thing about this genre. How vastly different these games can be in term of art style. What amazing variety being showcased by all those games listed!

Now there is no excuse not to try Fester Mudd Episode 1 when it is released.

http://groupees.com/bagb

Get Fester Mudd for FREE as part of this Steam Greenlight bonus bundle!! As an added bonus you get the VGA remake of Leisure Suit Larry 1 just in time to prepare you for the Reloaded version coming in March!!! WAY COOL!!!!!

AND Leisure Suit Larry 1 VGA too, not a bad deal.
Also on a side note, with that bundle you get La-Mulana which is worth the purchase alone.

Great OP, and scrolling through the OP doe show off one great thing about this genre. How vastly different these games can be in term of art style. What amazing variety being showcased by all those games listed!
