Halo |OT18| We're Back Baby!

Stinkles

Clothed, sober, cooperative
DICE, for reasons beyond the people that play their games, thinks that as many systems as possible should be doable only in-game and not in menus. Party system is an automated system that happens in-game, loadouts can only be changed in-game.

It makes sense in one regard, in that you can test it out right away. And I suppose almost nobody DOESN'T have a smart glass device these days.

Also, I know I am full of all the Kool Aid, but I am absolutely LOVING my Xbone. It's closer experientially to the first panel of "What Xbone owners think they look like" than the last panel. Real life anecdote:

Somebody from this forum texts me a long-ass link, I snap IE, load up Outlook web (which my texts are connected to), and watch the link in snapped mode without quitting the game. Then immediately and seamlessly bought the thing they recommended. (PDP Kinect 2stand which is apparently sold out all over the world and Mike PDP is now a zillionaire). All without moving except to grunt.

I did. You know what I love about KI?

You can start chaining combos based on muscle memory from decades of SF, KoF, even MK and ore often than not, you will get real results. So it rewards OG gamers who are doing the "deep" version of button mashing.

I was also stunned to see just how deep the game's combat system is. Like, in some ways the original KI was gimmicky - and it couldn't really hang with the Japanese games in terms of subtlety, but if I'm not mistaken ( and proper fighting game dudes can feel free to correct me) this is actually the real deal.

Old KI combos work in the new KI too. Sabrewulf has a similar combo from the original KI. I also like that the rank system makes it possible to get demoted if you lose ; )

You can do it in-game, and on the smartglass/companion app/web, but not, for whatever reason, from the main menu. Took me a while to figure out what I was doing wrong.

Yeah I also searched for it in the main menus, wasn't it possible in BF3? Or BF BC2? I'm sure in one of those games I spent minutes in the main menu designing my loadouts.

But thanks for the app tip, will do it with that then.

This was my exact response to reading that post, up to and including the chewing.

But I think he's talking about the campaigns when he mentions Halo in the talk. Talks about linearity. Clearly in multiplayer there are many, many occasions where you could ask, "What would I do differently?" Shortly after he talks about viewing experience of linear games like Last of Us.

He's definitely talking campaign. Mostly because he says that each player follows a very similar path. In multiplayer, there's definitely different routes that each player takes.

Probably helps you have the amazing limited white launch team version as well.

I am pumped.

Come at me bros.

Also I promised I would show up for the next OT more regularly. Sorry for absence, but shit has been bananas.

Also if anyone is playing BF4 on Xbone please god help me get some weapons. I am so bad at it. But it lets me be a sniper at my own pace. Which is just as well because I am lucky if I make six decent shots per match.

What's your GamerTag? I'll add you for some Battlefield 4. Or are you the jerkface "Frankie377" or whatever that keeps spinning me out in Forza? I swear Driveatar just makes me think that everyone who plays Forza is an aggressive jerk. :p

Was it HGS? Was that the link?

Day9 brought up a good point at the end of the match about observer viewpoints. I figured MLG would use Atlas to do the same thing in Reach(unless Atlas came out after MLG stopped doing Reach).

Had some incredible games of Halo 3 tonight. Exclusively playing MLG guarantees a very good map/gametype combo (with the possible exception of Amp/Onslaught). It's so awesome playing Halo without an AR start/bad map/absurd objective setting/Armour Ability threatening to render the proceeding 10-15 minutes an absolute chore. How can anybody argue with BR starts on fantastic maps with sensical objective settings?

I hate Abandon ....

Dat revolting UI. Dat revolting map 'selection'.

That is utterly beautiful. Even with the jagged geometry and low texture quality, the lighting and atmosphere in this game is, dare I say it, unbeaten.

Agreed. Something about CE just feels alive.

I agree there is a playlist place for that MLG setup. However even without all the AA's etc default objective is a world of difference away from MLG style maps. Maps like Zanzibar, High Ground, Coagulation, Burial Mounds, Standoff etc are just never part of the MLG objective experience. Neither is stealth due to no radar etc. The movement for that style of default objective setting/map is so very different to MLG, same goes for vehicles or the extended sandbox.

Again I agree the default slayer game has to have a playlist or 25-40% dominance of those settings/maps but it's not a 100%. Not even close. BTB, default objective and the like need maps and settings beyond the condensed MLG style.

What of randoms vs. regular teams and therefore in MLG style maps/settings spawn killing etc. Again default objective or slayer tries to reduce such things where MLG promotes such things.

This is why I champion variety until the cows come home. Once again basic playlists with player toggles provides the player choice framework to guarantee players match and get what they actually want to play.

Nope. MLG playlist is ranked and therefore has party matching. No teams stomping on randoms. That was another really important positive I failed to mention in my above post, thanks for reminding me. One of the reasons social mlg was a bit garb in Reach.

Those other maps you mentioned were all good but can easily be ruined when a playlist manager thinks it's appropriate to have the same flag return times on both a large and small map. Arm time etc was also messed up in regular settings a lot of times.

Yeah unfortunately BF4's Smartglass integration ONLY works on a tablet for some reason.

Luckily I have a Windows tablet around, but I have a desktop (running win 8.1) conveniently right next the X1 and I can't use the smartglass integration for BF4 on it.

I would imagine it's because your desktop isn't using WiFi or more specifically WiFi direct. Doesn't the new X1 smartglass use WiFi direct to connect straight to your X1 console (skipping your router altogether for performance)? If you enabled WiFi or bought a WiFi card/USB your desktop would talk to it fine, directly even so just make sure the desktop support WiFi direct.

I'm not sure X1 smartglass, or 360 for that matter, support wired connections???

Is this a BF4 thread now? Because I love loading my jeep with C4 and driving around like Sandra Bullock. Remote detonation for the win.

Halo needs C4, a warthog would be great for that.

There are things I could say, but this is a public forum.

Oh shit, didn't even think about that, might be right.

God this drivatar shit is just the worst. Idiots smashing into everyone all the time. HaloGAF drivers are worse than most.

It makes the game more challenging and enjoyable for me, heh. I do get the occasional Driveatar that just rams into me trying to spin me out to overtake me and god does it frustrate me.

So dull. Can't wait until the H5 news starts to roll in.

After reading this week's bulletin, I've come to the conclusion that it is absolutely not worth my time to read one of these until Halo 5 news starts floating in.

Agreed with both. I also hate that a sup-par Halo game, and a lack of news basically renders this thread pointless in terms of Halo discussion to where it basically becomes the HolaGAF thread redux. Oh well I guess.
