NPD Sales Results for November 2013 [Up3: Zelda, Pokemon, Mario, 3DS, Wii U]

Not even 250k for the Wii U. Just 220k. If Mario can't save it, then nothing will. Those are Dreamcast numbers. At least 3DS is doing well, but yeah. The Wii U doesn't even have a pulse.

Poor Donkey Kong. He already knows his fate and we'll never see another 3D Donkey Kong game :(

I still remember that Nintendo Direct with the FExSMT and X announcements when it seemed like Nintendo would turn it all around...

It was nice because the future library finally went from nothing to hey something! Pinning the hopes of a consoles financials on a cross over FE/SMT game and a sequel to a game that (US wise) BARELY got localized doesn't seem wise, though.

I just hope we absolutely get both without having to go through the typical nonsense as we do with the usual 2-3 super appealing but fringe titles they produce per console.

I dont get everyone stating that the Wii U is dead. Its not, Nintendo will continue to operate and support the console for another 3 years at least. The worst thing Nintendo could do is pull a Saturn on the console. It would damage their brand forever.

The top 10 is terrible, this industry is so commercialize now. Im glad I have a Wii U for the different type of games it offers.

Because Mario and Zelda aren't commercialized?

I'm amazed that people expected the WiiU to have good numbers in a month where two goliaths of marketing muscle launched consoles costing hundreds of dollars. People only have so much money to spend.

Yeah THIS concerns me far more than the Wii U. The 3DS not even hitting a million when they had Pokemon + Zelda + a 99$ price point 2DS is terrifying.

Yep. WE all knew the WiiU would underwhelm at best but even the 3DS is doing extremely mediocre numbers during a period where there was so many incentives and aggressive pricing. It really paints a grim picture of the dedicated handheld market space. The WiiU is its own unique problem though as the new consoles are doing very well, at least for the time being.

Man, seeing the low 3DS+Wii U figures juxtaposed with that utterly garbage top 10 list is disgusting. What has this industry become.

Needless to say, 3DS sales were disappointing but the Wii U is abominable. I don't get it. 220,000 for the one company that isn't trying to monetize every menu command.

Well, as they say, if that's what the market wants, that's what it wants, however foolish it may be. The Wii U probably won't get prematurely killed, so those of us who have one won't get fucked.

For the next generation I am thinking Nintendo will come out with some kind of bizarre hybrid streaming unit thingie.

Keys to a Comeback:
1. Open 5-10 more studios solely in North America and Europe;
2. Buy or revive old first-party/third-party IPs;
3. Enough fucking Mario and Donkey Kong;
4. Open the fucking vaults for a proper VC.

Yea I felt like they needed to do these things before the Wii U launched. With the Japanese console market receding as much as it has, Nintendo should have opened new NA\EU studios like way before the Wii U was announced.

Dat hyperbole. Wii U alone isn't going to sink Nintendo.

if you don't count 3DS/2DS as "console" he's pretty much right.

So far, Ninty has struck out with the N64 (33 mil) Gamecube (20 mil) and WiiU (tracking to 10 mil..if it makes it there).

They got lucky with the Wii, their best selling home platform of all time- selling just below PS1 numbers.

where exactly does nintendo go here? their business model clearly doesn't work here.

Good luck with NIntendo greenlighting expensive HD projects for this disaster.

Yes enjoy your PC gaming, says 1 percent of gamers (yes I'm exaggerating). I'll be busy with Killer instinct, Assassins Creed 4, NBA 2k14, Ryse, Killzone, Knack, and Battlefield and Dead Rising. What a piss poor launch lineup that over 4 million people seem to want huh? Lol

I doubt many people bought a PS4 or Xbone for those games. It's not a great launch line up. People bought the new consoles for the potential they have.

Obviously that list you gave pales in comparison to the games available for PC but that's not a fair comparison.

Wii U sales are so bad, I'm not even sure what to compare it to.

I guess I'll just stick to the fiercest next-gen battle:

Vita November 2012: ~220k
Wii U November 2013: ~220k.

After 13 months:

Wii U: ~1.62 million
Vita: ~1.35 million

Well, and this:

Xbox One, 9 days in 2013: 909,000
Wii U, 42 days in 2012: ~885,000
Wii U, 336 days in 2013: ~730,000

Also, how come nobody has spoken PS4 sales yet? C'mon...

Gaming Industry has basically become Hollywood but much worse:

In the same vein, whenever people use the word 'Western' to define a region game, they meant games predominately catered for Americans. That's how much of a cultural dominance the US has over EU.

Yes, attach rate is pointless when the result is crazy low. Do you think Nintendo is celebrating 200k sales for their (formerly) huge franchise?

That has to be a very scary number. What has happened to Nintendo's core audience? We've always expected that they wouldn't buy 3rd party stuff but now they aren't even buying first party software...

Wat? You have that backwards. Casual & kiddie gaming (Wii, WiiU, handhelds, etc.) died. Core gaming dominates.

The only New Ip on the list is Disney Infinity and even that is debatable as being new IP because it's a bunch of Disney IPs.

What do you think the message ends up being for the future? Invest on more rewashed yearly titles.

Take that for what you will, but honestly a medium that goes stagnant is dying in my book.

Who including Nintendo would finance a game on it now? If a mainline Mario game tanks where do you go next? Anyone who thinks Mario Kart or Smash is going to do anything on such a teeny install base is on drugs.

I'm sure I'm way late, but I just looked up the Gamecube's 2nd November: 424k. Damn at the poor Wii U. I thought Mario and the bits of good press might bump it a bit closer than that.

I kinda think Nintendo's business is in danger in North America unless the next console reinvents itself. Wii U is dead but we all know that. The 3Dees is pathetic. Models are low price points, big software, etc. And that's what you come up with?

Long term nintendo has to be like oh shiz.

Dominating a previous gen has always been proven to be overrated when it comes time for the generation shift. PS2 dominated far more than the 360 ever did and it didn't save the PS3 from one of the most disastrous starts ever.

And we've never seen negative PR for a console like we did with the Bone. Everyone, including the general media, was ripping the console to shreds.

I don't think these numbers are good for MS if they want to win the system war worldwide, since they need to dominate the US to have any chance, but I do think, putting things in perspective, that they are a good start for MS to win the system war in America.

MS had zero chance of ever winning worldwide to begin with really.

Does Microsoft really care though? I think they are content with just winning NA (im sure they'd like the UK as well). Fact of the matter is that hardware in general doesn't generate much profit- it's the services and software sales that do. The United States is by far the largest market for these types of "profit-generating" sales. Microsoft is clearly going for that crowd that loves to spend a lot of money and there are plenty of those types of people in the U.S. It's pretty clear what Microsoft is doing here.

The Wii-U numbers simply don't look promising, but I think they will be fine and get past this. Don't troll me, but I think they will be okay. I have to imagine they're making a profit on the hardware sold at the very least, right?

Nintendo as a company is still ok. Remember that walker that Rick shot in the first season of The Walking Dead after he left the hospital ? Thats the Wii U.

Oh, and for the record, I have no problem with the 360, but since MS corporate took over and screwed up the XB1, I have to admit some joy in their failures.

I love watching MS scramble for good news when getting whipped by a company that was on the border of bankruptcy. I have to admit, I'm enjoying the Hell out of this as the MS stockholders will be screaming bloody murder about the entire hardware division

On one hand, Nintendo totally deserves these sales for their half-assed "we'll catch lightning in a bottle one more time!" approach, their ridiculous pricing, over reliance on Mario, and outdated policies in terms of features.

On the other hand, I'm afraid of the consequences and how they will react.

It was just a weird thing all around. I mean, they went out to say they want the core, that they wanted third parties. They added back "normal" controls but proceeded to make a machine not friendly to the enthusiast (New tech over what they've already been playing), nor third parties. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Code:
Hardware LTD Mario 3D Sales Attach Ratio

GCN 2.120.000 350.000 [B]16.5%[/B]
Wii 6.000.000 1.120.000 [B]18.7%[/B]
Wii U ~ 1.550.000 215.000 [B]13.9%[/B]
LOL Fixed your dodgy maths.
Indeed.

Do we have any idea of the overall attach rate for Wii U compared with Gamecube, Wii, Vita, and Dreamcast?

We're just getting NA numbers today, not worldwide.

I didn't know he was specifically asking about the US. That link also provides numbers for "The Americas." Assuming (i.e., pulling numbers out of my ass), that the lion's share (85%) of the 1.75 million listed were sold in the US, that would put the Wii U's sales (up to September, 2013) at 1.49 million (rounded up.)

Jeez, that is god awful for Nintendo and in NOVEMBER. They're literally at Dreamcast levels and it's a shame that 3D World did so bad because it's one of the best games of the year.

Good job for Sony and Microsoft, though. Nothing unexpected.

Honestly, Wii U number are not surprising.
W101 didn't sell well, same for Pikmin, Zelda and Sonic.
Now, a very high rated 3D Mario game was released and sold miserably. The console is cursed, there is nothing Nintendo can do to save it.
The next investor meeting will be interesting, that is certain.
