Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
I don't mind some parts of the Bayonetta story. Or I should say themes. The way Platinum presented Heaven/Paradiso and Hell/Inferno was really intriguing. I love it when stories draw from Christian/Catholic mythology in a way that is less whimsical and fluffy, and more 'real' in the sense that both sides have armies and ranks, engage in bloody, planned conflicts, yet there's still an aura of otherworldliness to it all. I especially fucking love the art direction for all of Paradiso's creatures. The artists perfectly capture that ethereal, holey, and ludicrously wealthy image of the Roman Catholic Church, while still retaining a sense of strength and terror. Fortitudo is a good example of that. A gigantic upside down face with two viscous dragon heads, showered in jewels and wealth, clinical white, with angelic wings. It's a really great interpretation of the holiness and terror of heaven's army.

I also really like the satirical, silly cut scenes. Like the opening, which is totally ridiculous and over the top. Dumb, cheesy dialogue, sexy cinematography, and a sense of fun.

But the story is padded with way too much seriousness (and I totally disagree with the notion the entire game is satire and deliberately silly), along with that typical issue with a lot of Japanese origin games where the dialogue feels a bit lost in translated and disjointed, and not like a polished story should. I skipped a lot of scenes on my first playthrough due to how much I was disliking a lot of the story.

Hopefully Bayonetta 2 finds a comfortable balance between the two styles.

That's pretty much how I feel. I really really like the lore/world and its character design and style.

and I think the story is interesting to some extent

but yeah I think alot of the dialogue is either poorly written, or poorly localized/translated or delivered. Towards the end alot of Luka's and Balder's lines specifically really made me roll my eyes as I watched.

(and I totally disagree with the notion the entire game is satire and deliberately silly)

Yeah same. I don't get how people come to that conclusion really. Kamiya has never made games like that.

With the sheer amount of supplemental text and environmental storytelling Kamiya and his team packed into the game, you can tell the put alot of effort into making something worth caring about.

I think that's what I respect about the story more than anything. They really put alot of effort into making this fantastical world and its characters somewhat believable, and I think they accomplished that to some extent.

Kind of a shame alot of its fans even just write it off as "lol japan" like it's another God Hand or something. :x

Excited to see it developed further in a sequel.

Popped this back in the 360 for the first time in months and it's like riding a bike. No other combat system feels as good as this one. Even just messing around in the practice loading screen, you can see, hear, and feel how amazing this game is.

Will it be worth it to buy a Wii U just for Bayo 2? Hell yes. (also The Wonderful 101)

One of the things that I love most about the system is just the fact that double-tapping dodge immediately puts you into beast mode. It's fucking awesome. It just feels so natural.

The roar and burst of speed is insanely satisfying. It's just double tap --> ROARBOOM and the pleasure center in my brain is firing every time. And the wicked weaves are on a whole 'nother level of amazing.

This is easily one of the most rewarding moment to moment games ever. Every animation was made ot look and feel perfect.

This weekend I fired up Bayo for the first time in ages, and suffice to say, I was pretty terrible. I 1000GP'd it back on 360, and thought I'd start on Hard mode with my PS3. Bad idea.

Got as far as the second part of the first chapter, where you fight on the crashing plane with Jeanne and you have to get 3 torture attacks. Every time I got close to one, I got smacked and the magic gauge went to zero. Tried more times on that section than anything in recent memory (including Dark Souls, haha).

Any tips for someone coming back to the game? I think that initial bit is kind of a trial by fire, as you can't use Witch Time and fighting those Electric/Fire dudes so early on is tough.
Maybe I should just go back to Normal mode and enjoy the game on my own terms? Was looking forward to getting back into the insanity what with other Platinum titles on the horizon.

I came back to it recently as well, and just jumped into Angel Slayer. After about 30 minutes I was doing everything as if I never put the game down. Don't know what else to say other than keep playing. It'll come back.

Hello gents, I have a couple of questions.

I'm trying to finish all the little portals, can I do them independently, for example if there are three in a chapter, can I do one, finish the chapter, then do another, or do I have to do them all within a single chapter?

And is there a menu somewhere that tracks my progress in completing them?

Just for the trophy/achievement?

You can complete and find them all independently of each other.

My woes never end.

I'm trying to max out my health and magic bars, and I think I have, but I didn't get the achievement for finding all the Witch resting places, so I must be missing some still.

The reason I think it's maxed is finally the two health bars are of equal length, and all three magic bars have eight orbs. I don't think it'd build towards consistency, just to distort that shortly after.

EDIT: My woes have ended.

Disappointed at the lack of a Shinobi rep tho

Next week...on the web... RT @saturaprincess good morning Hideki! When will we see a new trailer of Bayo2? Can't wait! I want some details:)

Cool~ :)

Slight bump, but I just finished this today (I had played up until the first dragon boss thing around the time it was released), and I have to say whoever was voting this as game of the year, giving it 10/10s, or even calling it platinum's best game - lol your opinion could not be more wrong. This game is 2hard4me, I couldn't even complete all those challenge portal things on NORMAL, the story never makes any sense, everything costs so much at the store I could play for a year straight and still not afford anything, and who thought those bike/missile levels were a good idea? I'm at total loss as to what amazing things people were seeing with this game, but man the ridiculousness of that dance routine thing at the end almost makes up for everything else. I don't think a game has ever made me feel so stupid that I want to laugh before. Don't worry though Kamiya, your twitter is still bringing me much joy and Viewtiful Joe is like the greatest game ever so I still love you.

you didn't feel the bit where you fight well designed enemies (95% of the game) warranted a mention?

Let me tell you right now, normal gives you like 2-3 second indicator windows for half the enemy attacks and reduced hitpoints for the insane ones like Gracious and Glorious. Normal is nothing.

If you're going to play baby mode, make sure to at least unequip the auto-playing item.

FINALLY got this game for $8 and I haven't played it before.

If you really want to fall in love with the game, definitely try re-playing the game on each difficulty. The game in fact puts you back in for a new game + when you are done. I just love how each of my playthroughs have been completely different with new unlocks coming in when you replay the game.

And of course the Alfheim challenges.

Dead

well not really...yet
I just whipped out the game for the first time in like...2 years.

Played a verse just to get back into it.

yep, everything about this game is still perfect. Think I just convinced myself to do a full run through, lol.

Hey, I have a question to those familiar with Bayonetta.

So I completed the game on Normal a while back [obtaining all of the Health/Magic upgrades along the way] and just started my Easy play-through to unlock the Immortal Marionette [for completion-sake]. I selected it through "Continue" and changing the difficulty there, so all of my items/weapons carried over. However, I noticed that I don't have a full health/magic bar, which I absolutely should, having obtained it in Normal.

Do the upgraded health/magic bar simply not carry over into Easy but will when I choose to do Hard [after completing Easy]?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Easy mode just has a shortened life meter. You'll have it all back when you play it again on Normal or Hard.

Ha, cool that this thread was bumped today. I picked this up just the other day. I had played it a little after it came out, but my Xbox at the time was on its last leg and I could only play like twenty minutes before my Xbox would go bonkers and break the game. Finally got a new Xbox and now I'm playing it again... so much fun. I'm on chapter six or seven or something... just beat the huge boss right before Route 666. Absolutely loving the game for probably every reason everybody else does.

I'm pretty sure I'm not totally getting the battle system yet since I rarely get anything other than a stone award at the end of a chapter. Well, I "get" it to some degree at least, but perhaps I'm just letting myself play sloppy because I can get away with it and generally not get a game over. Definitely going to hit up the next difficulty level when I unlock it. Grace and Glory are definitely the most challenging enemies so far.... having to fight them in the second Paradiso challenge world (the "Alfereim" or whatever it's called) with 3 hits and limited kicks/punches was a bitch... probably took me nearly ten tries.

Is there a trick to getting more money? I don't foresee myself ever unlocking all the techniques, or even more than a couple of the accessories. Are you just meant to unlock all of it via new game+ and multiple play-throughs?

All the subtle (and not-so-subtle) game references throughout make me smile :)

Edit: Oh yeah, I have a question about a certain move. RB+Left+Kick or Punch.... I cannot do this ever. I never have problem with button combinations in other games. Is there a trick to this? I can get it to fire off maybe one out of every seven or eight tries during the loading screens. It's the only thing I can't do with any consistency.

Don't worry about stone awards your first time through the game. And don't worry about the alfheims either

RB + L + K/P? What move is that? What's it do...?

Pressing right bumper, left, and kick simultaneously does some kind of cartwheel move. I can't remember what the punch version does. I can barely ever get the move to initiate though.

I'm glad getting mostly stone awards isn't such a big deal then... Makes me feel crappy though :p

Any reason you say not to mess with the alfheims? The rewards have been nice thus far

Just finished the motorcycle segment about thirty minutes ago. Music was great :p

While I'm loving this game I have no idea wtf the story is... Edit: and I hate these ice skates I just got.

Jintor

Just some of them you probably can't do yet, the airbourne ones are difficult without a certain weapon for instance. if you can do them more power to you

don't worry about the story either

i seriously don't know what move you're describing is, it sounds like a lock-on dodge or something...

Thinking of getting this again. I owned it previously but never really got into it (only gave it a few levels), so I'm hoping this time could be different. I always, always want to enjoy these type of games but sometimes the repetition hits me hard.

How repetitive would you say the game is? Is it a case of walk down a corridor, battle, walk some more, more battles? I understand that's what this genre thrives on, as the actual combat is the most important aspect. However, personally, I'd appreciate something to break the flow a little. Any decent puzzle solving/platforming/general exploring to be done?

Back when I played, there was some kind of of glitch/exploit that required switching weapons mid-combo and it essentially allowed you to rack up insane combo multipliers and big money. I'm not sure if it has been patched out, but it's probably the only way that you can get any of the crazy unlocks without having an insane devotion to the game.

Not really. The game occasionally goes all out into another type of game (motorbike driving, etc) but not that often

Thanks for the reply. I got it anyway before seeing this and I'm enjoying it! I think because I'm taking it slower than I usually do. I typically get overwhelmed by the amount of possible combos and never verge out from the standard, but right now I'm sticking to a plan of learning one new combo per level and seeing how effective it is and so on. Seems to be working out alright.

I had a hankering to replay this last week so I started up a fresh save and I'm going for a Platinum run through Normal to unlock Jeanne. This is game is still crack

How should I mentally prepare myself for the Afterburner verses?

Use the accessory that auto-recharges 2 gauges of magic

the patterns are really easy to memorize and enemies don't fire as much on normal I think. You should be able to get Platinum after a few tries even without the item.

Aww yeah! Unlocked Jeanne

Sucks that I have to start from scratch to use her, gotta buy everything again. Don't think I'm going to get consistent with perfect evade any time soon so that'll make things quite interesting.

Just beat this last night. I love how much this game offers post first-playthrough. Puts most games from this gen to shame by having the OST and a plethora of content that is not DLC on the game once you bet it on normal.

Btw, does anyone here own the PSN version of the game? If so, can you please tell me the save file name? Some companies have this retarded practice of having the digital and retail version of the same game have different save file names, making them incompatible with each other. I'm asking this because I'm thinking on grabbing the PSN version of the game.

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
What is the best place to farm Halos? I'm on Chapter 13 now, but I want to unlock Pillow Talk and Bazillions before finishing the game.

I only have a PS3, and I know that this game runs really bad on it, but I have a friend who bough it, and I always wanted to play it. And I'm not planning on buying a 360 anytime soon . :lol

So, is it still worth it?

I remember that they issued a patch that reduced the fps drops?

It was always worth it if the 360 version wasn't an option. The patch reduces load times (by adding an optional install) but the framerate's still pretty low.

Playing Bayonetta on PS3 is better than not playing Bayonetta at all.
