Steam Machine unboxing

So the Steam Machine is smaller than a XB1(?) bar using mostly off the shelf PC parts that are much more powerful and boots in far less time.

I don't believe that the middle portion of the paragraph means Valve isn't intending to release its own machine at all, but rather it's in reference to the prototype units specifically.

I don't think they are still intending to release their own versions, It's easier to get OEM's on board if you don't release a first party competing product....

Ya. There's something weird going on there...

Nothing weird is going on. These are VERY high end Intel & nVidia parts that are meant to be both powerful and as efficient as possible. Combined they cost nearly 3x a PS4 or XB1, and have a custom case designed specifically to keep the parts cool.

These steam machines are starting to make a bit more sense to me as high end video game consoles. I can almost see them being marketed as gaming machines built with no restraints, when compared to the PS4 and XB1.

I am very interested in this, it looks pretty cool and wouldnt mind having my steam library on my tv....on the other hand, playing something like cs with a controller :/

Yeah, that was brought to my attention a few posts later, though Valve hasn't entirely ruled it out.

Pretty sure I heard they have to return it .

3. If You are selected as a participant in the Beta Program, Valve will make the Beta Products available to You as part of the Beta Program. The Beta Products will remain the property of Valve, and We may require You to return the Beta Products to Us upon request at Our expense (for example, without limitation, if such return is required to comply with regulatory restrictions, or if we feel it would be useful for us to examine the Beta Products to confirm or reproduce defect or errors that You identify). For this reason, the Beta Products are not for resale.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would they need to return anything?

In the agreement, it says we do not own the hardware (we're not free to give it away or sell it) and that Valve may request for us to send it back to them at some point. That being said, I legitimately doubt we'll have to send it back, unless something is wrong with your machine, or they need to recall it for some reason.

By the way, I've only seen that people have the GTX780 version, but apparently there's supposed to be a few differently spec'd Steam Machines that were sent out? (Including one with an Nvidia Titan and i7 4770k?)

Does anyone know if those have popped up yet? Mine doesn't arrive until Tuesday, so I have no idea which one I got. I'm really hoping for a 780 (or a Titan, haha), but obviously I'm most excited about the controller. A new PC is sweet, but the controller is the real hardware I want to spend hours with.

But is this really an issue? You can still play with m/kb.

I suppose... but then i'd have to organise one of those couch/bed keyboard/mouse setups
You should check out Valve's controller video. They seem pretty confident that the two trackpad..circle things can fully emulate both a mouse and a set of buttons. Of course it would take getting used to. But you never know.

Either way, you can still use mouse and keyboard but yes, you'd need to put them somewhere. Thus is the dilemma with TV gaming.

I still want to see how the controller fares with platformers like SMB, FEZ, Braid, Cave Story+, etc as well as a game like Minecraft.

Somebody start making a list of games they want me to try with the Steam controller. I'm definitely going to do some fighters (especially Smash Bros Melee), but I really want to throw as many weird games at this thing as possible.

As I mentioned, I am very curious as to how 2D platformers like FEZ, Braid and Super Meat Boy or Rayman, etc will play.

As well as Minecraft. I've always wondered how it plays with a controller. (I don't have an Xbox)

Are you going to make a thread once yours arrives? Might be easier to post impressions and requests that way. Also, do you plan on making vids?

btw looks like there's a steam group for the testers: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/300beta

iv seen people report 760, 780 and titans as cards that come with it.

You should see how silly I look when I play in front of my TV sitting in a sofa/chair with mouse and keyboard on my legs...

I'm confident that these trackpads are probably a good replacement for most m/kb required games. But competitive games like CS or Starcraft during tournaments probably not ;)

No, it is weird.

The CPU and GPU in the (High end) Steambox are meant to be highly powerful, not super efficient (the consoles on the other hand do target high efficiency).
The XB1 also has an 100% custom design compared to the Steam Machine which has off the shelf graphics cards, motherboards and CPU cooler.

Add to that the fact that the Steam Machine cold boots in less than half the time (bar the fact it has to go though the more complex firmware start up, has to run GRUB2 and uses sysvinit), It does not paint the XB1 in a good light at all.

It's somewhat amusing that since we've long known the specs of both the xbox one and ps4, some people still think that they are designed as something other than the cheapest system that Microsoft and Sony could conceivably get away with. Look at the power target for these systems. Electronics engineering is not magic.

I don't know how many times I've seen people here reiterate that the consoles have a low-power laptop-class CPU. This fact is hand-waved away every time.

What a waste has it connected to a tiny monitor just like he's playing on his pc there. Hook it up to the 65inch be a man not a boy playing with his tiny toys.

I wish Steam Machine beta testers focused more on the Steam Controller. I want to see tests with a lot of games in different genres, detailed impressions and videos, come on guys!

Really really excited by the possibilities, I want a new PC build so bad but I think I will wait for this. Looks promising!!

Next gen is still coming!!

I'm mostly talking about the size. You would think a machine that's over twice as slow and made specifically to do one thing would be able to fit in a smaller case than the steam machine. PS4 is smaller than the XBone too and it's slightly more powerful.

That's some bad design work imo...

Cost cutting + manufacturing for an enormous audience while trying to maintain a minimal failure rate. AMD hardware typically runs a bit hot compared to Intel/nVidia. Yet the fans in PS4 and XB1 are nearly silent. The power they output for the size is still impressive.

A bit of a reach comparison but look a the high-end ultrabook market. The processors in those things are shit compared to a proper laptop. Equivalent performance can cost twice as much or more. Keeping stuff cool in a small form factor is very expensive. Steamboxes this small won't be cheap.

Microsoft was probably choosing to play it ultra-safe after the overheating issues from last gen.

PS4 is just an awesome piece of engineering.

Do some platforms that require fast reflexes like Super Meat Boy.

Try your best at CS:GO or COD once you get used to the controller and see how good you can get.

If you have it, try Red Orchestra which is a little bit slower paced of a shooter.

Try Kerbal Space Program and see if you can do it with the amount of buttons available.

Maybe a game like Amnesia?

Hmmm. Not too sure what else is on linux... Surgeon simulator. Tha'd be fun to watch. FTL, Starbound, and Minecraft too.

Edit: Ah. Ok. Forgot you didn't have to use linux. Alright then add Torchlight II, replace Red Orchestra with RO2 (cus it's my favorite game :) ), Total War (any of them. I just want to see how the battlefield mode would work), any racing game, and Chivalry.

Dark Souls. please, and stream it if possible.

Devil May Cry 4 or DmC as well, to see how action games fare. Witcher 2 as well, in prep for Witcher 3.

Also, do the two buttons on the bottom of the controller feel okay, or do you find yourself accidentally pressing them from time to time.
