Will say the tension certainly skyrockets when your walking through houses in a town that seemed abandoned and next thing you know someone starts talking.

Good to know.

I'm really interested in the exploration and survival aspects of the game but I'm worried that I'll never make any progress because I'm always running into others who are quick to kill other players. Same with Nether and Rust, actually.

the fun thing about dayz is that you dont have to. you can stay out of sight if you plan your moves right.

So I'm unconscious right now in the middle of a big town. I ate some bad fruit like an hour ago and got sick. Will I get better or am I pretty much dead?

There's so very little loot everywhere I go. All I ever seem to find are shoes and pants

Fighting zombies is absolutely awful with melee weapons, there's no feedback from it or sense of actually hitting them. Plus they take forever to go down even with a fireman's axe

That's odd, it must be server lag since the Fireman's Axe takes 1 hit to kill a zombie with the Splitting Axe taking 3.

This game chews up my PC and spits it out. Guess I have more reasons to upgrade now (not like I needed any more though ;P)

Is third person supposed to work immediately or do you have to pass a specific sequence to get it, because for some reason, it won't go into 3rd person view and I have it as my main option

oh man I hit the freaking jackpot after a day of crap luck. Went up to Zelenogorsk and there is a small military barracks there. Found 4 Assault rifles,1 pistol and a chest holster for the pistol.

Finally found a map; highly detailed. Went to a seemingly secluded military base and it was untouched. Just need to find a chest holster and I'm good to go. Love my green mountain backpack. Works well for blending in.

At the moment there's nothing to really incentivize complying, but as a captor you do have a very clear incentive to not harm your target because you'll destroy their stuff. Currently that doesnt mean much since most ruined gear or gear of any status doesn't mean anything right now, but once it does you'll have a clear and very important reason to no just shoot a target willy nilly. Knee capping and head shots will be very important if you want to actually take anything from them.

In terms of making players feel the need to surrender and comply that's a lot harder, they're going to lose their stuff no matter what so they might as well make the person fight for it and likely ruin it in the process.

If they really want to get players to care about their actual character and not just the gear on them they'll have to introduce some kind of character progression or identity to help attach players to the actual character. But the trouble is to make most people care would likely require a pretty robust system that has significant impact on the actual game, which many people don't want, and anything that is simply flavor like character backgrounds, ingame journals etc, won't be enough to sway the vast majority of players into actually caring about their character.

It may be in the future that when spawn diversity is increased and spawn ratios have been tweaked a lot, and most likely dialed down a lot, it will be in your interest to comply because starting completely fresh will much more of a bother than losing half or even 3/4 of your stuff. Then again that may work in just the opposite way because the robber may then be even more inclined to take everything you have since everything may be harder to come by.

Yeah I guess if you were far from the spawn point traveling back might be annoying, but I do think they should add some kind of character specific persistence.

What would have happened if I just quickly exited the game? Is there some kind of server-side timeout that would keep my char in the world for X seconds after a disconnect? I finally just got a ton of really good stuff for the first time, but logged out when I thought I heard some footsteps in the building :lol

At the moment nothing I believe. But they definitely have plans to implement stuff for Alt F4ing and the like with you either dying outright or your character staying in game for 30 or so seconds. You should be good for the time being though.

A really cool feature, that would take some good writing and probably some sophisticated coding to implement would be an auto update journal. I know a journal is planned for that you can write in and I think find on dead player's bodies, but I think it would be great if the journal also kept an track of your exploits without player input.

Things like where you traveled, what you looted and scavenged, who you killed, and the various affects to your person like gunshot wounds, broken bones, sicknesses and what not are all easy to track and auto log in an quality manner, but if they also could record stuff like the more abstract encounters you have with other players, that would be pretty amazing. Though I don't think you could ever write/code for stuff like hiding in a house while a group of players was all around you and you hid from them, or fire fights where two groups of people duke it out but you don't end up killing anyone. Or stalking another player to see what they have or how they behave before trying to interact with them.

I guess that kind of stuff would be left for players to put in the journal themselves, though I doubt most will.

Yup, whoever had the idea that opening a drink should be an ambient noise is an evil genius.

hahahahaha that fucked with me so much the first time. glad i read its a glitch after the first day or two so i could learn to ignore it.

i was thinking though how someone could go meta, stalking other players opening cans of soda all over the place making them think it was the game.

Finally killed my first 3 players. Gunned them down with my M4. Would have killed more but only had 30 rounds.

I kill on sight now, I've literally been betrayed so many times and killed countless times by people even when I am clearly a noob and have nothing worth taking. I'm sorry if I killed you but the playerbase brought it upon themselves.

It's a survival game and I learned that other players weren't helping my survival so instead of trying the same thing over and over again I figured it's time to kill.

Damn. Back on the mod I had the hero skin because I never fired first and the only people I tried to kill were hackers and well they don't die easily(like I did).

Yeah some of the ambient sounds are really annoying. great for tension building I suppose but gates opening, soda cans etc are obnoxious as ambience.

Well, apparently, my character duplicated, then killed... myself. :/

That reminds me of when mob and I were running about and some hacker (or game-breaking glitch) separated each character from their living body and we gained control of a zombie. Shit was weird, looking at my previous survivor body, standing there looking all alive.

So you have that .45 pistol? Found a magazine for it? I've probably seen like 7 or 8 pistols since the beginning at the very least, and not one single magazine for it! I have 18 bullets, tho I can't use it because I have no magazine. At least I have that Mauser I murder people with. XD

(Don't do any abrupt movement if you're being told to stop moving, that's just bad karma to happen. ha ha ha)

I had really nice sessions today with Busta and Synthetic! Crazy stuff happened, we had about 5 encounters with other players, all hostile (or almost xD). I fell unconscious once after Synthetic and myself exchanged shot with another guy, but got revived right after by Synthetic with a saline bag. Same spot in Green Mountain, Busta got killed by either a guy who had just logged in, or the partner of the guy who we had just exchanged fire with. It was so crazy.

Then that guy in the garage that popped out in the back of Busta in that small village, oh man, Him and his big wrench didn't know the trouble he was getting into by meeting us! After telling him to holster that wrench, he got out a pistol! So Busta quickly shot him inbetween the eyes followed by another shot behind the head from my mauser. Then it just happened that Synthetic noticed that it wasn't actually a pistol but a FLASHLIGHT. Oh wow, So funny. XD good stuff.

If ZenVolta ever offers to blood bag someone. Just run far, far away. He still has a lot of work to do in understanding the delicate process of removing someone's blood before giving it to someone else. Case in point... This is what happened earlier tonight.

A bit overkill don't you think Zen?

This is what happens when you try to beat an unconscious person with a badly damaged axe.

Besides the absolutely awesome new inventory system, the lack of music was one of the starkest differences between the mod and SA since I first played DayZ about a year ago.

The music really added to the oppressive atmosphere of the mod, and I miss it in SA. Now, walking through the northern woods is borderline boring. The tension is gone.
I understand some people didn't like the soundtrack because it hindered auditory awareness, but those who felt this way just turned if off. Problem solved.

It seems like it would be easy for the dev team to just patch the mod's music into SA wholesale (just leaving it disabled by default).
Because it would be so easy to do this and it hasn't already been done, the dev team probably has different plans. Either new music or no music at all.

For now, I'm stuck looping this youtube video over and over again. It's just not the same.

I miss the music as well. Hope it's one of those alpher gonna alpher things.

Quite fascinating for a Day Z newb like me just trying to figure if the game is for me or not. You seem to answer my question but to everybody : is the game viable without a mic ?
I just saw a heated debate on the game official forum about it, and yeah a mic would evidently be ideal, but well, not a native english-speaker, not a good hear for accents, social anxiety... it would really help me bite the bullet if the game was playable and enjoyable without it.

Yeah, it's totally doable without, just depends on the people you meet and whether you can type 'friendly' quickly after pressing F2 to put your hands up. My story earlier in the thread recounts how I spent about two hours looting and exploring with a guy all through text chat.

I wonder when they're going to fix the bug where ambient animals make zombie noises. That drives me crazy.

Ohhhhhhh now those noises make sense. >.<

It takes up two slots vertically. Your default pants should be able to fit it since you have 4 slots on them in a square.

On that note, I hope they bring in RE4 style rotating of items. For instance you can rotate your canteen sideways to store it without having to move nearly everything in your backpack to fit it.

Yeah, that would be nice. Off-topic, Path of Exile is annoying me so much with this same problem. Why is rotating just not allowed? :/

So I had an epiphany and realized that I could drink from the water spigot directly in every town. I can drink straight for like 10 minutes and never get full on water.

Am I supposed to get a message saying my stomach is full?

I found this as well, what seemed to happen was that if I stopped drinking and waited 30 seconds, I got the message. So try that maybe every ten drinks?

I was waiting for these guys to make a standalone video. Absolutely hysterical, just like their GTA V ones.

Oh my god, amazing. Loved the 'killer hands' one.
