Had a weird experience with a guy at the Balota airfield. I ran into it from the northeast, and saw the eastern air traffic tower. I figured, shit, this is a relatively new spawn, what's thee to lose? So I run up, and instead of taking the front door, I start climbing up the ladder on the opposite side. Suddenly, this guy decked out with an M4 and army camo comes into view, and he goes into the front door. At this point I'm nearly at the top of the ladder. All I have is a fireaxe, so I really don't want to combat this guy head on. Especially with how slow you move on stairs, I really needed the element of surprise and a good running blow.
So I climb down to the halfway point of the ladder, and sit there for two minutes or so, waiting for someone to shoot me in the back, or for this guy to show up. He eventually gets to the top, and he does a sweep of the outer rim of the tower. I'm amazed he didn't spot me, because he got right to the edge of the ladder. Was sure I was gone. But, he just walks back inside the tower, and I hear him pop a can of beans and start eating. I figure, shit, this is my only chance. I get up the ladder, axe in hand, and run up to the middle of the tower.
He's not there. Weird. I saw him here seconds ago. I go downstairs. Nothing. Check behind the stairwell, take a quick peak outside. Guy's nowhere to be seen. He was JUST eating some food. My guess is, he saw me coming and logged. To me it looked like he just lagged through the building. Anyway, I go back to the top, take one last look around. Go down the stairs again, and there he is, crouched in a corner with his rifle ready, and I don't even bother trying to get to him. He's a set of stairs below me, he has a rifle, just, take my death and maybe I'll get a better spawn next time. Sure enough the dude blows me away, and takes his sweet time doing it.
The weird part is, while I'm sitting at the 'you are dead' screen, talking to some guys in Steam chat, I hear the dude over mic yelling something. "NO! I DIDN'T-", followed by a round of gunshots, two sets of footsteps, and some distant microphone chatter I didn't pick up.
I'm not really sure what to make of that whole situation. A mix of possible combat logging and miscommunication? Whatever it was, it was better than the usual deaths I get in this game.
Next time I'll just head north.
