Because we all know gaming is about selling hardware at a profit, it has nothing to do with establishing a presence in a consumers living room to sell them services or software where the profit margins are better.

Wow I like how this person completely ignores software revenues and makes assumptions on how much profit each company is making on hardware sales. This also doesn't account for the amount of demand for each console and what will happen in the years to comes if Sony maintains this kind of lead.

Maybe my math is off but if the PS4 sold 4.2 mill at $400 and the X-One sold 3+ mill at $500 aren't they almost the same figures?

Why would MS need to drop the price/Kinect? Or bundle it with a game for that matter? They're in the business of making money and right now Sony is not really making more than them despite being a hundred dollars cheaper.

Also, I'm aware of the supply constraints of Sony but MS has not released it's system in all areas as of yet. So while the PS4 will clearly be out front, and I'm sure will stay there due to the price, when MS does launch it will cut into the lead some.

Most of the money is made on services provided (Gold, Music Passes, games sold through the marketplace, gift cards purchased, ect). Both barely care about profits on the console. Making money on a console doesn't matter much if you don't have a high user base to make money off of for the next 6-7 (however many) years of the generation.

Consoles are about install base and attach rate. I'm going to ignore that and look at "profit" and revenue on loss leaders.

That only applies to consoles manufactured within a specific "free trade zone" in shanghai. Sony doesn't have any plants there, and it will take a considerable amount of time to get one up and running. China sales might eventually become relevant, but it definitely won't be within the next 2 years.
