Dark Souls |OT4| Victory achieved for Scamco, text defeated

Thanks for the tips on CD. I was really enjoying playing this game fair (I took the easy way in Demon's Souls whenever possible), but decided to use the hide and seek tactic in the singular pathway to kill him. The handful of decent fights I had with him were fun and intense, but the vast majority were just a joke. It's cool if a boss has a long range projectile to keep me respectful of my distance, but not when he starts so far away that it takes 2 full bars of sprinting to get to him. Then one of the slams does legit AoE that you would never expect from a simple melee attack. It would damage me even if I was 3 character lengths away.

Oh well. I beat him and then wandered into the lava pit and got murdered several times. Lol, what a game. Thank you for being so supportive, gaf.

Ok, I just beat Sen's Fortress. My Winged Spear +3 and my Kite Shield broke somewhere near the roof, and then my Drake Sword broke a short while later, so I finished the rest with Astora's Straight Sword.
Now I don't know which game y'all have been playing, but this was really not hard. The Iron Golem is really easy, I only died by rolling myself off the platform. Upgrading to +10 (like people had been telling me) for this would have been major overkill. Sen's Fortress was like the easiest area so far. I'm upgrading everything I can before going to Anor Londo though, that place looks tough.

Still pissed I missed out on that Lightning Spear though.

Several runs trying to get the Obsidian Greatsword end in frustration and hating the fight. The next run starts with dives and perfect positioning. In the first four hits with no damage taken take the tail is removed... Don't even know why I spent so much time trying to get it for a Dex character.

I was tempted to bone out and just keep cutting off his tail for all the trouble it caused. The boss is cake now.

Poor Sif followed shortly thereafter. He didn't have a chance.

I agree that Sen's not bad at all, but I don't know about easiest area.

You know how to repair equipment right?

So far? I had a way easier time in Sen's than in Depths, for example. Part of that is definitely because I was going through Depths way too carefully, but still. Undead Burg/Parish doesn't count, since I used the Drake Sword there, which made it too easy. Sen's didn't give me any problems. I didn't get hit by any of the traps, not once, and the Serpent Men are perfectly fine one-on-one. The Iron Golem is a joke, almost easier than the Gaping Dragon, and I hadn't even upgraded anything when I fought him.

You know how to repair equipment right?

Yeah, but I didn't have any Repair Powder or Repair Boxes. Never bought any, probably should have.

O&S was pretty difficult my first time but going through it on NG+ I wanted to kill Smough first and man is it a bitch

Maybe I just need to be more patient but in the first part I always end up being stuck in a corner while trying to get Smough to step in front of Ornstein. The few times I got to the second part of the battle I got him to half health and ended up choking or getting one hit killed.

I'm pretty close to giving up and just using a summon

Just beat Artorias. :D
I managed to interrupt his power-up move every time which allowed me to block all his weaker attacks while dodging his stab and jump attacks. Seeing yourself become better at dealing with bosses is really the best part of Dark Souls.

Yeah someone in this forum said something along the lines of, "Dark Souls is one of those games where your skill must improve in order to progress as opposed to most games where completion is solely a matter of time." I really think this highlights the best part of the game. My first play-through was around 90 hours while my second was 23ish. Never before have I experienced such a vast difference in time with a second play-through. In most games I would just shave off a couple hours at most with a second run.

The achievements are pretty weird because -- assuming that you're good enough to beat the game -- getting 100% really is just a matter of time. Kind of disappointing but I liked the game enough that I think I'll go for it anyway.

I've honestly never paid attention to the achievements. What's an example?

You have to obtain all the rare weapons, which include all the items forged with boss souls, one of which has three different items that can be forged, requiring three playthroughs.

The "hardest" one is what SeventhSon just posted, but it's basically stuff like obtain all pyromancies/spells/miracles, speak to every covenant, upgrade a max weapon of each type, and then story stuff you'd unlock in the course of a normal playthrough.

In Demon's Souls some of the trophies were super annoying due to the world tendency stuff (took me ages to get the last ring because I had to be pure white) but Dark Souls does seem more straightforward. I'm going for it because I love the game, but so far only the weapon upgrades seem annoying... and the fact that you do have to play the game 2.5 times to get them all, but I'd probably do that anyway.

The tip to get a +10 weapon was mainly because of anar londo though. But you're on that now I see.

I haven't managed to get Ceaseless to drop down in ages for some reason.

I always have to kill him slowly.

even if you dont do it the first time by running to the arnour, you have to repeat that action in subsequent attempts. So, enter fog door, run tot where the gold hemmed set is run back to fog door.....then and only then will he drop his arm.

You have to wait a moment for him to pull his other arm out of his chest for the drop to become available at all. A common mistake that loses you the chance to cheese him is to immediately start running for the fog gate after you grab the armour, which gets you killed by the lava-spray. Grab the stuff / Return to the body, wait a moment for him to pull his arm off, then sprint your ass off.

I never wait after nabbing the gear and he always follows me.
Because I usually do Ceaseless at low level for the large flame ember early, and usually have base health, I stick on the Stone Guardian's set and use flash sweat, then grab the armour and run immediately, on occasion his first attack can hit, but usually not, I time the roll but more times than not I don't even need to roll and just do it out of habit.

I come in the front way past him, but run back to the fog door the back way - no idea if that makes a difference, but I used to have problems getting him to follow me too, so I always stick to the way that works for me now.

I've done it a few times without the spray hitting me either, just running for it. It worked fine the first couple of times I did it, but then I started failing every time. Different strokes I guess.

Yeah, Dark Souls is YMMV in game form! I could never do easy mode Ceaseless for the longest time so I always dreaded it then it clicked and now I never have trouble - except my Cursed Egghead run I remember messing that up somehow I think the egghead increases your fire damage taken(?) so the spray actually killed me because of 1/2 health too.

Hey guys, hoping you can help me with a problem a few of my mates are having. So they bought Dark Souls during the sale but are unable to play it because each time they attempt to load it up this error appears:

'Dark Souls: Prepare To Die edition executable has stopped working.'

Any of you know how to fix this? I want to play it with them but they are unable to play it.

Cheers.

Started a new playthrough the other day, seeing Patrick Klepek playing on youtube really gave me the itch again. He's ridiculously good for a first-timer btw, never heard of anyone killing Capra on the first try, unless someone here did?

Anyway, decided to go a route I've never really done, despite many playthroughs: pure strength weapons. Got myself up to 36 strength to two-hand the dragon greatsword (from the covenant dragon's tail), upgraded it to +4 and it's a beast, ridiculous. I know it has no scaling, but for NG it's overkill. I killed Ornstein in 4 (four!) hits. Every single running attack staggered Super Smough. The poise damage that thing does is insane. It looks pretty awesome too.

Also, playing on the PC version, but GFWL almost always goes offline after a few minutes. Anyone else had this? Or know a solution?

I started a new play thru last night too. I've never done the DLC before, so I am going to take a break from my SL1 guy that's stuck at O&S and head over there. Going with a strength - Pyro build

So I am getting close to the end (I just took down the Bed of Chaos) and I think one of my gripes with the game is the lack of storytelling. I mean you can clearly tell there's a lot of back story of how things ended up as they are but I had to do my own research to understand what was happening. I don't want them to spoon feed the story to the players but they should do a better job of telling the story because the lore is fucking awesome.

I think I am going to tackle the DLC before I fight Gwyn because I read that after killing Gwyn you automatically get bumped to NG+ and I don't think I am going to play NG+ and I want to experience the whole game.

Yeah, the game goes right into NG+ after Gwyn. Besides the DLC, there are other optional areas you could have missed:

Undead Asylum (return trip)
Painted World of Ariamis
Great Hollow / Ash Lake

So I decided to start a Soul Level 1 run! Just defeated the gargoyles. So far so good!

Some questions:

- Is pyromancy legit? Is it too overpower? Do people usually use it on SL1 runs? ( i haven't used it yet )
- Should I use the ring of favor and protection? Or am I gonna need the 2 slots to be swappable?
- Any specific armor I should use? I don't like running around naked :p
- Is it better to have a weapon upgraded to lightning +5 or to have it at +15 and use gold pine resin ?

thanks!

I also have a SL1 pyro and pyromancy is incredibly powerful when you've levelled your flame all the way, but it requires a lot of souls (somewhere in excess of 300k).

I think the ring of favor and protection is very worthwhile, and never really felt I needed two extra slots. It's essentially the only way to increase your stats since you aren't levelling up.

Go with the best defense for the type of mobility you want. The pyro cloak thing is really good for a light choice, along with chain leggings or black leather pants.

Probably better to upgrade it since gold pine resin is a finite resource, unlike charcoal and poison resin.

Is the pvp arena in darksouls active anymore

No, people just PvP in the area right next to the Arena, the Oolacile Township bonfire. Undead Burg and Moonlight Butterfly forest is another hotspot for PvP because that first Taurus Demon boss is optional.

Arena works, but the activity is so low that you can only get something going if you arrange it with other players.

Yes, you have to kill Knight Lautrec in Anor Londo right before you fight Smough and Ornstein. You should have an item in your inventory that will vibrate when you are in the right area. Other than that you can go to Quelaag's sister or the knight in Anor Londo's first bonfire.

I just beat the game......what a game. Can't believe I passed over this, I kind of want to go back and play Demon's Souls now lol.

Lautrec's behind this? I knew I shouldn't have released that giggling basterd, sigh.

I guess i'm still a long way from going to Anor Lando, only rang the first bell. Any idea where that sister might be?

I think I screwed some things up. Upgraded my Longbow to a Fire Longbow, but it's not doing any fire damage as far as I know. In retrospect, it doesn't sound logical either. The arrows do most of the damage...
Can't find any Large Titanite Shards for my shortsword, and upgraded my Greatsword to Raw, but now i'm noticing it scales less with my stats. Also haven't put enough points into dexterety, been pumping points mostly into Strenght and Endurance.

Ah well. You learn from your mistakes, even if it might be a little too late. Leveling goes a lot slower at Lvl 41. :p

Also, congratulations dude. :)

The bow and your stat scaling with it does the damage as well as arrows, elemental removes scaling so you have to take that into account as well as the elemental (in this case fire) resistance of enemies you use it on. As I can remember arrows don't show the effect of the bow only the arrows themselves, so a fire bow won't set ablaze an enemy like fire arrows will. But the damage is still taken even without the visible effect.

Raw is poor choice yes, but on both these things you can revert the weapons back to regular at a blacksmith if you want, or farm/buy another.

Large Titanite - you can buy it at the
merchant in Sen's or the Giant blacksmith in Anor Londo
(not sure how far you are in the game). You can also farm it from the slugs/leeches in Blighttown swamp or the blob slug things in the Depths. Both drop large titanite and green titanite (which will upgrade your fire bow). The ones in Blighttown drop 5 green at a time, which is useful as feed them to Frampt and he breaks them into 5 regular titanite shards each which means one drop = 25 titanite shards. Nice.

Don't worry, you haven't screwed anything up. Shortsword on a strength build though? I like the look of the short sword but from memory I don't think there are any benefits over the Longsword other than one point less weight. If you want more souls for levelling up - co-op is the key. You get a ton of souls and 1 humanity for every boss killed in the hosts world and it usually amounts to a few minutes work.

Right, thanks. I didn't think my firebow did anything due to not seeing any fire. Most enemies I come across are undead so it's quite is handy for now, but I think i'm going to buy and level a normal one for later use.

I'm currently exploring the depths and trying to take on
the Gaping Dragon.
Only rang the bell at the Gargoyles. Barely explored Blighttown. Going there next when/if the boss at the Depths starts to feel impossible. That tip sounds really usefull, so thanks for that!
Those blobs are really easy, so i'll take some more humanity and defeat some of those. See if they drop anything so I can level my Longsword. Don't know why I wrote Shortsword, sorry about that. Must be that gigantic inventory that's making my mind a little foggy. :)

EDIT: I normally don't really like bossfights, but Great Scott this game has some good one's. Just defeated the
gaping dragon
and man, what a rush! What an awesome fight. I felt like I could take on anything after that.
Untill I went into Blighttown, fell into nothingness and lost 1K souls, that is.

Normally, Lautrec kills the Firekeeper after you visited Blighttown and picked up the firekeeper soul there, which means you'd have rang the second bell by the time you returned to Firelink shrine. But, it appears you're using the master key or the Valley of Drakes shortcut to reach Blighttown and slightly explore it before beating the Depths, so you're getting screwed out of the Firelink bonfire rather early, haha. :p

Whatever you do, DO NOT offer the Firelink keeper soul to upgrade your Estus flask, or you will lose Anastacia until NG+.

There are at least two triggers that I know for sure that cause
Lautrec to kill the Firekeeper:

1. Grabbing the Firekeeper Soul in Blighttown shortcut (might also need grabbing the one in New Londo)
2. Killing Kellogg and ringing the bell.

I don't think that just going to Blighttown, regardless of shortcut or not, causes him to kill the Firekeeper.

I did explore the Valley Of Drakes a bit with the use of the masterkey and found a Firekeeper Soul, so that's what triggered it.

Wasn't using more then five flask often anyhow, (notyet-notyet-notyet/dead) but it still sucks. :p

And thanks for the tip! Will keep it in mind.

How hard is it to get summoned at SL90+ on NG+? I didn't do any summons my first playthrough but I want to join Sunbros for the Miracles so I can get the achievement (and my Faith is only 10). Playing on PC.

As hard as getting summoned on SL90 on NG. Co-op/Invasions don't look at what + you're on, only your SL. You'll probably have the best luck getting summoned on the latter bosses and the DLC. Putting your sign down before the Colisseum in the DLC has a good chance, since it can get you to two bosses.

Ouch. This means I'm probably going to have to farm souls to pump Faith then?
