This thread somehow managed to fly below my radar but I finally saw it thanks to recent posts. A lot of my most-awaited games are not being included on my final list because they do not have a definite 2014 release date. I'll list them below my top 10 just to be sure they get mentioned (and they deserve to be).
Anyway, here's my list:
1. Persona 5 : I loved Persona 3 and loved Persona 4: Golden a lot more, so there's no way I'll ever miss out on this. The Persona games have taken over Final Fantasy for my JRPG fix ever since FF XIII came out and proved to be a colossal disaster (personally speaking, that is). I wasn't sure if I would list this on my official top ten though because it's not announced for a western release this year, but I did anyway since it'll be out by Fall 2014 in Japan (and the fact that I just cannot resist doing so). LOL
2. The Order: 1886 : There hasn't been any gameplay shown yet but that doesn't stop me from getting hyped for this game. I loved the setting (steampunk FTW) and the story looks like it'll be interesting. I really hope it lives up to the expectations.
3. inFamous: Second Son : inFamous has been one of my favorite new IPs from the previous console generation so I'm really excited on its transition to the new generation and see how it improves the formula. I hope it becomes more successful than it currently is though. I kinda feel that the series is being overlooked by a lot of people. But then again, I could be mistaken.
4. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt : This is the series I was really hoping to play on consoles and, thankfully, CDProjekt Red is making that a reality. Nothing against the PC versions of course but I just prefer to play my games on consoles. I cannot wait to finally play this game.
5. The Division : There are rumors that this game has been delayed to 2015 but until that is confirmed, this is making my list. I've been impressed from the first time it was shown in E3 and I'm more excited about it now. Granted that my excitement about it is more from a technological standpoint, the gameplay looked fantastic. I hope that it really delivers once it comes out. Looks like it's going to be a winner for Ubisoft if it does. I just hope it doesn't fall prey to their annualization thing.
6. Watch_Dogs : I was going to list this as my #5 but somehow I'm not as excited about this right now as I am for The Division. But that said, I'm still definitely checking it out. The delay may have factored quite a bit on my lessened interest, but I'm all for it if it means the game will be better and deliver on its promise.
7. Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster : Final Fantasy X was the last FF game that I absolutely loved. I did like FF X-2 despite its more light-hearted plot and presentation but I just can't quite reconcile the drastic difference between the Yuna in X and the one in X-2. Still though, it was a fantastic game and its battle system is a lot better over the one in FF XIII. Oh, I also liked FF XII but the cast was not as memorable to me with the exception of Balthier. That guy really stole the show from Vaan (his character design did him no favor either).
8. Kingdom Hearts II.5 HD Remix : The fact that I'm more excited for the HD remakes from Square-Enix says a lot about how much the disconnect between them and me (and maybe a few other gamers, too). From a studio who turns to gold anything that they touch, everything they announce now is met with a ton of skepticism. But then again, can their fans be blamed? Anyway, I digress. Kingdom Hearts is easily among my fave JRPGs ever and I sometimes prefer it over Final Fantasy itself. Sure, the plot has gone so convoluted at this point, but I still enjoy the crossover between Final Fantasy and Disney characters. The gameplay is great and the music is just phenomenal. Shimomura Yoko's score is always a joy to listen to and Utada Hikaru's original songs for the main games are just as iconic. As for this HD release, I'm already sold with it having Kingdom Hearts II but the fact that Birth By Sleep is there (which I found amazing) makes it a lot more irresistible to me.
9. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes : If this was announced a few years ago, it would easily make the top of my list. After all, MGS 3: Snake Eater is among my favorite games of all time. But I'm not so sure about the direction it's taking. Not sure if it's the fact that David Hayter is no longer providing the voice of Snake, but here's something about it that I can't quite put my finger on. Hopefully this proves me wrong once it comes out.
10. Dragon Age: Inquisition : It's easy to see with my list that I love RPGs. Mostly JRPGs, sure, but I'm also interested on a few western ones. Having said that, I'm not sure why I missed out on the first two Dragon Age games but I'd like to play the upcoming one in the series. Maybe that explains why it's sitting at the bottom of my top 10. But hey, it's there and is, in fact, on top of a few other games I'm also interested on. I do hope that it becomes more of an RPG this time as I have a lot of friends who told me that the second installment was hardly one in their eyes.
Now here are a few games coming out in 2014 that I'm also keeping my eyes on. The ones on my list above are just a bit more exciting to me at this point in time.
Tales of Xillia 2 : Tales of Xillia was the first Tales game that I ever played and I enjoyed it. I look forward to playing the sequel and hope that it solidifies my interest on the series. Heck, I'm even keeping tabs on Tales of Zestiria now.
Child of Light : Well, I enjoy my classic RPGs and this one means to pay homage to them. So yep, it's getting an honorable mention here.
Destiny : Okay, I never play FPS games (which is a shame, I know) due to motion sickness but that doesn't mean I cannot be interested on them. It's a new Bungie game and it'll be interesting to see how they follow an incredibly popular franchise like Halo. I'm wishing them the best of luck (no sarcasm intended at all).
Deep Down : I'm not a big fan of MMOs and I'm mostly leery of free-to-play games, but I'd like to see what Capcom will do on this. I'm definitely never including this on my Top 10 list but it deserves a mention since it's still registering a bit of a blip on my radar.
DriveClub : What is this game's official name? Is it #DRIVECLUB? Drive Club? The OC in me is driving me nuts. LOL But that said, I've seen bits of gameplay footages of this game and I thought they were impressive. I think delaying the game was a good decision on Sony or Evolution Studio's part. I don't play a lot of driving games because I'm not really a big car guy, but this is still interesting. Somehow I was hoping that this would be more arcade-y to contrast Sony's other major racing/driving IP, Gran Turismo, which is all about simulation. I don't drive (at least not yet) so I'm more about just pure racing at this point.
Last but not the least here are some games that do not have a 2014 release date announced but are definitely on my watchlist:
Uncharted 4 : I love Naughty Dog and one of their teams just came out with my personal Game of the Generation (The Last of Us). I loved the Uncharted games (even Uncharted 3, so sue me) so I'm absolutely keeping an eye for the next game in the series. If this is is coming out this year, it'll sure be in my Top 3.
Lily Bergamo : Little is known of this game but I loved that trailer and cannot wait to see more. I hope Suda51 finds more success on this game.
Final Fantasy XV : And finally there's FF XV. The XIII saga has caused nearly irreparable damage to the brand in my books but I have to admit that I was more looking forward to this game than FF XIII itself. Not sure if Square-Enix would ever be able to redeem the franchise to its former glory with this game but I hope it will help make it more likable and relevant again. Or maybe they should just fire Wada and whoever's running the show in their offices.
