Sony won't offer option to disable PS4 DualShock 4 light bar

I sit about 8ft away from a 52" that's roughly eye level and have never noticed the light reflection. I guess under other circumstances it could be annoying though.

How many news stories have been written because Yoshida says "no" to someone in twitter? Ha. Shows how much he's willing to answer from questions from fans, he's a good dude for that.

2006 Sony is back!
The arrogance is creeping back in.
arrogance already resurfacing 2 months in...
Seems like Sony pre-launch and Sony post-launch are very different prospects, a little concerning really.
Don't do this Sony. This reeks of post PS2 arrogance.
Because their launch success has already gone to their head. Didn't take long for PS2-era mentality to creep back in.

This seems like a silly thing to take such a firm stance on. Just give us the option. We somehow survived without giant controller lights for decades.

Worst thing is the light only really works if you've got the PS camera. I don't so what is the benefit of my controller having a bright blue light on it? I guess to tell it apart from my other PS4 controller that I don't have. Maybe so I can look at it when playing Killzone so I know when I'm dead?

I read the first page and scanned the last, so please pardon me if someone has already detailed this.

HOW TO TURN OFF CONTROLLER WHILE WATCHING NETFLIX

Once your video is playing do the following:

1. Hold the PS button until the normal screen appears.
2. Continue holding the PS button for the remainder of this procedure
3. Press Circle, X
4. You should be back to your video playing, continue holding PS button for a few seconds and it will turn off and the video will keep playing. You can now let go of the PS button.

Sad you have to do all this, but someone on GAF mentioned this and I've been grateful.

Straight up stoopid that light can't be turned off..the face the wife gives me when it wakes her = RUN!
Geezuz..did I miss the talking points memo? Arrogance EVERYWHERE!!! lol..

I just want to understand why someone would like the light; I don't get that at all.

Light that can be kind. Light that can smell sweet. Light that can be soft.
Light that can be porcelain. Light that can be silent. Light that can speak.
Light that can hold many colors. Light that can be romantic. Light that can be harsh.
Light that can be cold. Light that can be warm. Light that can be dry.

While I think if it is possible to turn it off the option should be given I'm puzzled that people watching Netflix on PS4 sit holding the controller pointed at the screen constantly : I mean if the light bothers you why not put the controller down with the light facing away the second you start the film or TV show?

This is really annoying, but for Netflix at least there IS a solution. If you have a smartphone or some such with the Netflix app on it, there is a button in the top EDIT: Right that lets you decide where to play your content. In other words you can browse netflix on your phone and send it to your PS4 to play, it'll also allow you to control the video while its playing, allowing you to turn off the controller.

I hate that damn light bar though.

I hope Sony eventually releases a version of their controller that doesn't have the light nor the touch pad. Neither are necessary and I'd like a controller that lasts longer.

Light is used to:
1. tell if controller on. (ir wont work)
2. tel wich player the controller belongs to. (ir wont work)

they could've just added a tiny indicator like the ds3 for this.
3. give ambient light effects. (ir wont work)

Neither does the lightbar. When holding the DS4, I can only see the light in my tv reflection
4. tracking controller (ir is enough)

They should give option to turn it off.

that sounds like that "assing user to controller feature". Sounds inconvinient. Things are clearly yet to be fully thought out.

Although disappointing news since I was hoping they'd change their mind, they've been saying "no" to this question since the controller was first revealed, has nothing to do with arrogance or shit like that

I think I may actually look into getting some tape to cover that up now.

im honestly not having a single problem with the light bar. tv is mounted on the wall and while watching netflix the controller is usually on the floor or something.

I haven't played with the lights off yet so I'm sure that's why the lights don't bother me. I don't see why they wouldn't offer a way to turn them off though for people that are bothered.

In the winter I play snuggled up with a blanket. Wireless controller under blanket, no issue. In the summer I keep the AC cold enough that I play snuggled up with a blanket....

If it is a REAL issue, I'm sure it's pretty easy to physically disable the LED after opening up the controller.

RoboPlato, the universal consensus of the world.

2 of my 4 controllers are fucked. 2 of the 2 controllers owned by my friend are fucked. Dozens and dozens of gaffers here have posted that its fucked.

I honestly haven't been following the issue much so I wasn't writing it off completely. I didn't know that many people were having the issue, I've only seen a few on GAF mention it. Both of mine and the other six between my friends are all used a lot and haven't had issues. I was just saying that there are controllers out there that are doing alright.

Hopefully they wise up and release a Dualshock 4 2.0 without that useless light and touchpad.
Touchpad is actually pretty awesome when used well. It felt very natural and quick to switch between OWL abilities in Shadow Fall with it.

I get that this is a non-issue to a lot of people but what's up with the dismissive attitude towards those who are bothered by the light? Is it really that wrong to want the option to turn something off that you're not using? Because it doesn't bother you it shouldn't bother anyone?

I really don't understand why so many people interact with others like this :/

Why I am not surprised to see you're that guy from the "sony won't buy third party exclusives, and is not delivering on first party games" thread?

Yeah. He did that with the background issue, too. Not enough that they are denying these simple things that they don't even give a fucking explanation as to the reason, but Yoshida is being an absolute dick about it with just one word, and of course, NO one from the gaming media seems willing to call people out because of "oh God, what if they blacklist us"?

1. This needs calling out (both Sony never giving us any reasons as to why this has to be...not that the lightbar is an issue with me, though the background thing is since I'm getting tired of the BG HAVING to be blue all the damn time; it's that they deny the option for no damn good reason, and the calling out of Yoshida for his dickish attitude lately).
2. If you're so scared about being blacklisted, then I don't think you're doing your job as a game journalist. This never happens in any other medium that gets covered by press in the business world. Why are game companies so damn scared to answer hard questions with actual answers?

I wish people would stop complaining about others who complain about the lightbar. It doesn't bother you, cool. It does bother some (plenty) and Sony should listen.

It doesn't really bother me either, like at all, but I still think it's bullshit to not allow people the option to turn it off because I can see how they may have a problem with it. It also seems like such a simple request to comply with that Sony look like dicks for always just dismissing it with a "No".

I take it back about it not bothering me. If they allowed it to turn off the battery life would jump.

That's a shame.

Thankfully I've modded my 3 controllers and about 10 for family and friends so the light is disabled. If I ever buy the camera I'll install physical switches.

Takes about 5 minutes to open the controller and use tape to mask off half of the ribbon cable feeding the led matrix, you leave the other half of the cable live to allow for USB charging. I imagine if you have the charging cradle you can just unplug the ribbon altogether.

Regarding battery life, it is massively better, all day gaming sessions become a reality where they are impossible with the light on. With light the controllers would get charged 2-3 times daily for heavy use, with the light disabled that becomes charged every 2-3 days.

One caveat to having no light, it does make it less obvious your battery is low, and with it lasting so long a dead battery sneaks up on you. I can see myself modding a tiny low power led in to the controller at some point.

Why is it, whenever someone has an issue with something that can be fixed to allow both parties to enjoy things as they wish. Some douche has to come out of the woodwork and attack people who don't agree with them. And then hypocritically moan about them moaning. If you want the light, no one is asking for you to lose that ability.

"Its just a light" - Exactly, so what is the big deal about turning it off ffs. Why are people like Bundy so personally offended by it they make a fly by post without zero contribution. Do you lose out if people get their wish to be able to turn the light off? I am having to guess at the motivation since it isn't being explained. Some want a better battery life and no glare from their TV screens, with a company that listens to its customers.

Also, most aren't talking about the light specifically. It is the attitude Shu/Sony displays with such a blanket no. This is following their previous blanket no's that they put on their FAQ's and such, things like DLNA which did happen to bother more people and so they changed their stance. Weird that. As I am sure if everyone who was bothered enough by the light option could bug him and Sony about it everyday and eventually they would relent. Again, what do they lose out by doing it? Its up to the user and any game that wants to use that dumb feature. Btw, I got the camera and use the light happily in that context. This option is low down on my 'want' list, but it is still there and having a 'no' without any reasoning is pathetic communication on any companies part. Hell, I don't talk to my 3 year old that way.

I just unplugged it internally when I needed to tear it open and clean it from a buddy dropping soda on it.

Of course some trickery required for that USB portion.

Turning off the LED really won't extend the operating time by anything significant. But I can understand people that want it off because they don't like the light or the reflection on the TV.

Disappointing. It's really bright too when watching Netflix/Prime with the lights off.

Turn the controller off?

You don't have a PS4 do you? When turning the controller off in Netflix the video pauses.

if you turn the controller off while watching Netflix it pauses the video

Really?

That's a bit of an oversight.

Well, you can do this (I do it)... program your controller to "turn off" after "X" minutes without using it... then, the controller turn off automatically without affecting Netflix.

I use "10" minutes and works cool. Then, when the serie/movie is over, you turn on the DS4 again.

I suspect that the reason the DS4 has poor battery life is because Sony used a cheap battery, not the lights.

They should still give the option to turn them off though.

I'm with you completely here on the bolded. The extra sauce some are stirring up..that shit should be laughed at and mocked.

Yoshida addressed fans via Twitter after the exec was quizzed on the likelihood of a "future update" that may offer the ability to turn off the illuminated panel on the upper surface of the controller for games that make no use of it.

"No," replied Yoshida, in response to the question.
For the Players.

This is probably the most glaring and stupid oversight i've encountered. Not sure what's more preposterous - that they never thought of having an option to turn the light off in the first place or their apparent reluctance to offer it now.

I just want to understand why someone would like the light; I don't get that at all.
I think it's a cool little effect. I've never had a controller with a light on it that could change colors. I think it's neat in Killzone when it changes color to reflect your health, and I wish more games used it.

Nope your right 10 hours idle with led vs 28 hours idle without is small XD

I wonder if the reason Sony can't let us control it is because they have already told developers that it is available for them to control and use or not use as they see fit.

I don't know Shu, but it's pretty damn hard to judge someone's attitude from reading the word "no" written in twitter. Do you expect him to write down their reasoning for doing everything people may ask about on twitter? That seems like it's a lot to ask for someone who's job ostensibly doesn't revolve around answering twitter queries.

The fact that he's even made himself available to give us the information he has is the opposite of "pathetic communication" in my opinion.
