NPD Sales Results for December 2013 [Up2: Xbox One/360 HW, 3DS top system of year]

If Sony wasn't selling in over 53 countries and just limited themselves to the amount MS has how do you think those numbers would be looking at the moment? And we'll see how well MS does next month without the crutch of the holiday rush.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
And did I say it is good news? I said "breathes".

As long as something sells 10k or whatever, you can point to that as breathing and no reason to panic. If the Doctor comes in and says "It appears your console has contracted Dreamcast disease", everyones gonna gasp aloud and start crying.

Also I hope the PS4 numbers come out at like 7:45

THAT way everyone is distracted from the UPlay giveaway!

...until I brought it up, SHIT :p

I agree. This is December numbers and MS is responding to December numbers, but there are so many here flying the flag of the other console talking Liftetime sales. MS got a lot of crap for the PR statements last time, so this time, they are speaking about December and get crap for it as well.

I mean, the number of people that said the PS4 would outsell the Xbox One in December seem really bitter ight now. Why can't everyone just accept that the PS4 was outsold for the month and only for the one month? It is too much to accept for some of you?

I have both consoles, I like both consoles and I am glad they are selling a ton of hardware and this can only be good for our hobby overall. The hatred some of you have makes it feel like you have a vested, personal interest in who outsells who. It is just gaming guys/gals. When 2 of the top companies are selling like they are selling, you need to know that is a GOOD thing for the industry.

I wouldn't call it hate. With all the things MS has tried to pull this year, I'm not surprised people question their every statement. A lot of what they say doesn't add up as well.

It's a fact that the X1 sold well in Dec., but it's also a fact that the PS4 still leads overall in NA, Xbox's biggest region where the 360 sold 2 to 1 compared to PS3. And that's with very little supply. It also seems that there's plenty of X1s on shelves, so it really should have been able to do better.

I fully expected the X1 to outsell the PS4 in Dec. And I think it'll do so again in Jan. Once the PS4 is in stable stock though, they're not going to be winning much of anything. When the more mainstream audience starts jumping in, we'll see the real effect of the $100 price difference. WW it's already no contest, the Ps4 will dominate.

I want Dreamcast disease!

On a slightly related note, Nintendo's The Pitch contest found no winners.

So was Microsoft somewhat justified in not launching in so many territories at once, and keeping a large amount of stock for the major Tier 1 countries instead?

Sony is still in the lead worldwide, but it's not good for your competitor to be in stock, while you are sold out for large periods of time during the month no? Pretty impressive for Microsoft nonetheless. After the beating they took online for their policies, the higher pricepoint, it is still selling so well.

Will be interesting to see by the time TitanFall releases, what the numbers are like worldwide.

Should be clear the XB1 is going to do very well in the US. I still believe it'll outsell the PS4 over the next few years in the US, whereas the PS4 will certainly outsell it everywhere else (Europe, Japan, etc)

How Ghosts managed to get top spot is beyond me.

People with franchise loyalty have to get burned on a game before they stop buying the next one.

I bought Ghosts, regretfully, but I won't be purchasing this year's version. I didn't like MW3, either, so Sledgehammer making this year's doesn't inspire confidence, anyway.

Which one? There's so much spinning in this thread it's making me dizzy.

It's strange people don't believe MS managed to sell 800k in 11 countries in two months. People need to give it up both console brands transitioned well both are healthy. Sony is still winning just as they were in the last gen worldwide.

I think it would be the same. Have to remember part of the issue is stock with PS4.

Not the case with Xbox One.

Sony is ahead in total LTD for NA, coming out of a gen where MS had pretty much double the install base on the 360, with constrained supply.

XBone had December, will be interesting to see where it goes from here, especially if that represents peak demand and units available everywhere.

Mort said the number was closer to 2.8 million than 3 million, but in the end it doesn't really matter that much. We are only talking about a 200K difference. For me the biggest guide will be the next fiscal year forecasts from both Sony and MS.
Yeah it doesn't matter that much. I just like to talk about numbers =). Q1 is going to tell us much more.

Dreamcast's family didn't have money for healthcare. That's the sad part in that story.

get some go again
wonder if sony will divert more consoles to the u.s now that microsoft won december. i know they are leading worldwide but they can't allow the competitor to catch up in the most important market.

Sony needs to divert supply to the US before demand wanes. Strike that iron while it's hot.
It's not like there's no demand in other countries though. US is not the only market.

I work at an electronics retailer in Switzerland, PS4s don't last long here. Today, we got a new shipment of 50 consoles, we put out no notice at all that we would have them as not to get overrun. They sold out in a couple of hours regardless.

Do you guys think Sony will be able to provide more units in Jan then Dec?

Or will it be foolish to pack more units into NA due to the risk of demand maybe halting near the end of this month.... And instead they should spread out their stock equally in EU as much as NA

Disappointing for 3DS. Down YoY for the month (should be up YoY overall though right?) but I suppose there was more competition this year than last. Still, all the aggressive measures...I mean last year had Paper Mario only :\

X1 and PS4 I think we don't have much of a picture yet. One is supply constrained and the other, well let's see how it holds up in January. I expect both to do well though; they just have to pick up the slack for the rest of the disappointing systems (3DS, Vita, WiiU...).

SIAP.

@jimreilly: NPD: "Xbox One led consoles sales in Dec, while PS4’s two-month total makes it the best selling console during the two-month launch window."

One of these two machines is $100 more expensive, which makes the way the Xbox One is performing insanely impressive no matter how one chooses to view this. One can only imagine how the landscape would look if it were the same price as the PS4. Maybe there'd be no difference at all, but the Xbox One's price is without a doubt a factor. It's the primary reason that I myself still don't own one of my own.

Why are people cheerleading for corporations.

Maybe they like the products? :)

A little surprised with the Xbone lead that month.

Unfortunate for Sony PR but thats about it. Thought they would have moved heaven and earth to get 1m in the US in December.

Will be fun to see what happens in Jan now that the supply is kind of there but the Christmas rush isnt. For both systems.
I fully expect Xbox One to win in January as well. Stock problems have been reported to this very day and with the Japan launch in February....its not looking good for Sony. The only think that can have Sony win these next few months is if Xbox One demand fall off a cliff.

Guess I did? Maybe I should've said "not one reasonable person".

You should have seen the Xbox one 3 million thread. People were posting pictures of stores with lots of Xbox ones in stock, and so many people were using that as proof for Microsoft lying. It was so ridiculous. I tried reasoning with them but they wouldn't listen.

Isn't Treyarch's CoD this year?

I predicted 800k for wiiU. I think I failed in that. I predicted 1m for ps4 and 1.2m for xbo. If we keep my ratios. 900k xbo 750k ps4 560k wiiU. Have to go to bed. Lame npd.
Edit. Have to say I am glad Sony did not put all of its supply to us, even if it meant losing december ndp. And I expected over 1 million because one "insider" poster here said he was impressed with ps4 number, but these numbers are not impressive.
