STEAM Announcements & Updates 2014 - To Next-Gen and Beyond!

GAF, you should turn off Steam updates. There's some glitch with Steam right now that pushes several GBs of "updates", but it just renames some games (eg L4D2 becomes TF2).

Are there any VN with a heavy focus on dialogue choices?

Knurek would probably know some VNs that feature that. Though i'm pretty sure none on steam out of the few there are like that. If you want a free one to try Katawa Shoujo has a decent amount of choices.

Well, we like Polish games too, I just thought it goes without saying. ;)

I need Hate games to get on this train, as I'm not entirely sure I'll like them, but still wanna try.

Talking about VNs, where is steam Steins Gate? that I want most of all of them, VNs.

I played the first game and actually did enjoy it. Not as much as her other two free titles though. The game is basically reading documents to piece the story together and talking to the AI to see how things fall in. It's not badly executed but I went in expecting something else which sort of ruined it for me. Wanting to grab the 2nd one as soon as it hits 50% off.

Who knows where the hell stein gates is.
Shit Ever17 popped up in the SteamDB and it's MIA.

Long live the Queen!
it heavily focuses on pretty much everything, choices too. It's just heavily focused game (><)
usually, in every VN there are choices, I'm not sure what you mean by heavily, probably that there is a lot of branching?
Not many VNs on steam, and I haven't played Hate games yet, zkylon knows everything about those.
And I'm not sure Magical Diary can be counted as VN, it probably can, not so many dialogue choices so far in it.

I didn't say LLTQ since I figured it wasn't what he was asking for.
Though it does have a demo so he could try it out as well.

Jast will 'look into getting into Steam' after they release the game the old way. I wouldn't hold your horses.

I really hope they will realise what's good for them, releasing it on steam with achievements, cards and in all glory. They need to do some advertising on steam, but not much, it's well known enough.

I've played katawa shoujo for a bit but I didn't really like it that much, not sure if I could choose other routes but the scenario involving Shiina and Shizune was kind of boring :<

Yea similar to LLtQ with a lot of branching and more choices, but I've already played LLtQ :p

I really don't think it is just for UK people. Some relevant portions from the initial post announcing the beta:

I haven't seen anything else about regional restrictions in any of the posts they've made. Also, I have over four bucks in GMG credit thanks to the Playfire Rewards stuff, and I'm in Canada.

Yup, all the values are in GBP for now; we convert on a daily exchange rate once it hits your GMG account. This is a temporary measure for the BETA. We'll introduce proper support for currencies at a later date. If GMG supports your country then the Playfire BETA will work for you.

I've the same issue, but I think my problem is due to my playfire account being set to a different email address than my GMG account.

(I'm from the UK for reference, so it isn't a country issue for me at least)

Some people have two accounts. If you haven't got a Playfire account you literally just log in with your GMG details, no need to register. If you've got two separate accounts then we can't merge/link your accounts, but we are working on a solution for that, but it's gonna take time. If you want you in the meantime you can just as CS to unlink your Steam account, sign in with your GMG account and link your Steam information to that one. The only disadvantage is your balance won't transfer.

If the rate of them getting greenlighted keeps up, i'm going to become JaseC and make sure I own every VN that makes it's way to steam.

We all would buy another game similar to LltQ, but I don't think there are any :(

great!
I've read some really mean comments on VN games in greenlight. It seems there is part of steam users that thinks these games give cancer or something (><)

I actually haven't played to many VNs so I can't think of much else to recommend.
But I see you were liking LLTQ which sadly as Arthea said there isn't anything much like that.

I forgot to mention Cherry Tree High Comedy Club. I've played too little to tell, but it doesn't seem to be choices focused.
Anybody finished it?

It is? I thought idea is insane enough to go both ways, being horrible or awesome. I'm kinda interested in it.
So, what's good about it?

It's a very sound football simulation (with some obvious concessions to make it work as a card game), with some great risk/reward depending on how you play your cards. It's also incredibly simple to pick up (even more so if you understand football and solitaire), but very challenging on the harder AI.

Thanks, seems like my type of the game more and more. :)
I'll add it to my wishlist for now and buy it at some point.

Not really, can't think of any off hand.
You mean stuff like The Walking Dead, right? I think you're better off with western Adventure/RPG games if you want that - Alpha Protocol for instance.

Dusk Golem

I can also confirm from the Kickstarter update just now that Paper Sorcerer is releasing on Steam today at 10 AM PST.

Kickstarted both Dead State and Paper Sorcerer, so happy of course.

Yeah, basically.

I've played kana little sister a long time ago and I remember there were some simple choices that leads to different endings, etc, it wasn't as indepth as TWD but yeah it's basically what I was looking for, stuff like heavy rain, the walking dead, but without all the QTEs and high budget VA/cutscenes, just dialogues/choose your own adventure.

If you're okay with simple choices, just about every VN will do (except for stuff like Higurashi/Umineko, which don't have choices at all).

Just try the suggestions in GAF VN Thread

I'd personally recommend Steins;Gate, 999 and Phoenix Wright games for starters.

Dusk Golem said it's basically the Social Links of Persona as a game.

That's kinda good description :)

Cherry Tree Comedy High is kind of choice-focused, but not in the typical sense. Basically you want to start a comedy club, and find members for the club. You have two months to do this, and there are six possible candidates. However, the game is more challenging than it sounds (though not too long), and it can be hard to recruit even 2-3 people in those two months. To succeed, you need to work on gaining knowledge in various fields, like music, literature, romance, art, history, and when you've gained more 'knowledge' in these fields, you are far more interesting to talk to others about these topics. In a strange design decision though, you can only talk to a character once about a specific topic. Like, not per day, in one playthrough, so you can only for example talk to Sara about Romance once, and you sort of want to be strategic in when you talk to them about certain topics, involving your two comfort level, how high your knowledge level is on that certain topic, etc. You can sort of figure out what each person individually likes and dislikes just by casual talking with them, though.

Basically its a strategy game where you have to hone your skills and try to win people over to join your club by calculating conversations and leveling up your knowledge chains, and triggering special events with people to make them like you more, or get them to open up to you, so you may then get them to agree to join your comedy club. And you sort of need to focus on certain people you want rather than everyone as there isn't enough time really to go for everyone.

I also want to throw out there that, while utterly ridiculous, Hatoful Boyfriend is surprising fun and choice really does make a difference. There's also more than a few surprises in store... And yes, beyond the fact all of the boys are pigeons.

Thanks for writing this. It seems to be not so simple as I thought it is, I might even get to finishing it now!
If I understand you correctly, you have only one chance to get any of possible candidates to join the club?
In this case, it makes sense for it to be short, as you probably need several tries to get your club nice and running, no?

Their Early Access Game section is exactly what every game should have.

Here's a question, you know that progress bar that used to appear for multi teir unlock bonuses, why do the early access games not have a similar thing on their pages so you know at a glance how complete their game is? seems like such an obvious, consumer friendly inclusion especially since it's so difficult to gauge from most of the vague paragraphs in the blue box.

This reminds me, I have unfinished Magical Diary, which sees to be a long game and Cherry Tree High Comedy Club, which seems to be short one. And I yet to start learning to Manage Chaos! (awesome name, btw) Which one of those three is the most interesting? Don't expect another lltQ, just an interesting story would do, less slice of life, more unexpected or mysterious, Magical Diary sort of fits the bill, no? What about Chaos?

Noted... unfortunately.

EDIT:
-1 points to LOVE
-1 points to SENSUALITY
-3 points to FAMILIARITY
+5 points to ANIMOSITY

You have been stabbed. Would you like to try again? Y / N
This seems to be wrong, just pointing out ;)
