Tomb Raider Definitive Edition - PlayStation 4 = ~60fps, Xbox One = ~30fps

Not to derail but I disagree with this.

Perhaps on paper, but at launch no one seemed to be able to get it right for PS4 vs xbox spec comparisons. The press was very misleading, or intentionally vague. Resolution-Gate was a very real thing, and it mislead several people that I know personally.

No way man. Maybe if your just the general public could you make this claim but before launch there was news item after news item on the differences in 3rd party games. I got a XBone for DR3 and Halo not 3rd party. Anyone that is getting the system thinking it's going to be comparable to the PS4 was just being obtuse

Well, in some cases you can blame/applaud MS PR for making it seem like there was more to the story. I and you and many others didn't buy the BS but it could have been just enough to convince those that wanted to be convinced. Also, reviewers/journalists did a nice job of minimizing the differences between the two (Gamestop chart being an egregious example, but polygon also giving XB1 a higher rating).
Yeah, that was a poorly worded, over-generalized post I made. It's true that many were mislead by the disingenuous (or straight up ignorant) press to think the differences were truly minimal.

It's why we need better games journalists that aren't beholden to corporate interests. People shouldn't have to rely on something like NeoGAF to get the truth.

As an Xbone fan I personally don't care that much anymore about the 1080p/30FPS deal mainly because I don't see a difference between 30/60 unless they are right next to each other. Is the gap really that big though polygon wise? I mean 1.5 is not that big or am I underestimating it?

I think 30 vs 60 is noticeable, but some people don't. If you only have one, play the system you have and don't stress the other. If you have both, buy it for PS4 unless you really want the achievements or really prefer the other controller.

To be honest, after giving it a little more thought, this is not too surprising. Here's why...

We already saw BF4 performance on both consoles. BF4 was running 1600 x 900 on the PS4 vs 1280 x 720 on Xbone in order to achieve framerate parity. It stands to reason then that with the PS4 running 1920 x 1080 @ 60fps, Xbone would have to run 1600 x 900 in order to achieve framerate parity, but it looks like they decided to keep both at 1920 x 1080, so obviously the framerate becomes the variable, 35 vs 55.

Does anyone think that going with 1600 x 900 for the bone would have been a better choice?

Using the naturally given skill of basic deduction has nothing to do with some stupid console war.

It has everything to do with the console war, for some people. That's the whole point. Some people are willing to put their head in the sand for the sake of brand loyalty. And, of course, it doesn't help when these poor souls are lied to and believe it.

I had to watch that gif like 20 times in a row. It's seamless.

They are probably just really angry and aren't thinking rationally right now.

Xbox One owner btw

Angry at whom though? Who do "they" think is to blame here? Microsoft, for not prioritizing video games the same way Sony seemingly did? Square Enix, for not being able to produce 1080p/60FPS on the Xbox One? Themselves, for buying the console hoping everything would balance out on a hardware level, although the writing was on the wall months before the console came out? I just don't get it.

The PS4 is great, the Xbox One is great. Both have their benefits, both have their shortcomings. You know your preferences, pick one. It's an open market for god's sake.

That's interesting, but unlikely. If you're an Xbox man, then you played enough PGR to know that 30fps kinda sucks for certain games and genres. If you played Ninja Gaiden/Black, you'd know that anything less than 60fps would have been uncivilized. Same with Dead or Alive 4. It's that smoothness that makes everything look more fluid and natural on your screen. Go from playing and panning the screen around in Ninja Gaiden to playing and panning around in Grand Theft Auto. The difference is jarring and always has been.

You always can see when a game is meaningfully above 30fps. That's why people prefer it if they can get their hands on it.

PGR3 and PGR4 are still the two very best racers from last generation. Unbeaten.

30FPS didn't do jack shit in the end.

Not surprised, we already see the difference with AC4, BF4, CoD Ghosts.

PS4 is simply the more powerful system as we all knew it was going to be.

If you play multi platform games on consoles and want the best looking visual experience, PS4 is the way to go.

30 to ~60 is a pretty massive difference though.

It's a combination of all three to be honest, speaking from experience. I'm even angry!
Angry that I love Halo and need Titanfall after playing the alpha. They've got me by the balls and there is nothing I can do about it. I'm a student and I can't afford both :/

Misterxmedia doesn't disappoint.

http://misterxmedia.livejournal.com/152578.html

Like I said any game /s coming out before or around March will not receive driver updates. Any older engines that are labelled as definitive will defiantly not have had access to underlying hardware. But mark my words straight up is a locked frame rate better then massive slow down when you have thousands of effects rendering.

The new excuse is 'driver support'.

Things I learned from this thread:

  • Objectively, it is what it is and wrapping it in sensational adjectives only displays personal bias.
  • Although extremely difficult, it is best restrain that inner troll lest one desires ban.
  • Junior members coming out of woodwork and getting banned may indicate that people from marketing agencies are still signing up.
  • A Gies' life would finally find meaning working for MS.
  • Be very weary of ElTorro's posts when you are in a place of quietness and/or are eating, drinking.

Now a question:

How many folks who already have played through the game on PS3/360 are planning to double dip despite the full price?

CoD: Ghosts being 720p on One and 1080p on PS4, and Battlefield 4 being 720p/900p respectively said everything that needed to be said. Assassin's Creed IV, as well.

This Tomb Raider news is just further confirmation of what we've already known since launch, and hypothesized before that.

oh absolutely. I just had a few friends who actually read those initial comparisons prior to the corrections or clearing the air. Damage was already done. My buddy was extremely pissed about CoD being 720p.

Tomb Raider will definitely reinforce the point, but some of the early adopters got duped prior to realworld comparisons.

I see, I'm sure your right. I can absolutely not understand it though. I mean I like Nintendo games and their general idea of what video games should be. But I can also see and criticize their shortcomings and act rationally.

At times the PS4 version could be running 60fps best case scenario, while at times the Bone could be running 45fps best case scenario. The average is supposed to be somewhere like 35 vs 55 I believe, basically the same as the difference between BF4 where PS4 is running at 900p vs 720p and they achieve framerate partity. Here however they chose pixel parity at the expense of framerate.

Nobody's saying Tomb Raider Xbox One (or the Xbox One itself for that matter) is garbage or unplayable. But facts are facts. What's so tough to understand here? Using the naturally given skill of basic deduction has nothing to do with some stupid console war.
Well if you read through the entirety of this thread, 30fps has now become unacceptable. Really sometimes I don't think people will be happy until MS closes down the Xbox division and probably refunds everyone who bought an X1.

Waiting for the truth to come out obviously.

Major is too, and he cannot wait. We will get the truth one day, and if Major cannot wait for that day, neither can we.

Major Nelson made that quote on Reddit (4 months ago I might add) in defense of Albert Penello's comment here on GAF about "There is no way we are giving up a 30% + advantage to Sony!" So Major said the truth will come out in the "next few months" so I assume it is taking a bit longer than that.

Albert Penello, by the way, hasn't posted on NeoGaf since Nov. 23 of 2013. However, his last activity on NeoGaf was this morning around 7:38am. So Albert is around, he is just presently lurking.

You know that in BF4 PS4 has also better framerate, right? Sure not 30 fps difference but between 5-12 fps in many scenes.

I was speaking for the general public though. My coworkers.

No. Not Forza 2, not Forza 3, not GT5 nor GT6 could reach the heights of the masterpieces created by Bizarre. And I played them all.

Well that's like, your opinion man. :D

I won't argue your opinion because that's yours, period. Personally, I would have liked to have seen PGR at 60fps. But...we can't always have what we want. Carry on, good sir.

How many folks who already have played through the game on PS3/360 are planning to double dip despite the full price?

If people are being honest...many more GAFers than were going to yesterday. But still not at full price unless they're really thirsty for something new to play. I personally am not that damn thirsty, but I have a full Steam library, a One and a bunch of PS4 games I've barely even started to keep me warm at night.

Others may have worn their games out already and need something to get them to and through February.

I don't see how anyone can claim to feel duped by the X1 because it doesn't run games 100% equal to the PS4 or better. There's nothing on the Box or the advertisements that explicitely claims everything you play on this console will be better than the PS4 version. Until it does anyone feeling duped needs to get over themselves and just enjoy the console for the games or trade it in.

Hahahahaha!!!, yeah... and as a side note... XB1 owners with buyers remorse may still be able to sell it at a decent price and get the system with the superior tech specs instead.

Seriously? This gloating is really uncouth.

But when will the system with the superior tech get all of XO's exclusives that they may want to play?

The same sentiment that PS3 owners had last gen save the "superior tech" portion being replaced by "that is easier to program for" and substituting PS3 for "XO".

Yep. I honestly loved the game. One of my top 10 games of 2013, and the fact that there's not that much to play on my PS4 is making me buy this Day One.

I see. So you fell kinda... helpless maybe? You enjoy the games they offer but at the same time dislike the decision around the games. Xbox being a special case here. In the past being core gamer platform number one (I loved the Xbox 360 so much at the start of the generation) it's getting more and more obvious that the brand Xbox has changed its character, due to personal and strategic changes surrounding it. I feel you. (I'm a student too by the way, let's be poor together.)

Claiming 30 FPS has become unacceptable is pretty irrational as well. Moving forward things have to change however, they have to evolve. Otherwise the medium would just stagnate. Personally, if I had an Xbox One that is, I'd probably be in favour of 720p and 60 FPS. I'm sure lots of Xbox One owners would agree with me.
