Well to be honest I'm more interested in the details that were leaked about the gameplay and horror, not the trailer. The trailer was just a nice little reveal, live action trailer announcement.

All that stuff sounded really vague to me. I find it hard to get excited about PR speak

I guess the part I zeroed in on before watching the trailer was "redefine horror"

then I watched the trailer...

This is why I want a gameplay trailer. Though if they make it disturbing, bring back some good puzzles, some good insanity effects, etc, it will be better then most horror games consoles have delivered in the last few years.... PC is a whole different beast though.

Yeah, on PC, the horror game to beat is Amnesia. That being said, this is clearly taking a different approach, so maybe it's an apples-and-oranges situation.

It should give people "vibes" from alot of American Horror as that's what it looks to be copying.

That's why this trailer does nothing for me. It doesn't portray any unique visual identity. The setting and imagery looks extremely similar to what you'd find in your typical generic horror movie. (Damp, dark prison-like setting. Masochistic imagery with the barbed wire/broken glass creatures etc.) The enemies are like others described very reminiscent of what you see in Silent Hill from the general imagery(PyramiI MEAN safehead) to the rusty, grity textures

It doesn't show what this game is bringing new to horror games at all. It just looks like more of the same tired shit people come to expect from modern horror.

So I'm hoping the "action" is the focus and there's some interesting gameplay to draw me in because I'm already disinterested in horror elements. Something as unremarkable and indistinct as what this trailer shows off has no chance of holding my attention.

I guess I'm just not the type of person this marketing is targeted towards.(I responded a similar way towards Vanquish's live action announcement trailer) Hopefully they show gameplay or something on monday for people like me.

That's right Capcom, just put Silent Hill enemies in a Hostel/Saw setting and put Mikami's name on the box.

That's all it takes apparently

I feel the same way really. Looks like a Saw movie or something.

I don't understand the complaints about the game's visual identity. RE4 wasn't any better in this regard when they first showcased it. Hell, RE4 had the clichéd burlap-clad chainsaw monster. And it's not like remote villages or overcast woods are more exotic in horror films than factories and warehouses.

Squaring off against this monstrosity is likely going to be an intense experience. That thing just looks nasty.

Yea this single image is pretty much all I needed(besides knowing its a game made by the guy who made the greatest game ever, obviously). It just oozes soo much atmosphere, and the creature design is simple but just fucking delivers. After I see a gameplay video and hear whether or not its really survival horror or re4 survival horror, then this will be the 1st game I go on complete blackout mode.

Resident Evil 4 isn't a "pure survival horror" game.

If this is a Resident evil 4 caliber action title I'm all in and don't give a shit about the imagery.

but I mean if it's something with minimal combat/gameplay and focuses more on being a haunted house than a video game, I'm not sure I'm with everyone who's already heralding this as a return to form for the horror genre based on the art alone. because it doesn't look like anything we haven't seen before.

Hmm, OK, I can see where you're coming from, I think.

Me personally, I'm just excited to deal with these monsters in the context of what will hopefully be an immaculately paced journey like RE4. The monsters are memorable so far, the atmosphere is there, and frankly, even if some of this stuff echoes movies, it's always scarier in a game where you have to turn that corner, and you have to go down the stairs into the basement with the flickering light, etc. No covering your eyes when your hands are holding a controller, lol.

Also, just look at that spider-woman screen posted above, with both the monster -and- our hero silhouetted in the dark. You just know that shit's going to be a harrowing and unforgettable experience. :)

It looks amazing. I just wanna see how it animates. You know the main reason spiders are messed up to me (besides some being really gross looking) is because of the way they move. Also not being able to see her clearly sometimes would also be freaky. And then just every now and then when she's breathing down your neck you get a glimpse of her face and you're like "NOPE!" and run like a mofo.

I really hope this is done in a smart way. I don't want it to end up like the recent RE games where at first it's like "OH CRAP HOW DO I HANDLE THIS" to "I've amassed a large collection of ammo and stuff I'll just blast everything before I even see it" =/

That live-action teaser was one of the lamest, most cringeworthy things I've ever seen. Summed up the worst of modern Hollywood horror. Just a bunch of stuff people don't want to look at, but no actual horror. Slick images of extreme, shocking, gross-out stuff is just eyeroll-y. Hopefully it's not indicative of how the game handles horror, but considering how cheap and mediocre Resident Evil and Dino Crisis are in the scare department, I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

Am looking forward to the game itself, though. Should be fun.

Personally, I see it as a personal throwback to the original Biohazard fans. I mean, take a gander with this original Biohazard opening:

See, it's almost exactly as you described with the current trailer just applied to different games.

Cheap, mediocre? I know you got opinions and all but... come on.

For me, in this day and age after all the anticipation of the game unveil, we get a live action trailer. In my books that's to be reviled.

Still the stills give some hope.

IGN will have hands-on impressions and behind-the-scenes video at 10 a.m. EST this Monday, April 22.

The trailer wasn't as scary as it was creepy and disturbing.
To me, the trailer was just EXCITING. Way I see it, you have Sebastian feverishly and obsessively knotting barbwire in a secluded room with his back turned and vulnerable. He's hunkered over, preparing for the monsters closing in on his location, turning the Glass-man's traps against them.

Elsewhere, we see the Glass-man waking up, the Vaulthead coming down the elevator and walking down the hall, and the Reborn Girl emerging from her blood pool and scurrying across the building. Hopefully this is indicative of long stretches of 1v1 or 1v3 where you have to contend with stalker(s) by sneaking past them, outwitting them, and tricking them into their own traps.

Then they can mix it up with more action-oriented sequences where you survive crowds of monsters, RE4-style, as suggested by the concept art that used the War Z screenshot.

-The game promises to have limited resources and be full of puzzles and traps.

This is what gets me hyped the most. Coupled with the atmosphere and monsters. I'm going to make it a goal to never use the internet to beat this game. Going to be good.

I realize this is hilariously premature, but with the fact that this is a Bethesda/Mikami production that will hit current and next-gen, any ideas/hypotheticals on sales potential? I mean, if this becomes a hit, it'd be a great thing for next-gen titles to make a change from the homogenization that's plagued this generation.

But yeah, that's probably wicked premature.

Oh I'd love it if, as if by magic, suddenly good games started selling gangbusters instead of the same old bullshit all the time.

I love Assassin's Creed but I'd much prefer that the 6 million people that run out to buy them every time pick up Watch Dogs instead.

Same goes for all the drones that ran out and blindly bought Resident Evil 6. They better show up to buy The Evil Within next year.

I hope it includes gameplay footage. I really wanna see in-game spider lady in motion.
I'll echo this sentiment. If I recall correctly, IGN promised -at least- a write-up with hands-on impressions tomorrow, as well as a behind-the-scenes video touring Tango Gameworks.

They might as well release a gameplay trailer. It'll take everyone's hype to the next level and really give us something to chew on leading up to E3.

It's a relief that Bethesda isn't the developer, but Tango has a lot to prove. The game's concept looks awesome; its like Resident Evil meets Silent Hill. I'd probably be afraid to play it alone to be honest. It's just a shame this game has a 99.9% chance of not coming out for Wii U, but I can't blame them since Nintendo's given third parties a lot of excuses to not want to support it.

I think its the other way around...

Yeah. I just want to see some of the concept in motion.

6 hours from the IGN happenings. Should we stick to this thread, make a new one?

I also am questioning if I should stay up for it since I'm up doing other things, or just go to sleep when done and wake up to new news.

I wonder if we will see a gameplay preview or a teaser or anything.

I really want to see some kind of gameplay, so hyped.

Must admit, I'm pretty darn excited right now for a game I know very little about. We're getting gameplay footage in 35 minutes, right?

Possibly. All that is set in stone is 'impressions and something else', basically. We are crossing our fingers for gameplay as IGN definitely has played it, and say we'll get a behind the scenes look, but that could mean anything. A talk with the studio, a 'tour' video, gameplay, or whatever.

We'll be hopeful though. It is evident the screens we got probably weren't supposed to go up until today, so there may be more.

Thanks dude. I just want some gameplay footage, that's all. I want to get a feel for the atmosphere, to see how scary it's looking, if there are any fixed-camera angles, that sort of thing.

The lady in the picture is obviously the spiderwoman drenched in blood thing.

i love how even the character is shrouded in darkness in this pic. great use of lighting on this one. instantly shot into my top 3 most wanted games list.
I've always associated that gun pose with Resident Evil for some reason.

VERY Resident Evil 4 like but more survivor horror, which is incredible considering how much of a masterpiece Resident Evil 4 was. This is definitely now my new most hyped game for next year, looks to potentially be game of the year in my opinion.

Every enemy looks like an obstacle in your path, like Resident Evil 4 was, and not a blatant massacre that was Resident Evil 6.
