Loved the way they approached your sense of presence in the game though - even better than Mirrors Edge. The sense of being in the game was superb and the interaction fantastic.

Definitely. Possibly the best thing about the game.

(Baffled at how scary most people are finding this though! I must be too much of a horror veteran.)

It blows my mind how many people are streaming this game on Twitch. Most I have seen streamed yet from the PS4. Even if it's a free on plus.

When you stream it, it gives a sense that you're not alone and someone is there with you while you're playing it (even if no ones actually watching your stream). I bet most people are streaming just for that :p

I streamed it last night in the dark on hard mode first play through with headphones on and I found it rather scary. Even scarier than Amnesia.

I'm streaming on Insane mode right now and If I die than game over

Huh, realized I might be able to stomach playing this game if I do a stream. I kind of accidentally did this with Amnesia on Onlive and got further than I would have otherwise (though the guys watching were a pain about me reading stuff.)

You can beat the game in roughly an hour if you know where to go. I played through the game once on normal and got all the collectibles, so I did all the exploring I wanted to do. After that I watched a speed run on insane to see strategies for certain areas. Enemies are not as crazy as they seem on your first playthrough. The ai is pretty dumb in fact, it kind of ruins the magic of the game when you see just how dumb they are. So I just watched some speedruns, then when I knew a part was coming up I might have trouble with, I would get a video up and synch it with my playthrough. Just play the video and copy it move by move. I Kept dying at chapter 6, it took me about 5 attempts to get passed that part. Then after that I didnt die at all. Once u can get passed chapter 6, I would say you are in the clear for the rest of the game.

When it comes to the night vision, u just have to memorize the paths. For example, I used one battery across chapter 1-4...then almost 2 from 5-8. U can pick batteries up too
Yeah. Agreed on the AI. I accidentally didn't crouch and ran by a guard, and it was all good. After that I realized that u can basically run through everything, if you alert someone just run into a room and hide and then you're good.

Kills a lot of the fun and illusion.

I guess streaming would be okay as long as I don't use any camera or mic. Don't want to accidentally yelp while other people are watching. I still have my pride. :3

No checkpoint or saving on Insanity means you have to play the entire mode in one go? That is crazy.

Ha!

I'm such a chicken. Basically climbed through the window at the start explored one room.

Then quit as I was too chicken....

This game might take a while

It's finally over, I've finished Outlast...

Spent two nights playing in the dark with my ps4 gamepad as my only light source. Too bad it doesn't turn off when your camera drains batteries :)

the guy in the wheel chair grabbed me
I saved it and turned it off straight after. Will go back to it tonight, it's not a game I can play for long sessions.

Nerve shredding.

lol, saves don't save exactly where you were, it'll put you at a checkpoint and you'll have to get past the guy again.

Played for about an hour or so. I'm a huge wimp and only play when someone else is around. Very jumpy without being really scary I'd say. Great game though, awesome PS+ freebie.
the part where you climb out of the cells and the dude is just staring at you. Horrific!

Made an agreement with another GAF member, refused to honor it because he was broke, but then had no problem continuing to buy video games.
I just finished it...

Finally fired it up with headset on. Got to the library, and then quit because I uh...wanted to get my free Battlepack for firing up BF4. Yeah, that's why.

Just finished it...

The Ending

My opinion on this game changed last night. I shredded it earlier in the week in this thread, but I am coming around.

I still think the AI is very dodgy; if you're going to force me to play stealth, let the mechanics make sense and give me some kind of feedback on how close I am to getting caught. The AI is omnipresent like a Call of Duty game from 2008, and it's incredibly annoying.

Anyway, it really isn't as shitty as my first impressions indicated. It's not on the level of something like Amnesia, but it's still better than most of the PS+ dreck we've been shoveled so far. It is a competent, bite sized first person adventure.

I do have a question though, for people who have finished the game. I'm getting close to the end, and
earlier when I was under the hospital, I had to choose "Men's" or "Women's". I went with "Men's", and it doesn't look like I will have the opportunity to explore the Women's wing. How much content did I miss out on? Is it worth it to load up an old save and check it out?

I don't think you have the choice anyway. Plus you do (slight location spoiler)
explore both wards.

There wasn't really a choice you had to go that way and you will "enjoy" the other ward later.

I keep seeing people who say that the enemies can never find you in the lockers. This isn't true at all, I had enemies who definitely did not see me enter the locker pull me out of that fucking thing quite a few times. Nothing like the feeling when they just stop right in front of the locker you're in.

lol I had to stop playing right there

Much to my surprise so far the game doesn't so much frighten me. It does fray my nerves though as in it stressed me out trying to figure out when I can come out of the hiding and move to the next point where I should go. I got to the point where I have to turn on the generators/valve and after turning 1 on, I think my brain just had enough and I decided to stop while my character is safe and sound inside a locker. LOLz.

Hopefully the safe/check point isn't so fucked up that I have to redo the first vale turning all over again. I've been doing good so far in not being detected. I think the mechanic of the game quickly became obvious to me in that as soon as I switch on something, it's a good idea to hide because someone will definitely come after me.

This game gets little things right. Heavy breathing when there are tense moments from the character, the way his hands interact with things... I really appreciate how much effort they put into his movement and actions, it's a big part of the why the scares work.

You do, both of the wards are the buildings in disrepair. The Women's Ward is where you loose the camera for a time.

You can hear the ghost killing the soldiers. So you are not dead I think.

Which doesnt make any sense even with the events of the last minutes of the game.....you kill the guy in the sphere to destroy the Walrider, so basically you need a live host for it to operate, so why does the Walrider still stay alive after you become the host and the soldiers kill you?

I wouldn't play this game with a gun pointed at my head. I can't even watch mildly frightening movies, this could be too much for my heart.

Weird , I'm direct opposite. I get scared by horror movies because I couldn't control whatever happening to the character in it . But with games its less scary because I know I'll be able to come out victorious .

that is a good point, you know when all is said and done, that your character will eventually make it to the end(even if they die a few hundred times in the process). Which is not always the case with movies. Well that is the case in most games. I think this is why zombiU is the scariest, your character, even though a random character(they kinda grow on you) they likely will not make it to the end, you feel really bad after keeping a character alive for 7 hours only to see them get killed and gone forever. And more importantly, there are significant consequences if your character gets killed, like potetially loosing all your precious gear, guns and ammo.

This game gets little things right. Heavy breathing when there are tense moments from the character, the way his hands interact with things... I really appreciate how much effort they put into his movement and actions, it's a big part of the why the scares work.

yes they are very nice details. That most devs would likely overlook.

One weird small, incosequential thing that has bothered me, is how well mannered some of the crazy enemies are, in that they always make sure to close lockers and such when they are done looking in them.

Yeah, this doesn't make sense to me.

?

I've only seen screen-tearing at the very beginning when you're driving up in the car. I haven't seen any while playing.

The game definitely occasionally tears. It's only occasional mind, but it happens in more than just that segment. It'd be very easy to miss in a game where you're regularly staring at pitch blackness, but I've definitely seen it more than once.

I'm streaming on Insane mode if any of you would like to join and root me on. Hopefully I could beat it on my first attempt and in a little over an hour. I'd appreciate some gaf support :)

Yeah, the game does have significant framerate drops and screen tearing in parts. The times it runs smoothly is when very little is going on, which is the majority of the game.

I'll be wrapping this up maybe this weekend. I doubt I'll be replaying this anytime soon, it loses much of its spectacle when you know every piece of scripted section, but I enjoyed my time with it.

I've got a friend coming over tomorrow night to try the game. If he starts a new game on my profile will it overwrite my save? I've never been clear on the save system in this game. Should I start him on a guest profile just to be safe?

Tragger
straight up scissorman from clock tower/game plays like a fps version of clock tower so I'm kinda curious if it was a nod to the series

Overall I enjoyed it alot. There's room for improvement but I think they did a really solid job on their first game as a company.

Its a damn shame that this awesome FREE game's OT is already on page 4.
Are people really too scared to play this ?

Making this kind of game must not be very lucrative, given the generation of wimps.

Just played this for a few hours with my headset on and I have to take a break for today. I don't know if it's because of the headset (think it is) but this game scares this shit out of me. Just had a passage where
this fat dude who rips you head off
ran after me and I had to circle around a room and squeeze myself through a narrow passage to get away from him. During this sequence I literally felt the adrenalin pumping into my brain because thanks to headset the moaning and steps of this guy make it feel like he was just a few steps behind me the whole 2 minutes or so that I was running away from him.

Yeah, this fucking game is intense.

How long is this game ? played it a bit tonight but need to take a break from it cos it's pretty intense. I like it, feels like a B tier Bioshock mixed with classic Resident Evil.

Some thoughts, Why wouldn't you play the game entirely in the camera view ? and why can't he take notes when not recording ?

Someone needs to tell these guys how a gamma setting works. Upping the game should not result in a brighter picture. 2.4 should be darker than 2. I think they got confused and named their brightness setting gamma.

I just finished the game, probably the best atmosphere since the REmake and Amnesia for me, even if doesn't touch the Resident Evil masterpiece. I jumped a ton and was legitimately scared in some sections, especially outdoors with the rain and lightning. Overall, I loved it and all of the files and character notes where super cool, I love in-game documents so much! Chris Walker reminded me of Nemesis a bit, minus weapons haha.

The story was pretty cool, I like the idea of realistic sci-fi Survival horror. I hope Red Barrels make a 3rd person SH game someday, I'd love to see their take on classic RE if any of their guys were fans. After all, there was a sketchy corporation in this game similar to a certain videogame pharmaceutical company...

Good to see people are enjoying it.

News on the Whistleblower DLC soon :)

Can't wait, just curious djshauny, are you a big fan of classic Resident Evil? I'd love to see you guys do a game set in a mansion like in RE1, seems like it would be up your team's alley.

Started playing it, 100'' projector + home theater screen in the dark in my basement...my 11 year old son next to me...first scare after opening a door...me and him screaming at the same time, my 9 yo daughter coming from upstairs asking if we were okay loll. Ok yeah turn off the game, will have to play this alone loll....when the kids are with their mom. Great atmosphere from the little I saw...
