Ok, I've got a probably ignorant question about the 5k/10k. Surely one of these guys feels if they give it 100% the whole way then they will be fastest. So how come they always take a slightly leisurely pace until a certain point? That favours the good finishers but why doesn't one of the strong competitors just take the initiative and gamble that no one can beat them flat out?

Centrowitz just did that. Not 100% for the whole 1500m, but he picked up the pace earlier than the other runners expected and they couldn't maintain his speed. He trained for that and gambled it would work.
 
how does farah always win when his best time is not even in top 25 of all time in 5000, and he's not even close to world or olympic records? you'd think someone would just outrun him. weak era,

He's simply the smartest runner of his generation

Also his finish and top speed are second to none
