360 Dpad watch.

I recently bought the SFIV Akuma FightPad and it's solid. It's much lighter than the standard wireless X360 controller, so it kinda feels cheap to me.

I played about 2hrs of SFII HD using the fightpad this weekend. The d-pad is good so far. I'm still having a slight problem doing dragon punch but that's it.

I've just updated the op with details about the Mad Catz drum controller so more people can be made aware of it, I'll add my impressions once mine arrives.

I can't make up my mind as to if I should buy the SFIV pad of the rockband drum kit. I just want something good to play 2D games with on the 360 and PC, but i'm leaning away from the rockband set because of the lack of shoulder buttons and only 4 face buttons. I could always just buy both, but I don't really want to :lol.

I'm looking to buy another pad before Super Street Fighter 4 hits shelves. I currently have one of the Mad Catz fightpads, like it a lot and never had any issues with it but that new Hori controller looks pretty awesome.

Anyone have experience with both? If so which do you prefer? Thanks.

Hey, someone should create an "Official NeoGAF Action Pad Thread for Arcade and 2D Gaming" - a sort of sister thread to the arcade stick one!

This is interesting stuff. I'd love a thread that could cover options for Wii and PS3 as well.

Should be perfect for SNK fighters as well. Oh, and Metal Slug! :D

Indeed I have been playing a hell of a lot of Metal Slug since I got this pad, I love it to bits! :D

The drums are also really great and responsive too!

Agreed, I could really do with a good retro controller for my PS3, I'm currently having to use a PS2 Mad Catz RetroCON plugged into a PS2 to PS3 adapter which looks incredibly messy.

Edit: Just ordered one of those 360 drum controllers, hopefully it's good as everyone says it is!

Holy crap. On Amazon UK it's equivalent of ~ $10, on Amazon US, it's 40!. First time I've ever had a major price disparity issue.

UK most likely has far more unsold stock.

let me tell you straight up: this thing is bloody fantastic! i just blasted through galaxy man's stage in mm9. it was glorious! controls are pitch-perfect. the dpad and buttons are super responsive. it's like night and day compared to the 360 controller. holy fuck... and all that for ÂŁ12.

to put this in perspective, i'm the guy who wrote this post.

thanks for the tip, radarscope1!
Had to order this one :lol It's ugly as hell, but the d-pad seems awesome. Price was pretty great too! Gonna play Futari and other shmups with this.

Is the SFIV dpad...mushy? looking through youtube vids, it just looks like it would feel similar to the stock 360 dpad :/

has anyone made a 360 controller with the Type S dpad? i still don't understand why the current controller doesn't just have the type s dpad. that thing was awesome

Just ordered the drum kit from Amazon UK. You guys were right, even with shipping it was less than $20, or so the currency converter tells me. Amazon US is selling it for closer to $40. Weird.

This might sound insane but since people are getting geeked up about these controllers, would anyone care to jump in an make a list of good XBLA games, XBLI games and/or shumps that only use face buttons? Or maybe an easier way would be to list a few of the really good 2D games that require shoulder/bumper buttons.

When I modded the rim around the my d-pad I used a black wireless controller and installed the Type S d-pad and the analog sticks from the Type S. The result was a pretty nice all-black 360 controller with a much improved pad. Still sucked for PMCE, though, and I haven't used it much since. Fun project, though.

I've got a drum kit on order too now. It will be useful since I don't have the drums for Rock Band yet anyway and the little pad looks pretty cool, even if I do already own the Street Fighter Pad. Thanks for the heads up.

The Saturn USB controller works with the PS3, just buy it, nothing else comes close.

Is there a reliable place I can order one? The only ones I can find are made by retrolink. Looks like Ebay is it. Ponying up for 2 genuine saturn usb controllers.

Sadly Ebay is pretty much your only option. Have a search here and at some fighting game communities to see if you can find any links to trusted sellers that are shipping the real thing. They should be manufactured by SLS and have a silver sticker saying so on the back, its a hassle, yes, but the payoff is definitely worth it.

I bought one through a PlaySega subscription.

This is an awesome post, and it sold me on buying it! Yes, I'm quoting it with the pics...because they are necessary.

I can tell your post was written from a truly oldschool gamer's perspective, and I appreciate that.

Slight problem here.

I just picked up a SFIV pad used because I found it for only $14. After purchasing it and getting it out of of the packaging, I found out WHY it was probably only $14: The 'RT' button sticks slightly. I have no option of returning it, so I was wondering if there is any way to get it to stop sticking? Like if I were to take it apart, what would I do?

Ultimatley it's not THAT big of a deal since it was so cheap and i'll probably never use the RT button anyway with the games i'll use it with, but any help in fixing this problem would be nice.

So does anyone know if the drumkit works for GH: world tour? I don't have rock band (PAL gamer) and I am not planing to buy it either but it could be fun to drum to GH.

(and I want to buy that Sega Mega Drive collection)

I had a sticky A key with a standard controller, I resolved this by banging the pad on a table. I wouldn't recommend that course of action, obviously. But it seems to work for most people when they just open it to let the keys settle, then screw it close again.

Pandoracell said:
When you say 'open', do you mean taking the pieces of plastic apart, or just loosening the screws?
Unscrewing, then pulling the thing apart a bit. Not enough that it falls apart though. As soon as there's space, the buttons should settle.

So I caved in and bought one of the mad catz drum kits from game crazy for 30 bucks after reading this thread.:lol For some reason or another Amazon didn't wanna ship to my address.

HOLY MOLY! One word: Responsive.

Really that just about sums it up, it's bloody responsive, I'm really surprised. I really wasn't expecting something this awesome to be a dorky pack in, or is the drum set the dorky part? Diagonals are a little hard to hit but I'm sure it'll wear in. Everything is nice and clicky for the most part, although the right button feels snappy there's no audible "snap".

I don't buy Arcades games but it's absolutely wonderful for the genesis collection. Something about the 360 pad just didn't feel right for playing S&K but this held up marvelously, especially on the bonus stages :D I just popped in BlazBlue on a whim and I practically shit myself. I can actually do Tager's 720 (well provided I link it into something) which I still can't do on my arcade stick :lol

I've tried the street fighter pad and promptly returned it. The rubbery feeling on the pad combined with it's large size and mushy feeling made short, quick or sliding movements almost impossible to for me to pull off compared to how quick and feedback friendly this is.

Seriously, if anyone is out shopping and finds one of these drum kits on sale pick it up asap it's just phenomenal, and the headphone jack is a nice bonus too. It really feels so much like an NES pad that I keep accidentally hitting B instead of A out of habit. The only real downside is the lack of shoulder buttons. But I wonder if it's possible to make some sort of clip on buttons that plug into the drum jacks. Would buy in a heartbeat.

How long is the cable? I'm so excited to get mine!

Wow another super positive set of impressions. Mine shipped on Wednesday so it should be here tomorrow. I don't think Mad Catz realise what they've hit on here, they could make a killing selling a repackaged version of this minus the drums.

OMG is that a real headphone-jack? As in a mini-jack? Will this output normal audio, or is the port dedicated to the game it was shipped with only?

While I don't have measuring tape or anything like that handy I'd guestimate somewhere between 8-10 feet. I was expecting it to be super short since it's just a little adapter but it's actually pretty much normal controller length.

EDIT: to answer dak1dsk1's question it's just the microphone jack, sorry lol. I just wasn't expecting it to have that.

I just wish mine had that even nice flat matte finish like the one pictured in the OP, unfortunately as is usually my case, I got one that was kinda wonky and uneven looking as you can see here as I'm too lazy to actually resize and post a shitty phone picture.

Not trying to be a dick. But it's right in the OP, and if I remember correctly not reading an OP before posting is a bannable(?) offense. Just a heads up :P

It seems the best contender may come from the most unlikely of sources. The Mad Catz "portable drum kit" includes a very spiffy NES style control unit that can be used as the perfect XBLA controller and its said to have the best dpad of any 360 controller. Detailed impressions in this post:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=19831575&postcount=81

It can be had for<ÂŁ12/$20 delivered worldwide from these two sources:

What baffles me is that when they try to create a good D-Pad they fail spectacularly and we are left with an unresponsive mushy lump. Yet this ultra basic controller which is only for designed for menu navigation has an amazing D-Pad and was probably thrown together with little effort and the most basic of parts.

All they have to do is redesign this to look like the old PS2 RetroCON and they are onto a winner.

I got mine this morning. This controller is awesome. :lol

Reminds me of a Master System or NES pad. MadCatz should release this as-is marketed as as retro controller.

Just ordered the new Hori controller as it seems like an good all-round controller for me pc, does anyone know if the sticks are more raised than on the ms controller?

I don't know about the 360 version, but my Street Fighter IV pad for ps3 is great. Works on both my PS3 and PC, so I can used it to play MVC2 on my console, or Street Fighter IV and my Sega Saturn games on my PC (don't have a USB Saturn pad)

I've thought for a long time that Microsoft should find a way to make a true, solid controller suited fr 2D games. Do a limited production run and sell it only online if they have. My brilliant idea was for them to license the exact Dreamcast configuration from Sega (because what are they doing with it?)

Madcatz could truly be onto something. Is there enough of a market for this kind of thing?? The arcade stick market is very small, too, but at least they can charge 150 bucks a pop for that.
