3DS December Update Thread

Folders are not needed at all IMO, my home screen looks awesome. A row for Apps, a row for Games and a row for trailers.

Lovely jovely.

Find Mii 2 is far better than I expected. They took every part and cranked it up, though that includes the BS room that requires certain Mii colours. Rehiring old Mii helps though.

This plus being able to save DSiWare games on the SD card rather than only the system menu are my main wants. It's ridiculous that I still have to clean the fridge when there's a perfectly usable mostly-free space SD card inside the system.
I would've been happy if there had simply been more internal space (DSi had 128 MB). There was a touch more since I didn't need the web browser anymore, but it's still kinda cramped.

But DSiWare is wrapping up in terms of relevance now, so I'm not too bothered.

How many spaces per page are you using? At 15 spaces (what I use) the NES games take up 2/3 of a page. Once the GBA games are released that'll be another 2/3 of a page. We need folders even if you don't.

Stretching it all the way, not that hard to scroll across the screen is it?

ehh.. you can save Dsiware games to SD since day one.
you cannot start them from SD card though(like on Dsi). This isn't possible ever according to devs

So, apparently folders is the next big demand of the 3DS, but I'd never even heard/read the suggestion before today.

I expect battery fix-level outrage over this one in no time.

All my apps just barely exceed one screen full, so....I'm good.

People have asked for folders for a while now.
You see it more now that more stuff has been released and space is filling up.

That's what he's talking about.

Where is that gaffer with the QR code avatar? I finally have a QR capable device (all my phones have sucked) and now I can't find anything outside of Google image search to use it on.

Did you take the bottom path and unlock the extra spot on the map?!

The Steetpass map is mind-boggling. I mean, it would be cool to fill up a globe of countries where people you've played games like Mario Kart show up. But no. It is literally a Streetpass map, so only the people you have Streetpassed show up. I was pretty happy with my 22 Streetpass hits, but of course 21 of them are from the UK. Because, you know, that's where I live.

Prediction: One Nintendo fan will blog about his journey around the world to fill in his Streetpass map. I would actually love to do something like that. But I can't afford it. You think Nintendo will sponsor me?!

I work in NYC... Next door to the airport :)

Glad the update is turning out well but I really would like confirmation that the Ambassador Program transfers when doing 3DS to 3DS. I bought a Zelda 3DS on black Friday and have been waiting for this but I don't want any hassle when the GBA games hit (like sending both consoles to Nintendo which is what they make you do for Wii still correct?)

Looks like I'm thinking faster than I type again :p

I don't think that'll happen because it probably runs them just like a DSi would and DSiWare is stored and run internally on a DSi also.

Also, just get a bigger SD card. You can use up to a 32GB one and SD cards are relatively cheap. Are you still using the default 2GB and almost out of room? Yeesh.
I think my SD is 4GB, but I was saying that it's mostly empty so that's not an issue. It's just kinda silly to have a mostly empty SD card that could be used for storing and playing DSiWare games, but instead I still have to clean the fridge because DSi games are played from the limited internal memory.

And I know some dev said it would be impossible to run DSiWare games from an SD card, but I don't buy that. Nintendo got WW and VC games running from SD on Wii, why can't the same be done here?

oha ok, I was wondering cause he wrote "save" and not "start"
Yeah, I meant to say start. All my DSiWare is backed up to the SD, but I have to save, delete, copy, if I want to play something that's not on the internal memory already. I feel like we should be able to move passed issues like this in 2011.

They're still copied into the main memory or RAM or something before they run. I'm pretty sure Wii games don't run off SD cards.

So guys, here's a guide on how to convert 3D videos to the 3DS (posted by an user from GBATemp):

http://www.socoder.net/index.php?blogs=29000

It's easy enough, I'm already watching some 3D po... I mean, the Avatar 3D trailer. Shame I still get a slight audio delay with the default settings :/ Gonna try another video.

Edit. Oh and BTW, can't upload it, it's so damn big (~150 MB), so it would be better you do it by yourselves.

Yeah that's true. But you know what I mean... an easy and (relatively) seamless solution that can save me a few steps. But I've probably talked more about this issue than I really cared about it. I don't play DSiWare that much anyway, I was just mentioning this as something that's weird to not have a solution for by now.

This isn't the thread from last night. Oops.

Still, loving the new stuff. I'm going to become a 3D pornography director now.

I expect it's simply because it's a big engineering effort to add, and DSiWare's time is fading (if you could even really say it ever took off... too many people considered it not worth their time, which I think is really sad.) For WiiWare, Nintendo was still trying to make it a viable platform, so it made sense to invest in building the SD Card Menu.

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Were they people you played with? Did they say they were there via "invitation"? I think that's a feature that's been around since the beginning—I was StreetPassing nintendogs at E3 and have a bunch of Mii Plaza residents that I believe came via nintendogs StreetPasses, but not the Plaza proper. I expect that your 40 Miis came over via a similar feature with Mario Kart online play.

I'm still not really sure what this SpotPass Mii thing is, but I'm intrigued.

That's what I'm wondering as well. It seems to be something different than the "Invite Miis" feature, which is what determines if people you've played with online will show up in your plaza. That would explain why people were having MK7 opponents show up in their plaza even before this update released.

Confirmed that you keep EVERYTHING on the 3DS you transfer TO?

I don't know why no one has looked this up yet. I guess here's the answer to everything that gets transferred.

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/sy...ansfer&submenu=ctr-gi-apps-transfer-what-data

I literally just finished transferring systems. I'll sniff around, but it looks like literally EVERYTHING gets transferred. As in, I've got the same number of play coins I had this morning. I'll look further to make sure nothing is missing.

One thing to point out, though... your eshop games on the source system get moved to the SD card as part of the process. When you're done, you're supposed to switch SD cards between the two systems. The on screen instructions are a little vague about that, and I could see somebody missing that.

Everything except your dignity for having purchased an otherwise identical system in a different color.

(Note: I am not actually confirming this, since I only know what I've read in this thread.)

I'm transfering from my sister's 3DS to mine, waited for a Zelda version myself ;) no shame!

Just wanted to confirm sleep-mode downloads do work, though for the first 1/2h after the queuing up the download was at 0%. But I guess they're still ironing out things server-side.

I've done this before, but here's why I don't think folders are a big deal.

I have my Home screen set to 4 rows high. The first page has the cartridge icon, my built-in 3DS software, 3DSWare, and some of my favorite DSiWare/VC games. This first page is a bit of organized chaos, but it works for me.

7U1PS.jpg

I tap the right arrow once and I have a page with nothing but DSiWare.

8IIBc.jpg

Right arrow again, nothing but NES games.

YVA5H.jpg

Once more and I have a page of 3D videos.

6ZIbg.jpg

Last page has my settings icon, download play, safety app, Nintendo Zone, and Netflix (I'm not a Netflix member so I don't use it.)

f1CX1.jpg

Functionally, this is basically the same as having folders. If you don't have as many icons, then you won't have as much space on the menu, so just use fewer rows per page so you'll have as many pages as you need for the amount of software you have.

When my daughter bought herself a 3DS at Best Buy this week, I loaned her the last $20... I did briefly consider waiving that if she'd trade up from my blue to her red. ;-)

I've wanted folders since the Wii was launched. Anything with an icon-based OS should include the option for folders. I mean, they were only introduced by Apple in the earlier '80s, you'd think Nintendo would have caught on by now.

This, also we have 60 slots, it's not like we desperately need that update next week. Would be cool in the future though, as adding more functions that can run while playing a game, or a trashcan.

Yeah, and iOS adopted them not long ago. Your point being?

Apple themselves didn't use folders in iOS until iOS 4. Not saying having no folders is acceptable though.

That may be true, but it took Apple until iOS 4 to introduce folders in a comparable setting (handheld device with grid-like, icon-only interface). Maybe Nintendo will take the hint and implement something more quickly, but if even Apple was that far behind the curve....

Edit: Heh, beaten by a good 3 5 minutes.

I agree that we don't desperately need folders right now. But later on down the line, I will get annoyed at the extreme amount of scrolling that I need to do.

I do want to see it come to the 3DS sooner, rather than later.

Works for you but I hate how it looks, sorry.
I have my own system that's going to be broken soon as I get a few more games

No folders isn't killing me, but it'd be nice.

Free? Weren't we getting those games because we payed a huge overprice for the 3ds?

I don't know about you, but when I paid $250 for my 3DS I had no idea they'd be giving me 20 free VC games, and I had no expectations for it. I paid $250 because I felt the system was worth it. I'm thankful that Nintendo is giving us the free games so we won't feel burned by the early price drop. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

It wasn't overpriced when you bought it.

If it was, you are a really bad consumer.

Re folders: I have BEAUTIFUL CHAOS. Basically, stuff is where I put it and it stays there. It works shockingly well!

Man the 3DS is such fucking garbage when it comes to connectivity. Can anyone help here? I got a new router a while ago and forgot I had to change my settings on my 3DS to go online, so I do it, it can't find my access point for reasons that can't be explained. So I go whatever, and input it manually, unsurprisingly the shit doesn't work either.

Anyone know what's wrong or what haxx I gotta do to get this shit working?

Did they force you to pay that "huge overprice"? Or did you buy it because you wanted to?

No, they didn't. I bought it because I'm a nerd but this is the first time I felt completely ripped off.

They made a 120 euro pricedrop few months after the release. Yeah, I'd rather get that sum back than those damn VC games. The VC games were the LEAST they could do for ripping people off like that. Should I be happy? Not one bit, but I'll take it. Just don't call it free, thank you. If it was free then people who bought it after the pricedrop would get it too.

I've never had trouble connecting the 3ds to my hidden home hotspot. But you get to give a bit more details of what goes wrong.
