$99 New 3DS Black Friday Deal

are these still supposed to be $99 if found in stores? I just saw three of the black ones in a case at a walmart. I'd go back for 'em, I just didn't have my card on me.

I don't know about the rest of you, but my dual TN N3DS is fine for me. I've set brightness at 5 with no auto-bright and it looks great. These things were hard enough to get without the additional IPS lottery.

Thanks to you guys, I think I've found what I wanted! I stopped at the local Walmart in town yesterday before traveling back home from Thanksgiving visit. Surprisingly, there were 5 SM3DL bundles, each $149. I asked the electronics associate if he could check the serials first before buying. He opened the glass to check each one, and the last happened to have serial starting YW7011 (the rest were YW7013). Here's a few shots against my MM 3ds xl, ips top lcd, tn bottom. OFW 10.7 installed.

What city are you in that they had five of those left in store??

Wow, those viewing angles :o

makes me wish I kept both my N3DS pre-orders from Amazon. instead I canceled the black and kept the white.

The pics don't do it justice. ;) The black one is my MM 3ds xl for comparison. Good luck with your pre-order!

I can't find anything on my model.... QW1116

With IPS, I can see the screen just fine at an extreme angle?

I don't know anything about other serials, other than what I quoted the guys who piqued my curiosity to check Walmart the other night. I might have bought one off eBay just for the screens.

Here's what I was talking about earlier, with the backlight bleeding through the plastic.

I checked my white n3ds in the dark and cannot replicate that; seems there may be certain batches with this light bleeding. :/

Walmart Supercent in Clinton, AR

Opened my black one and turned it on to the language select screen, LCDs seem to be TN.

Yeah, I have a XL IPS but tbh, I don't that much. Didn't really check because I am still waiting on the screen protectors :/

Got my N3DS Black in the mail from Amazon today. I really love the way it looks. I had a white N3DS from the Happy Home Designer bundle (which I'm gonna sell now), but black looks so much better. I also love the faceplates, they have a great feel to them.

I have no idea if this unit is TN or IPS, but I think it might be TN. Is there a sure-fire way to verify via serials or some kind of test?

I'm still holding onto my Majora's Mask N3DS XL in case I ever wanna switch back...

It's strange that this is a thing for only some units but not a big deal anyways. It's only ever visible in the dark, and less so with brightness turned down a bit.

Picture significantly washes out when viewing it at a strong angle.

So right now no way to confirm whether a panel is IPS or TN correct? I mean we can speculate based on viewing angles but no serial numbers to check or other "semi official" method.

Hearsay, viewing angle shenanigans, and the magic 7011 in the mario land bundle if you can find it. It's ultimately a worthless thing to think about for the black friday bunch of 3DSs because they were limited stock to begin with.

There is a homebrew utility that will tell you whether you have TN or IPS.

For the record, my black N3DS I picked up at my local Fry's on Thanksgiving has dual TN, confirmed by 3DSIdent. I'm not mad though, considering I've been using a dual TN original 3DS XL for the past 3 or so years. Also, the damn thing was only $99, so I can hardly complain.

I dunno, I think it's very obvious when you see the difference in pictures. When you see it you really cant unsee it. In regards to serial numbers and batches, there is no definitive data yet.

This reminds me...everyone that's buying an n3DS for the first time: please turn off the auto brightness. It's the shortest implementation of auto brightness that I've ever come across. Constantly keeps changing, and very overtly (whereas on phones it's kind of a fade change). I don't know what Nintendo was thinking when they added the feature like this. How it got beyond QA is absurd. Shouldn't be surprised though as Nintendo's hardware quality has been dropping for a while now.

Thanks for the advice ... Huge difference :D

My 3DS arrived at the proxy shipper. Should get it by next week. Even with shipping it still cost me half as much as they are here. Only thing that worries me are dead pixels, since I can't easily return it.

Is it possible to find ANY US 3DS online AT ALL? My old US 3DS XL just broke down (circle pad problem) and I need a new one asap. I live in Europe so it has to be online, all I could find is that stupid Amazon Lime green XL and I don't want black interior. Is this my only option?

Damn, Pokémon. Because of you I can't replace my 3DS.

Oh yeah, any guide for easy transfer of games and saves? I think I heard that there are some issues?
I forget where I found it (probably Neogaf), but there is a good guide about transferring out there. The language can be a little confusing from what I remember.

The easiest and fastest way is to just swap the SD card into the new 3ds (or transfer the data to the new card from your old one using a computer). It saves a ton of time since the wireless transfer of everything can take a LONG time.

Oh, I can just put the SD card in the new one to speed and ease things up? That's nice.

I'll try googling more solutions when I get home.

How about a 2DS?

Thanks. I may reuse a 128 card I have sitting around.

I don't recommend a 128GB card. It will work but will probably cause longer boot times and pauses/lag when navigating the home menu (at least with custom firmware). This is mentioned in the homebrew guide FAQ and I verified it myself with a stopwatch and a 64GB card vs 128GB one. Stick with 64GB max if you can.

Part of me regrets getting black and not getting white.
I was super bummed that I was only able to score the black one on Amazon so I went to Gamestop at 5am to get a white one. I wanted the white because I liked the way it matched other faceplates and liked how the current faceplates didn't reflect so much in the light, making the icons less visible to others ( I still get somewhat embarrassed as an adult playing videogames in public so Mario and Luigi being so visible on the black faceplate was a potential issue for me). But after having them both side by side I sold the white one to a buddy. The matte black finish is so sleek and sexy I fell in love with it instantly. Also after my kid gets a hold of the white one I was nervous about it getting very dirty. You might change your tune when you get the black in person

So many pros/cons between the new system and my OG 3DS XL (Link Between Worlds version). No idea which one I'll want as my primary...

While I personally prefer the white one, because of how nice the coloured buttons look on the white background, if you have any issues with things like fingerprints or dirt showing up then go with the black one.

This is my first 3DS and while I'm really enjoying it, my one minor quibble is the power button. I've never had such difficulty trying to turn a device on and off as I am with this one. I have to dig my fingernail into it just to press it and it doesn't feel responsive at all. They way I have to turn it and grip it awkwardly while the shell is open just to power it off is pretty annoying, but a minor quibble nonetheless. Is there a way to turn it off when the screen is closed? I got it to work one time but I can't find a proper indicator that it is powering down when closed

The auto brightness is crap, but I still prefer it to having to adjust the brightness manually. It reminds me of the auto brightness on my old second-gen iPod Touch running iOS 2. It sometimes changes when it shouldn't, but it ends up in the right place.

If you keep holding the button for a few seconds it will turn off when the screen is closed. You can also turn it on when the screen is closed.

But yeah the power button sucks (at least on the XL, don't know if it's any different on the smaller one). I don't have to use my fingernail at all on my New XL though.

My black N3DS is definitely a TN panel. It is pretty bad looking, but it's for my kid anyway and she won't care.

I don't think I've used the power button on my N3DS since I've purchased it. It's either being played, in sleep mode, or charging.
Same, the only occasion that I use the power button is if I let the battery die and have to turn it back on after charging.

Regarding the auto-brightness I turned that off as soon as I figured out that it was a thing. I couldn't understand why my n3dsxl screen looked so terrible compared to my OG 3dsxl. It was the auto-brightness.

Finally picked up my black new 3DS at Toys r Us. I honestly forgot I ordered it. Very surprised they held it this long.

They have yet to ship out for people who bought it 5 days ago. I feel like an idiot for paying extra for 3 day shipping now. Maybe I should ask for a refund.
