A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

Is there a way to make new "tabs" open in the background? I imagine this is more of a Safari thing but I figured it's worth a shot.

This is my favorite iPhone 'app' by far. Get more use out of this than anything else. This part made me cry though... for the longest time, I was wondering why the website didn't have support for control panel/subscribed threads/user settings. Then I realized I wasn't signed in. D'oh! I think I will subscribe to this thread so I can regularly tell ckohler how much I want to have his manbabies.

100 Reply browsing can be a little tedious, could you maybe put some buttons that make it so we can go to the top or bottom from anywhere in the thread?

Are you using iPhone?

1. On iPhone you can get to the top instantly by hitting the time/status bar anywhere in the page.

2. You can get to the bottom by hitting the \/ arrow in the title bar at the top of the thread.

3. If you want to be able to get to the bottom from anywhere in the thread, or any site, you should get the bookmarklets (scroll to bottom, find in page, etc). Info on that here.

I don't think putting scroll bottom arrows in every header would be too smart, as there doesn't seem to be much room but then again ckohler is a creative fellow so who knows. I use the scroll to bottom & find bookmarklets a lot on my iPhone and they may help you out for now.

Is it just me or is the webapp a little wonky right now?

Whenever I go to search, the button reacts, but does nothing, whenever I go to post, the button reacts but it doesn't actually post. To be clear, I can hit reply at he bottom of a page, but I can't post.

Both the post button and the search button are on the same part of the screen, and I'm not having a problem with anything else... Seeing PMs, changing pages, etc all work fine.

Is there a reason why Opera is not allowed? I'm using opera on windows mobile 6.5. It used to work a couple months ago.

My user agent is Opera/9.50 (Windows NT 6.0; u; en) Presto/2.1.1

There's already that universal "feature" on the iphone where you tap anywhere near the top of the screen and it'll scroll lists all the way up. And since the thread headers in this Neogaf webapp double up as a quick-scroll-to-the-bottom button, getting the last post is just a mere two taps away heh

Edit: lol didn't realize I was beaten to it

If you change your setting on neogaf.com to only show 50 posts per thread, it will appear that way in the web app as well. Otherwise, just tap the white bar at the top of the screen then tap the \/ in the thread title to quickly jump to the bottom.

Sounds like you have Javascript disabled. Make sure you have it turned on as both of those features require it.

It looks like your browser is spoofing a desktop user-agent. Try entering "about:config" into the address bar and see if you can change it to an actual mobile browser user-agent.

I like the idea but there appears to be no way to add bookmarklets without adding it to a dekstop safari installation / syncing bookmarks to the iphone, meaning bookmarklets are not an option for people who don't use safari. That's obnoxious. Typical of apple though, I guess.

I used this on my LG KS360 (horrible phone) and for some reason whenever I try to login your app always complains that Javascript is not on when it is. Maybe something you've overlooked in your code?

You can sync your bookmarks from iPhone to IE or Safari, bookmark the bookmarklets on the PC and sync back. I use Firefox, but from start to finish it only took a minute or so.

hi, i know, i know, reviving old thread but i would to say thanks and that I was pleasantly surprised to see this works perfectly on my HTC hero.

awesome :D

So, I'm a moron; is this a traditional app in the sense that I download it and add it to my phone's home screen, or do I just use it as a safari bookmark (www.secondapps.com/neogaf) because that seems to be working just fine so far. :lol

Safari bookmark. But Bookmark it to your homescreen so it shows as an app icon.

Read a few pages of the thread.

Does the webapp not show post (not thread) titles?

To be updated.

You are correct, sir.

This thing is perfect now, my day would stuck without mobile GAF.

One question, is it possible to take this code and make a neogaf app? That's the only way I could see this being any better.

How would it be better that way?

Well apart from us being able to support it financially.

This way at least, there's nothing hanging over Ckohler's head, and he can update it and have it instantly 'pushed out' to all users. No approval process.

plus having it work on the millions of phones out there with browsers, not just iphones

Hey, it's been over a month and this question still hasn't been answered. Any ideas at all?

Another fix tho I've always seen it as a bit of charater on the app is when using small text some text in quotes shows up big. It's done it since the option was available.

I'll look into this. I left them off because most of the time nobody uses them and I was focusing on making the pages scroll less.

I have an idea or two but this is a pain for me to test and if I accidently cause log-ins to break while testing, it could cause a lot of headaches for everyone.

Is there a way to reply to PM's from mobile gaf?
Not yet. That's on my list of features to add along with PM paging.

Just want to say thanks, I love this webapp and often prefer it to the desktop version. Great work, and the continual improvements keep making it better.

Works great on Opera Mini on my Blackberry, only problem i have is that the User's avatar and title takes up too much space between each post.

Just got on Ipod Touch yesterday, I will for sure be making this the most frequently visited site on it :D Thanks a ton for this bro!

i really love it for my htc magic, or whatever its called in america

myTouch 3G which isn't pathetic and clearly has nothing to do with the iPhone 3G or the name Apple and it's nerds hate but everyone seems to use for the iPod Touch, the "iTouch." Nope.

This Webapp is magic. I use it every day. Would love to donate, this thing keeps me sane during massive corporate committee meetings :)

I just found out today that the webapp doesn't respond to the highlight tag. I only discovered that because I used it in my own post so it's not a very popular tag anyway.

Important Notice!

I got an e-mail from my web host today (Dreamhost.com) that the site where I host the web app has been consuming too much CPU usage (probably the web app itself), so they have temporarily disabled the entire domain completely. I have contacted support to see what my options are. Initially, they appear to be suggesting I upgrade to a private server solution but this could cost $$$ depending on how much memory my PHP scripts require... for which I have absolutely no idea.

Further information as it develops. In the mean time, the web app is unavailable.

Do you have any information on how much bandwidth it is eating up? I guess if nothing else shows up I can host it.

I knew something like this was gonna happen. This app needs to be hosted or just coded off GAF servers.

Damn.

Right, there's 2 options.

1. optimize your php code (we've got some gaffers that can be of help, including myself) and hold out for as long as your current plan can.

2. get a dedicated server and setup a paypal acc so gaf can help out that way. still some optimization is helpful so your scripts won't eat to much cpu (once again we can help out).

Pretty crap service to just pull your app down though, maybe a different host wouldn't be so bad either.
