Wow! You all weren't kidding about how awesome Swype is! I've been using it for 10 minutes so far and am blown away. (and am currently using it to "swype"this message). I can't wait to get really good with this thing!

The drum rimshot widget is proving to be far more useful than I originally thought.

I've been getting more use out of Instant Buttons then any normal person should. The "YEAAAAAAAAAAH" one and "Sad Trombone" (losing sound from Price is Right) are spectacular in the right situation.

I still don't see the big deal here. Help me understand the hype.

Say, for instance, I'm on the road providing a service for someone. I want to accept credit cards instead of cash. Boom. No need for some standalone device with a complicated back end. Just need my phone.

This looks awesome. If I had a business, I'd use it. Fuck it. I'll sign up anyway. If my friends ever have to pay me via credit card, they can do it now.
Ooooo, now thats a fun way to go.

So it really is a more business oriented app, despite the consumer use potential.

All valid complaints. I was referring more to the rendering engine, as pages look as good as they are going to in any browser on Android.

They're both based on WebKit (as are Safari and the iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad browsers), but they're pretty much different beasts altogether.

I do wish that the native browser had Chrome browser sync, though. If anyone really wanted to do it, Chromium could probably be ported, but not without a bit of hair-pulling.

Is there an app that allows you to set each alert to whatever you want, like i'd like to set the tone for emails and text msgs separate...

You can set that in the applications themselves. Go into the app you want to change it for, and go into the settings. :D

I joined the Android family today and I'm loving my Nexus One. The only issue I'm having is syncing. I hate iTunes, but love the ability to sync video and crap straight to my phone. I have doubletwist, but it just sucks. Some podcasts wont sync for no reason, and video is even worse. Is there a better syncing solution for android?

I download the music app 3 (cubed) that was recommend in one of these Android threads and I have to say this is an amazing app for only being in beta. I wouldn't mind if Google paid this guy and kept the player to themselves. I dislike the actual cube view mode, but the wall and boring modes are awesome. Still needs to work a few things out but I find it better than the stock sense which isn't that hard to do. I love Android.

I use iSyncr. It syncs music incredibly. I think it syncs movies and videos but I'm not sure.

I handle podcasts from the Listen app, so can't help you there, but syncing with iTunes, iSyncr is the way to go.

How does the Listen app handle podcasts? Does it automatically download the latest podcasts then delete them once you are done?

Google Maps got updated and added location sharing for Sms like Solideliquid has been wanting. It also added an independent app icon for navigation. Pretty sweet update.

It's almost the same as the app the market called navlauncher :lol

wow!

http://gizmodo.com/5536751/android-22-vs-android-21-froyo-is-450-faster

The folks at Android Police have a Nexus One which is running Android 2.2 (also known as Froyo) and they've tested just how much better the new version of the mobile OS performs compared to the old. Results are impressive.

You can check out the benchmarks so far over at Android Police. I'll be here, drooling at the thought of Flash, speed, and performance gains.

http://androidandme.com/2010/05/news/jit-performance-boost-coming-with-android-2-2/

It looks like our earlier reports that a JIT compiler was coming soon to Android have come true. AndroidPolice has posted some screens for the popular benchmark app Linpack running on Android 2.2 which indicates a large performance boost. A normal stock Nexus One generates a benchmark score of 6-7 MFLOPS, while the same Nexus running Android 2.2 is able to score 38-40 MFLOPS.

I'm not seeing that. I hate that they provide no update notes.

Yes, it can automatically download latest podcasts and it will store up to a number you specify. It can also be set to download only when charging and/or only when there's a wifi connection.

As for deleting, it doesn't automatically delete strictly based on when you're done with a podcast, it automatically deletes podcasts based on the total you specified to store and then starts deleting once you go over that based on what you've listened to. So it will keep podcasts you've listened to for a period of time.

Does anyone have a list of the up coming features for froyo?

Haven't seen anything officially compiled yet, but this seems to be what's confirmed/semi-confirmed for froyo:
  • Flash Support
  • JIT Compiler (~450% perf. gains?!?)
  • Store apps on card
  • New user tutorial
  • Search bar with alternate search options
  • Phone and Browser icons added to launch bar

updated kernel which allows access to more internal memory storage

Those are some crazy gains in quite specific benchmarks that might well tend to benefit disproportionately from JIT.

True, never thought of it that way. Still to increase 450% is pretty cool even though the effects won't be as drastic in real life applications.

btw, are you rocking a Desire these days? I remember you had expressed interest in it a while back. Did you actually get one? I decided to pass cause I didn't want to do my poor Hero injustice by ditching it so soon.

Yup, ended up selling my soul to Carphone Warehouse to get an unbranded Desire rather than waiting for O2 to get their arse in gear... Truly it is a thing of beauty. Can't wait to see how FroYo performs on it, though.

Awesome. Just as things seem to be finally moving for the 2.1 upgrade for the Hero this whole lot of drool inducing FroYo stuff start coming out.

Goddammit.

I'll make it a point to get one of the first FroYo phones which HTC releases.

Well, yeah, I'd expect the kernel to be updated. But, noted. Also found a few other things that have been making the rounds that seem likely:

  • Flash 10.1 Support
  • JIT Compiler (significant perf. gains)
  • Store apps on card
  • New user tutorial
  • Search bar now has alternate search options
  • Phone and Browser icons added to launch bar
  • updated kernel using less internal memory
  • Support for FM radio
  • Open GL ES 2.0 enhancements
  • Automatic App Updates (Enable/Disable)
  • Color Trackball support
  • Wireless N support

Again, list of confirmed/rumored updates in Android 2.2

It'd be funny if Froyo was so optimized the G1/MyTouch were upgraded to it. :lol 1.6 to 2.2 is a pretty giant leap.

looks great - i know i've mentioned it a few times, but they really need to get the wifi proxy settings going too, hopefully it is a stealth feature of 2.2

agreed - it'd be an awesome solution to the 'fragmentation issue'

Is the untethering of core apps from OS updates (like mail) to help combat fragmentation one of things expected in froyo or in the next release? I didn't put that on the list because I wasn't sure.

Yep. The idea is that instead of being held hostage to get cool things, you can go download the latest gallery app or mail app, etc, and atleast get the ball rolling and a lot of the new features. It's pretty smart imo.

Damn I hope Motorola updates the Milestone to 2.2. The 2.1 update is so broken (alarms don't work, music starts playing randomly from speakers, random reboots, radio problems etc etc) all not present in 2.0.1 :(

sounds like it's time for you root and install custom firmware...

Any word on which phones are getting froyo? After the moto droid 2.1update/duke nukem forever catastroph(ies), I won't hold my breathe. ..

i dont think 2.2 is as monumental an upgrade as the previous upgrade was, hopefully it will be rolled up much quicker. Non senseUI phones will probably get it earlier than ones with custom home screens... nexus one most likely asap

Decoupling honestly sounds like one of the philosophical points I'd expect Google to emphasize, which is why I'm surprised it's taken this long for them to do it.

Next, they need to make a Market API so non-"with Google" devices can get Market apps, and programs like doubleTwist can offer real app syncing. The Market is actually a remarkably closed app if you get right down to it.

Last time I contacted HTC they were not giving up anything on Foryo for the Hero. 2.1 in June for sure, but they told me to ask after that for Froyo.

if sprint could get their shit in order it would be out by now. They still want it out by end of next week, presumably for a bullet point about fixing fragmentation at I/O

This, fucking sucks ass.

The music thing is HORRIBLE, I think it mostly happens if you're playing it through the headphone jack (like I *did* in my car), then if you get a phone call or something later on the music will START PLAYING OUT OF NOWHERE while you're in a call. I've had TWO different freakin songs playing at once while on a call, wtf

And don't think milestone roots well, no bootloader access or something =( fuck me
