Not new, I posted about it a bunch of pages back. :D I love it.

Just right know I don't have XBMC set up :-/

It still has not hit the Market yet huh?

they say when they're happy with it.

the app fc'd a few times but no big deal, i still love it.

No idea where else to ask this.

I just got a $5 Amazon mp3 credit for ordering Red Dead. If I use the built in Amazon MP3 store on the droid will that credit be applied?

Its one of the most polished apps in beta I've seen. Once it hits the market I'm buying.

Looking to buy an ION2 pc to put XBMC down the road. This app is going to be super useful.

Is 2.2 supposed to have bluetooth voice-command? If we can get this, I would be able to access anything on my phone via my car handsfree kit. It seems like a pretty simple thing to add, and it opens up the already strong voice-command features on the phone. Are there any apps that allow this? PEACE.

Its applied to your account so as long as you use your account it should use your credit automatically

has anyone used the snesemulator with the Wii remote? if so how do manage game controls considering the snes has 6 action buttons and the wiimote only has 2.

Question for mint.com users, I got the app installed and was wondering if I can make it update via the app instead of logging onto the site.
It refreshes on the app, but it's not as current as I'd like, I have to go into the site and click on the actual account and it'll refresh giving me the transactions.
Sorry if that's a little too vague or it's been asked, I slightly combed through the thread but didn't see too much.

I tried sacrificing Select and using the rest of the buttons to fit in X, Y, R, and L but it sucks. One of the two developers said he already has Classic Controller working for a future release so I'm just sticking to the Droid keypad for now.

http://techcrunch.com/2010/05/13/ex...-tethering-wifi-hotspot-to-android-2-2-froyo/

is this old? new to me - awesome

Google added a plastic desert sculpture of a frozen yogurt outside of their Android building today (here’s Eclair, the last version), indicating the imminent arrival of the next version of the Android operating system, Android 2.2, AKA Froyo.

In addition to full Flash support and a whopper of a speed improvement, we’ve just confirmed something that’s even more stunning. Froyo will have built in USB tethering so you can share your data connection with your laptop, something Apple and AT&T still haven’t managed to allow in the U.S. And even better: you can turn your Android phone into a portable wifi hotspot as well.

You can see the tethering and wifi hotspot features in the screenshots above. One thing that isn’t clear from the information we’ve received is whether carriers can turn this feature off, or even charge for it, unless they break away from the standard Android build.

This is, of course, terrific news for Android users. I still believe Android phones, paired with Google Voice, are the closest thing to mobile nirvana to date. With tethering and wifi hotspot features, Apple and others have some serious catching up to do.

Expect Froyo to officially launch no later that the Google I/O event next week. And we’ll have Vic Gundotra, Google’s VP responsible for product management and marketing for mobile products, on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt the week after next.

I think that's by
terrible
design. There are complaints on the blog. (I can't remember the URL, I'm sure Google will help you.)

Mint is great but it still has its issues. Having to go to the website to refresh the accounts just so the app can be up to date is one.

Another is the fact that it doesnt take into account any of your pending transcactions. Theres no "Current Balance" and "Available Balance" columns like I see on most bank websites these days. If you debit a few things, your balance on the website isnt even up to date until those transactions become finalized sometimes 2-3 days later. It doesnt make sense to me since my bank shows pending transactions and subtracts them from my available balance usually within an hour of the transaction.

If mint fixes these two issues, I think it would be perfect.

https://wwws.mint.com/support.event Go here and complain. Theres several topics on these issues already and mint claims to be working on some of them, though its been over a year since the complaints started and it hasnt been fixed yet.

Yep, saw it this morning. Seems there's a number of outlets who have gotten their hands on n1's with 2.2 onboard. I think we're going to get a series of "leaks" like this for the next week, leading up to Google IO.

Android 2.2 List updated (some items rumored, not all confirmed):

  • Flash 10.1 Support
  • JIT Compiler (significant perf. gains)
  • Store apps on card
  • New user tutorial
  • Search bar now has alternate search options
  • Phone and Browser icons added to launch bar
  • updated kernel using less internal memory
  • Support for FM radio
  • Open GL ES 2.0 enhancements
  • Automatic App Updates (Enable/Disable)
  • Color Trackball support
  • Wireless N support
  • USB Tethering
  • Enable as portable Wifi Hotspot

usb tethering and portable hotspot makes me fear this update through a provider. Don't most providers block this kind of thing? Wouldn't this only delay the certification process?

one of the few times where i love having the n1

the only thing my nexus one is sorely missing is good games. hopefully google will have something to show off at next weeks conference

really looking forward to putting 2.2 on :D

sounds like it's time for you root and install custom firmware...
Unlike the droid, which is essentially the same phone but cdma, the Milestone's bootloader is signed and no one has managed to crack it. At most we can root it due to a buggy recovery partition, but that's all.
When questioned why things turned out so shitty for Milestone users, motorola said the droid will be their only open phone and an exception and if we wanted a development phone we should have bought HTC (I shit you not, they said it like that).
With the stuff coming out right now I doubt anyone will care to spend time trying to crack it. It's my first and last motorola product.

How is Android in general for playing media? More specifically just playing MP3s? I'm looking for a new phone and I'm posting in this thread because Android is at the top of my list (Well actually Windows Mobile 7 is but I can't afford brand new phones and apparently you won't be able to upgrade 6.5 phones to 7)

Well, until yesterday I thought that my old trusty iPhone 2G had better sound quality than my Nexus One. But I got the MW600 bluetooth stereo headsets and it makes my Nexus sound so great. So it depends on what hardware you are using. I presume that any Sony Ericsson Android phone will have great sound quality.

In terms of general media interface, Android needs a face lift. The music player set up is adequate, but it can definitely use some improvements. Some things I like about it, some I don't.

The Gallery app is a step in the right direction, but they need to address this. Hopefully we will get a mayor UI overhaul by 3.0.

spotify.

Say what you will about the stock music player, but at least it lets you create playlists, ON THE DEVICE. What a concept - maybe they should patent that ;)

Shhhh..:lol

Like I said, somethings I really like.
My friend recently gave me like 1,000 mp3s of Rock & Pop songs she wants me to listen to.
Not everything I like, so it's good to be able to just hit the menu and add songs I enjoyed to a specific list (on the go) to revisit later. :D

iphone lets you do that too though (unless that wasn't what you were implying)

one thing i feel is really missing from the ipod app on my iphone is the ability to 'play a song after the current one'.. so kind of creating a playlist on the fly that won't necessarily be saved as 'on the go'

currently the only option is to first create an on-the-go playlist, then add songs to it - which annoys me since i don't want to make a playlist, i just want to be able to select the next song i want to listen to without cutting off the currently playing song

the point of my post: does android allow for something like that? (in its stock app, or otherwise)

I was actually ribbing the iPhone implementation, because it's so awkward for such a simple exercise. Let people create their own playlist, give it their own name and add/remove songs. How hard is that? The on-the-go implementation with the iPhone is just counterintuitive.

But, to the point of your post, No, the stock android app doesn't let you do that either (select and queue the next song). Which is funny, because that's functionality I had on a MD Walkman back in 1999. It's sorta bizarre what gets ommitted from these players.

Sounds like Google is trying to ruin Cyanogen's party with all these cool new features. Next thing you know, we're going to find out 2.2 will let you underclock your phone.

Andrex said:
Nah, you'd need root to underclock. Google's not gonna give that out so easily.
I have never understood why over/underclocking is so protected on various devices. Are there legal issues I am unaware of? I realize it can be dangerous, but so can editing the Windows registry. :/

Yeah but overclocking is dangerous to hardware, which is more expensive and harder to replace. The CPU especially.

agreed - it is a bizarre omission from the stock apps on both platforms

and i see your point about the limited on-the-go playlist (i personally don't use playlists all that much for organising my songs so it hasn't really bothered me)

fine with me, whoever gets me the best experience

Ugh... I wish there was a Canadian hardware list =/. I was going to jump in with a droid (milestone here) but when I heard all the problems the milestone was having, I hesitated. Now I don't know what to do - the nexus one is available in Canada, but it's 500 bucksish straight money... which is a lot!

Xperia x10? :I just got it yesterday, it seem perfectly fine.

Also: didn't you ask for advise for anniversary gift.. 30 dollar limit due to budget constraint and now you are looking for smart phone? :O

That's also part of the problem, I've been trying to save for school for months and months, I really do want a smart phone, but no matter how I try to justify it, I can't do it. If someone were to drop a nexus one in my lap for 100 bucks, and offer me a 50/mo plan, I would take it - short of that... it's hard =/.

aren't you upset you'll be waiting months to get upgraded to 2.1 when everyone else (phones that matter anyways) gets 2.2 next week?

if u are on any plans atm and the contract is over, try retention...if you say u want to cancel they might offer a better monthly deal.

Can't do much since I get bundle discount with rogers. So either 150$ for xperia or 5xx for nexus one. they don't have anything else that is good =/

I don't have a cellphone! I am serious when I say that I budget like crazy.

i would assume earlier android phones won't see updates to 2.2

In a very particular order.

1. Nexus One
2. Droid
3. Droid Incredible

HTC fanboys are becoming just as droning as Apple ones.

Sense while neat looks comically naff and busy next to the X10 UXP. Sure Sony's slow updates are a pain, but I'll happily wait to get my 720p video recording as part of the package.

On a different note. I got to try Google Navigation for first time in a friends car at weekend, wow that works great. Accurate to the button.

Android 2.2 'Froyo' to include USB tethering, WiFi hotspot functionality

And the good Froyo news just keep flowing in. TechCrunch have flexed their exclusive muscle this morning in revealing their discovery that Android 2.2 will come with built-in tethering and WiFi hotspot support. That means you'll be able to use your phone's 3G internet connection to hook your laptop up to the worldwide webosphere, with a choice of wired or wireless methods. Of course, this dreamy scenario will be subject to the big bad network operators permitting -- or at least not forbidding -- you to do such awesome things with your hardware, but at least we know the goods are being baked into this forthcoming release from Google. Frozen yogurt for all!

##########

WOOOHOOO!!!! Wireless hotspot support for everybody (on 2.2 that is).
