DirecTV's NFL SuperFan application, which was on the iPhone when the season started, was released yesterday morning.

Perfect timing. I drove from St. Cloud to Cincinnati and didn't miss a snap (slight exaggeration as I did lose 3G for about 40 total minutes during the trip which made it freeze up). I had pretty bad luck with the iPhone version of the application (using a 3G, not a 3Gs) but yesterday was truly amazing.

Not Android specific, but holy shit what an age we live in. I was able to get home an entire day earlier than I had planned, simply because I was able to take my Sunday obsession on the road with me..

What's does the SuperFan application do? Why is it so useful for you?

Hah. Google did a quick 180 and now Google Maps with navigation is available in the Android Market for all 1.6 devices.

Grab it in the marketplace.

Note that it's still US only, so you'll have to use the other one if you live anywhere else.

Interesting how that means Nav is available to the Dream & Magic but not the Hero. Makes one think about how worthwhile it is to have Sense or any other add-on UI rather than a Google Experience device.

HTC hero owners will have 2.0 soon enough. They already said that. No conspiracy theories ok lol. Also if someone is really hot in the pants to run this they can root their phone.

When is 'soon'? One month? More?

You can't run Nav on rooted Heros yet. All of the ROMs are still 1.5.

What is a good mp3 player for Windows and android?

I used itunes for many years because I was forced to use it with ipod. Now that I'm finally free, I'm open to others. I tried windows media player 12 that came with windows 7 and it sucks!! Very hard to edit a group of songs, hard to add album art, and the whole ui is just crappy.

Maybe I'll go back to itunes if there is nothing good for windows.
There's always MediaMonkey. I only use it for its file conversion capabilities, but it seems like a great iTunes replacement.

If you do want to use iTunes still, then Salling Media Sync will let you sync your iTunes library and playlists straight to your Android phone (along with a lot of other devices). I plan on using it when I (hopefully) get the Droid Eris next month.

I really hope 1.6 spreads to every device running 1.5 very quickly. That way developers can focus on that version as the base line (due to its resolution support) instead of two versions. Thankfully T-Mobile's phones and the Droid are 1.6+, but the Droid Eris and Sprint's phones are not. Not to mention that the Archos tablets and one-off handsets like the General Mobile DSTL1 are still 1.5. 1.5 is a very solid release and it thankfully supports a lot of things like widgets and the software keyboard, but 1.6 lets you manage resolutions so much better...

Well that was always somewhat apparent, that it would be easier to update vanilla Android than Android plus some complex overlay.

I've heard January being tossed around a bit.

If you've used Sense than yes, you know it's worthwhile.

Plus I'm pretty sure it all goes back to the carriers + manufacturers setting up the update schedule and working together.

I literally watched any live game I wanted to while driving from St. Cloud MN to Cincinnati. I was roughly 20 seconds behind the radio when I flipped over just to compare. I watched the Packers second half live and flipped between all the afternoon games. Also had access to the Red Zone channel.

It's one thing to have conjecture about it, and it's another thing to actually have a highly desirable feature becoming available on a previous generation device weeks or months before it is available on a current device.

I would just like to say "FUCK YEA USTREAM!"

I have Qik and have used it a few times to show friends some funny things happening (and even a quick presentation) so that live streaming is really cool.

I've switched over to Ustream now though because not only do they have a live streaming from your phone app, but a viewer app. You can view live and recorded Ustream videos. Ustream has a ton of stuff on it...from tv shows to movies. It's an insane amount of content for free on your Android device, I suggest everyone get it.

Anyone know any good apps that are for To-Do lists that have voice recognition so I can add a task to it using my voice as well as typing? What about a notepad that uses voice? That would be awesome, too...

well i wanted to play the first one before and i did for a few minutes - seems like a solid point n click type game. don't have any personal impressions from the second one, and i probably won't for a while.

The best IRC app by far is Android IRC, but it costs around $5. If you're willing to spend it you won't regret it, but there are some decent free IRC apps too. None are as reliable and feature rich, though.

No idea about the rest.

EDIT: Oh wait, you're not talking about an IRC client, are you? Can't help you then.

I'm not really willing to spend cash on stuff; so I checked out AndChat and it's solid so far. Does what I need and is familiar to any old school IRC fans.

AndChat

Nice free Internet Relay Chat client. So far so good, no real complaints with it.

Unfortunately I have not found any good US Television guide programs. I used What's On on the iPhone and so far there's no equivalent I could find for Android. It's not imperative, but I like to know what's on TV when I go to bed at night.

I'd love an ebook app like Stanza on the iPhone. I found Aldiko and it's very well done but seems to be limited to .epub format only. :/

Any streaming video websites like youtube that works on android browser?

I tried hulu, gametrailers, and crunchyroll but it didn't work. I'm surprise there was 1 porn website that worked.

I tried converting some files using Stanza into .epub format but they come out formatted all whacked out and near unreadable. :/

Any suggestions as to what converter to try?

I'm using calibre, They certainly don't come out perfect but I'm not having any problems. I hope Stanza comes out soon but for now this is a solid fill-in.

I was told there was a NeoGAF app. After searching for it online and also in the Android Market, I'm embarrassed to say I just can't find it :(

Anyone want to point me in the right direction? What about the To Do List app I mentioned in post #118?

I've been searching for a Neogaf app as well. If the iPhone gets one, Android should have one too dammit. In fact, didn't the one on iPhone got rejected? I say we give all GAF support to Android.

Who's with me?

Also, I am in need of a good ereader. So many books, so little time.

Wow, so much wrong in this post...

There's a cross-platform web app written by ckohler that displays the same across all iPhone OS, WebOS, and Android devices. Most would say it's so good it makes a native app obsolete.

However, there's also currently both native iPhone and Android apps being written by anovice with ckohler consulting. The iPhone version is taking priority because of Apple's arduous app review process, though both should launch at around the same time. Anovice has also considered shifting focus to the Android version in the future, too.

Essentially they are the same as the web app, except for some nice things like persistent controls and accelerometer support. They will look and feel very similar to ckohler's app because that's where the markup is coming from.

I was once blind, but you have shown me the light. I shall never spread my ignorance regarding the NeoGAF apps ever again.

Here are a few cool apps people can search the Marketplace for. All free.

SpecTrek Light - Augmented Reality ghost hunting game.

TaskPanel - Best Task Manager I have found.

CardioTrainer - Does a bunch of stuff but I just use it for the pedometer.

Bubble - plumb/level

My Tracks - records GPS tracks.

GeoBeagle - Geocaching app. Been using it to set my own waypoints.

DroidTracker - SMS your phone and get the phones location back. Great if my phone gets stolen.

Movies - Showtimes, trailers, reviews.

Listen - Subscribe, download and stream podcast.

Unit Converter - Unit converter.

Finance - stock quotes

Ultimate Stopwatch - Stopwatch and countdown timer.

GPS Status - Does a bunch of stuff but I use it for a compass.

Note Me - Notes.

DockRunner
- Droid ONLY. Turns on the clock/weather/slideshow/music app that is active when attached to the Motorola dock.

USA Today - news, scores and weather. Best weather app I have found.

NetCounter - Traffic counter for EDGE/3G and Wi-Fi.

Ustream Broadcaster
- Stream live video to the web. So cool.

Anyway, Bit-Bit was probably referring to that one.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah. I totally forgot about that. Then by all means, rally for Android then! :p

Haha.

SpotMessage is a communication tool using GPS. Send a message designating a spot with Google Maps then the message will be notified when the recipient arrives at the spot. SpotMsg finds various uses; as an alarm reminding you of a task at a certain spot or for sending your friend a surprise message on his or her arrival.

That's cool.
