I quite like using the HTC browser in the ChocolateEclair release for flash sites, so I think I'll stick with this until the Froyo ROMs improve to the point that flash is enabled.

Does the HTC browser in ChocolateEclair use flash lite or flash 10? I was assuming that flash 10 will never work well on hero/dream/g1/sapphire/mt3g phones because of the limited hardware.

Its probably Flash Lite, but I don't know how it identifies its functionality to websites, because tonnes of sites that I've tried just work. You can double tap any flash applets to make them full screen. Some of the BBC video and audio stuff doesn't work, but most sites do. YouTube and its porn equivalents tend to work! :lol

Anyway, my interest in Foursquare (which sucks, imo) lead me to Gylmpse (Click for AppBrain).

It's a beautiful app that allows you to share your location with anyone, anywhere. No account to sign up for. Share it through email, text, Twitter, Facebook, whatever. Set expiration times. Attach a message. They don't need the app to see the Glympse. It's completely hassle free. It's super simple and really fast. I like it a lot. Just thought I'd pass it along, I've used it for fun and function so far with success.
I agree that the app is well designed and fairly simple to use. I like the notion of check-in with a set time limit.

But I've tried it a few times and it just sucks too much battery each time I use it. Worse than other apps with GPS on.

I know this has been discussed to death but so far I've always used the HTC default messaging app.

Now that both handcent and chompsms have widgets, which is the best to use?

So this may be a stupid question, but with Launcher Pro, how do you add new icons at the quick start bar at the bottom and have them actually open the programs they're associated with. I added one for Talk, click on it and it does nothing. I am assuming it is just showing the icon now and the program itself isn't associated with it.. how do I do that?

long press, popup - select app, popup - select icon

Let's go through what you did.

You should just long press on any one of the five spots on the bottom bar, and a Select Shortcut window pops up. If you select Applications, you should be able to pick Talk...and this has always auto-opened it for me. So if that is what you did, and it's not working, then maybe some bug was introduced in a late release?

Edit: Just tried it, and it works for me. Force restart Launcher Pro, maybe? You can do that in the preference window, near the bottom. Is it just a problem with Talk? Are you using a custom icon (that really shouldn't affect it though...)? You just rooted with NAND access, and so did a full wipe, right? Is Talk (and all of the google apps) on your phone properly, and working on their own?

Android-gaf, help me out. I just wiped my phone (installed new rom). Can I use appbrain to install my apps back to the phone? Last time I tried this, I installed appbrain on the new rom and after it synced I lost my list of apps :lol

your apps should be downloading automatically. in the future i would get titanium backup and backup your apps and system settings.

Yeah I failed at hacking... I had it working before but this time I did something wrong. I didn't think I'd need a back up
You sure they will install automatically? Last time I tried installing the app, they vanished from the site...

they should be downloading on your phone once you start it up. unless there's something different about the rom you're using. everytime i've switched roms they just start downloading from the market. nothing to do with appbrain.

They won't download automatically unless you are going to a Froyo build. Once on Froyo all your apps download when you sign into your Google account for the first time on your handset. Because of this I don't use Titanium Backup anymore. When the dev's start coding in app backup data to go along with this then Titanium backup will effectively be defunct (except for apps not found on the market).

If you aren't on Froyo you'll have to go into the market, look at your downloads and re-download the apps one by one. Time consuming.

As you said, the problem is restoring all the data associated with each app. Not all apps have backup abilities so you might lose something like all your astrid tasks or all your acar data if you don't have the purchased version, etc.

I think that's coming in Gingerbread. So not only will your apps download automatically but all the data will restore too. Which is a brilliant idea*

*Though I think it has to be coded by the app developer to support it.

This happened to me before as well. I made a backup list on appbrain that I was able to use to install all my apps.

Yeah, I know that. That's why I asked about the Appbrain way. It would be great if you could use their website to reinstall stuff..

Ohhh thanks for that!

What program/app are you using to transfer the files remotely? That is pretty awesome.

I have this issue as well. If you do all contacts the widget works fine. If you do family or VIP it doesn't work. I'm guessing he'll fix that in his next update.

Awesome Drop. There are plenty of other browser-based file transfer apps such as Web Sharing (but this is over WiFi), but Awesome Drop is the simplest and works over 3G with no software to install or account to create - only a link to visit.

is beautiful widgets worth it

In my opinion, no. Their major widget is the clock/weather widget, and the rest are just toggle switches you can get elsewhere. I do like the smaller version of the clock widget better than the one in Sense, but the weather portion of the widget has been screwed up (giving wrong information for temperature) for a few months and hasn't been fixed yet.

What's the best app for Android that can backup call history, sms, apps, apps settings, etc without root?

Downloaded LauncherPro last night. Best thing to happen since I bought the phone. Simply amazing.

Does anyone know how to get Flash working in the browser? I'm running stock 2.2 on a Droid.

You have to download the flash app from the Marketplace, though I don't know if it will show up for you.

Anyone use the built in Gtalk app? I get a terrible bug where the other person's most recent msgs show up above what I said. Man it PISSES ME OFF...
Come out already trillian (and please stay connected all the time instead of losing connection like fring or smth)

I use it pretty often with a few different people and have never had problems with it...

are you using the google app?
when making/receiving calls, does the service eat away at your data plan and/or minutes?
and texting as well?

I use the official app.

Still counts against your minutes since Voice isn't VOIP...yet.

Not sure about text since I have unlimited, but you can check your text online and have them forwarded to an email addy then you can reply via email.

Does anyone know where I can find this music widget?

Since Locale is no longer free, I think I should ask: is there anything else as good? Is it worth the $10? It's hard to know without trying it.

Tasker is apparently better than locale, cheaper and has a better average rating. Have installed it but haven't tried to play around with it enough yet to gauge how well it works.

Linky to website

I guess this is an appropriate place for this question.

A friend of mine who owns an HTC Hero with Sprint would, if possible, like me to install a 2.2 rom onto the phone. I don't know a whole lot about Android software or hardware, but i'm "the tech guy" so he wanted me to do it. Anyway, what is the recommended way of rooting a hero, this? http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-root-your-htc-hero-in-one-click/

Second, are there any recent, stable 2.2 roms for the hero even? All I can seem to find is a release from May that was missing a great deal of functionality.

Finally figured it out. Terrible coding from google. The time stamps are no server based, but based on the two parties talking. My clock was 30s ahead, cause the mess of messages :lol

I need a calendar app that I can set an alarm to about a hour or 30 min before a scheduled event. I tired suing one that came with my Droid, but all it does is blink the tiny msg light and have the icon in corner when I turn phone screen on.

Recommendations?
