So I noticed with my Galaxy S when I plug it into the AUX jack in my car a voice will speak out the song title and artist when I start playing music. Seems to only do this for the first song.. I cant find a setting for this feature, or even knew it existed LOL! Anyone else have this?

On a side note, goddamn I love this phone, its a fucking joy to use. There is the odd stutter here and there but it does not bother me. People at work are just in awe when I show them the screen. I have already potentially swayed two people who were getting Iphone 4s to get a Galaxy S. :lol
Hold down the volume key in the middle, activates text to speech. Also works in stock messenger too.

Not in aldiko book reader though..... was hoping I'd get free audio books :D

So I finally decided to go for LauncherPro Plus for the widget support and general acknowledgement of Fred's amazing work. The calendar isn't as pretty as the stock one, but the widget is infinitely more useful. I'm really happy with it.

The people widget, though, is an issue. It definitely is linking to FB and other information when I click on a contact, but it is not loading pictures of anyone. Does anybody have a clue why that could be? And I haven't fiddled around with the bookmarks and I probably won't too much because I have a browser icon setup on the dock for Dolphin HD.
.

It won't pull in FB pictures. It will use pictures set from the phone. Not sure about GMail pictures but I think it does those.

If you visit the forum, it's a known "issue" but he says he can't access FB pictures so it'll stay that way. They link an app on the forum that syncs FB pictures in a different method than the FB app and the People widget can read those.

http://mashable.com/2010/08/12/tweetdeck-for-android/

It integrates Facebook (Facebook), Twitter (Twitter), Buzz and Foursquare (Foursquare) accounts into a single application. Updates are color-coded and presented in a single, blended column. There’s also a “Me” column for reviewing all your Twitter @replies and comments and like for your Facebook posts.

To give you an idea of what the app will look like, here are the signin and Home screens:

tweetdeck-android-home.jpg

tweetdeck-android-twitter.jpg

And we’ve got to hand it to the developers and designers at TweetDeck (TweetDeck) for giving Android users even more fun and useful features than are currently available on the iPhone version of TweetDeck, which doesn’t yet support Foursquare or Buzz. But this Android app is a clear signal of where the company’s Apple-focused applications will be headed.

Nice. These apps are starting to have similar look and feel Twitter, the New Facebook and this look really polished.

Also Facebook had an update this morning...seems to be running very snappy now.

Tweetdeck is on Android..... Sweeeeeet! I used to use the desktop version a lot when I was into my tweeting, but its a pretty decent program in itself. Will definitely check it out.

Still redirecting to the browser for things that can be seen inside the app, and links still don't properly work (leading you to a profile instead of a certain status update). I think the only reason it works better is because they stripped out the contact sync feature :lol

What? I have the contact sync feature on Version 1.3.2

Ah... Thanks!

Not showing for me since I updated this morning.

Edit: double-checked and now that option is part of the Data Sync area of the main settings menu instead of an option inside the app. Not that I use it anyway, I'd rather use the pics I like best for the contacts and none of mine have the correct phone/mail info in their profiles.

No, within the app in the settings menu I see contact sync options. Is possible that if you are using something like Sense it hides the options within the app. But on my Nexus (Froyo) those options are still part of the application.

I'm on stock 2.1 (Samsung Spica) so maybe that's the reason.

its always been there, and the facebook setting would just set that.

So, when's this press thing started?
I can't find a time anywhere online...weird

These things are usually around 10am, PST. Most of the time they're midmorning.

Edit: Gizmodo says the last time they got an invite like this to see new mobile services, it was for turn-by-turn navigation. So, something fairly significant could be in the works.

I wouldn't stay up for this. Its not gonna be anything super important. Maybe video chat..

it looks like at least one of the things they will talk about is the market.. though that doesn't excite me as much as it did before i realised appbrain has already delivered the OTA market downloads.. though it could be something entirely different

wasn't sure where to post this, since it kind of relates to both hardware and software fragmentation, but here we go

http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...device-market-cap-ios-fragmentation-and-more/

Android Hardware and Software fragmentation (also iOSs)

I found this snippet interesting
However, undoubtedly the most interesting (and likely to be the most controversial) part of the report is that iOS fragmentation is bad. Considering how much of a stink the world made over Android fragmentation a few months ago, it’s funny that the iOS numbers went unnoticed.

though my personal take on it is that the OS jumps aren't as big with all those different versions of iOS, so it isn't as big of a deal.. as android has made some pretty big leaps since 1.5

Other tables and pie charts at the link above

eh, you can collapse the ios ones into 3 and 4. Counting the bug fixes is really quite silly (and made more sense when i saw the site it was coming from). 1.5 and 1.6 (1.5 big time) are the issues in android. At this point they should just drop 1.5 off as they don't really exist as far as apps go.

This is kind of silly, as the sub-point releases are minor bug fixes (which doesn't affect minimum requirements for apps in the store) and 3.2 is limited to the iPad. 4.0 was just released in late June as well I believe.

http://www.androidguys.com/2010/08/12/analysis-android-trojan/

Again, not a whole lot to it. Since these are Russian SMS short codes, any non-Russian phones probably won’t be able to SMS that premium shortcode and therefore won’t incur the toll charges. It’s important to note that the application has no viral spreading capabilities nor command and control functionality. It simply relies on users being tricked into downloading, installing, and running the fake movie player application.

So, you need to be russian, you need to download it from a non market source, you need to have allowed third party apps to install, and you need to allow something to send sms messages.

as an Android newbie, what are the chances of the "android pads" coming out this year being as nice as the ipad? I'd really like one, but I'm avoiding the ipad for various reasons not worth going into. My hope is that there will be an android one just as slick and that the marketplace will be pretty good by then (It's be nice to have Plants v Zombies and Chaos Rings on there as well).

As far as the apps go, I think android is starting to deliver the good games slowly, but whether it'll be quite as good as the app store by the end of the year is hard to say

As far as hardware goes, I have yet to see anything with as sleek a design (EDIT: just noticed you may not have meant design - I'm sure by the end of they year we'll see something hardware-wise that compares to the iPad) as the iPad running android, though there hasn't really been much shown in the way of hardware

the new dell tablet has a chance, the samsung tablet also has a chance, but nothing has really come out yet.

Someone should start and Android Homepage(s) and OS customization thread.
Stuff like this is great but it gets drowned in the sea of Apps.

Andrex, do it! :D

Yeah I was more meaning software wise, I played around with the Archos 5 recently and it's clearly not in the same league, but the samsung one looks more like it. I read there should be some sort of android store news coming soon so maybe they'll get their act together :)

Also something that would be fantastic.... Steam!

This is pretty much all Software though. In the next OP, I'll build in better themes support. :P

Dumb question, are these text dock icons installed manually or via an app?

android is going get a rocket strapped to its back when x86 versions start coming out.
I could see a steam like thing jumping on then.

really thinking about getting an all in one touch monitor/pc and running gingerbread on it when it comes out for my kitchen.

Get Launcher Pro
hold your finger on the icon
changed icon with menu,

you have to manually find the files for each icon.

Ok I was hoping it was that easy. I've got it working but those text icons are tiny!

I guess no site is live blogging this Android press conference?

i know, it'll probably be a disappointment, but I can't help but get hyped for any type of press conference.

So it's Voice Actions as part of Voice Search - dictate texts, more commands, combines steps (looking up a place and then phoning, do it with one command).

Also it sounds like we might hear about Chrome To Phone. Which is nice as I like it, but not interesting as... well, it's already out. :/
If only they redid Marketplace website taking advantage of Chrome to Phone.
