first gingerbread notes from a "source"... choose to believe if you want.

- Redesigned Youtube with leanback features
- slate gray notification bar
- more "android green"
- apps built to appear integrated into OS
- video chat through gtalk
- wifi and 3g calling direct through google voice, will be built into voice, mobile features only available using gingerbread)
- a lot of small enhancements (radio buttons and check boxes, etc), cleaner
- rumored hardware acceleration for UI to make it smoother

end of 2010 but possible early 2011
goodbye voice plan!

I'm assuming that the guy who developed the UI for webOS has not had time to do anything for Android?
Because changing the color of the notification bar and making the icons look more uniform is far from a "complete UI overhaul".

I love the big G, but they sure need to take a page out of Apple, Microsoft, Palm on good UI design.

i think working on getting the UI an identity is a good start... honeycomb should be out early next year as well for full tablet support... so it could be implemented in stages.

My Hero has been hampered by the new firmware. For example when I press call on my Widget, nothing happens on the screen for 3 seconds. When I get a new SMS, the icon on the Text Message widget makes it look unread for a good 5 seconds even though I already read it.

I dont want to change phones because I love the 'chin' design of the Hero. Frankly I'm saddened HTC didn't release a new model like that.

Gingaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! Sounds like an actual update people can dig into if true.

So what are the chances manufacturers will actually keep the WiFi and 3G calling when they finally get around to updating phones to Gingerbread? I know my Nexus One will be sitting pretty but I can't imagine service providers being too happy about this.

haha yea, definitely.

I'm already on Verizon's $34.99 300 minute plan though, can't go any lower or I would.
call customer service. they have a plan called Nationwide Loyalty 50 for $15/month. its not advertised so you'll have to call them.

Loyalty emphasized. I just signed up as a Verizon customer like two weeks ago. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't give this to me yet.

Loyalty 50? Is this implying 50 minutes for $15 a month? Is that supposed to be good or something?

If Google offers 3G calling through their Android Google Voice app, you won't have to use ANY carrier minutes and thus could get the cheapest voice plan available.

That's what we were discussing.

as far as hardware acceleration, using an android phone and then using an iphone you notice a much more general smoothness in the iphone... anything to recreate that feel would be beneficial.

But Android already supports a hardware accelerated UI, even on 2.1. Most phones just don't use it.

Well then most phones should get on board if it would help. Thanks for the info

Ah I see. I didn't realize the overall context. Makes more sense, then...

yeah, 50 implies 50 minutes. if the rumours are true about the next updated google voice app, that means you'll never burn any of your minutes.
heck, im in the lowest plan now, and i make/receive calls via 3g/wifi and i dont burn a single minute in my plan.

They allow skype and google voice is a market app so it isn't something they can block on a stock build.

2 questions, is there a way to remove the stupid sprint bloat apps without rooting, and second, I have a contacts widget in the htc sense ui up, but it only draws from facebook for the pictures and not my google contacts, when I change it, it changes but it goes back to the facebook one -_-

Any ideas how to fix this stuff?

If you get a uninstaller I'm pretty sure you can uninstall sprint nfl, tv, and nascar if I'm not mistaken.

EDIT:unsure on the 2nd question as I dont really use pics unless it happened automatically via fb.

Does anyone know why using the new updated voice search to say "call Mike Smith" doesn't prompt the phone to search through the contacts for Mike Smith but rather to do a Google search for "call Mike Smith"? I thought the new voice search was supposed to work that way. What's the version number for the new voice search app?

Ok, I dont know further (and I'm sorry that i keep spamming this thread with noobish questions):

I tried to use the rom manager with the clockworkmod recovery. I can't restart into recovery mode, or get into recovery mode at all (stuck at vodafone screen), and i cant boot the normal way, have to go through that "volume down" and "energy" fastbood menu thing.

when trying to download a working recovery image through that programm, it wont work. or if i try to download the whole rom again, just with activating "google apps", it loads and loads and eventually promts a "broken zip" message.
so right now, i can use the phone and stuff, but not connect to google (so i lost all my numbers, until i can connect to it)

So I cant install a new recovery image through that rom manager, cant boot normally and cant get to recovery mode at all.

Well there are about 100 apps called uninstaller on the marketplace apparently, not sure which to use. I'd like to uninstall shit like nfl, nascar, stocks, etc, or at least make it so they don't start upon booting, is there a way to disable them as processes forever unless *I* click them to use them? I don't give a shit about footprints -_-

what does "hardware accelerated UI" mean? And I take it us lowly Droid 1 owners aren't getting anything past froyo? Fuck this shit.

Also, I think I've asked this before, but what are the best "find my care" or just general "mark this spot on a map" apps that aren't Carr Matey? That fucking app always has troubles getting a GPS fix, even when I switch right over to Google Maps and it's connected just fine?

Although that brings up another question-- why the hell does google maps on my droid sometimes have trouble getting a decent GPS fix? Often times I'll open up google maps and click "find my location" and it just doesn't manage to get a fix with a radius wider than like 3000 feet or some shit. I sometimes have to end up restarting my phone, and then magically it starts working.

It's means using phones' graphical processing units to processes graphics. All the UI stuff is done on the CPU, which is partly why some elements are choppy and battery life isn't as good as it could be.

Does anyone know some good like ambient sound apps? With my Droid 2 and the dock I'm going to replace my clock that has sounds like rain, thunderstorms, and stuff that I use to fall asleep.

Sounds like an issue with your GPS or that you don't have your GPS enabled and that it's trying to get a fix on your signal via the cell phone towers. Or that the GPS in the Droid just sucks. Don't have any issues on my EVO with the GPS.

In short:

How do I repair my recovery image. Cant boot up tp that, or normally, just via fastboot.
The rom manager from the clockwork recovery image does not help, it just promts some error messages

This x100

Anyone have a solution other than resorting to using vlingo?

newer version avail?

For some reason I can't download/update apps from the market anymore :(

I just an "unsuccessful" warming with a "please try again". It's been like this for day, and doesn't work on any wifi network, or edge or 3g, and restarting the phone didn't help!

What is this? Anyone had similar issues?

when i do "update all" it never works so I have to download them one by one.

I had that last week on my nexus one. It's still not fully remedied (only downloads/updates over 3g, not wifi) but what I had to do was go into applications and select the clear data option from several apps and then rebooted.

The apps/programs I did it for were:

Download manager
a few of the different google service/processes
Market (also cleared cache)
Talk

and there may have been a few others. A real fucking pain in the arse and I still have no idea what caused it. Many people online have suffered the same thing.

Happens to me sometimes. I just try again and it usually works. Sometimes it doesn't work if I have it stored on the SD card, so I move it back to the phone then update.

I just saw that, no luck installing it while on cyanogen rom though, even after uninstalling the old version with titanium backup
Worked for me using titanium after rebooting (failed before rebooting)
