I think I used that over Thanksgiving break. Worked a lot better than I expected.

I still have the old market :(

you need to download wireless tether. It's a free app and it makes your phone into a router.

No you do NOT need to download a whole new ROM image.

You make it sound like flashing a ROM is hard. I flash the nightlies for my Nexus One almost every night.

So how does the new Market get updated on your phone? To you get a pop-up telling you that you have an update or does it just magically change one day?

Is it just me or did the recent update for the Moto Droid make the stock browser all funky? It's impossible to get a proper text size on a lot pages now.

Not sure if it's been posted yet but there is a free cps1/cps2/neogeo emulator on the market called Tiger Arcade.

I’m sure this has been asked a thousand times and for that I’m sorry, but is there a Neogaf app or one in the pipe?

GAF, i seek halp.

In a week or two i will have opportunity to purchase 10" android tablet [my first android device] and i have a question about its 2.1 OS:

Can i play youtube videos on it? It haz dedicated gpu, plays 720p h264 without any problems but offcourse it lacks flash support. Will m.youtube.com work with it fine? I am convinced that domain does not use flash for playing videos, it just provide links to streaming 3gp/mp4 files.

It has nothing to do with the ease or difficulty of flashing a ROM. His exact question is:
Do I have to download a whole new ROM image for the phone to get this simple option?
and the answer is no, it is not necessary to flash a ROM.

But I do have a question for you James,

is there a simple way of keeping settings and apps when flashing to a different ROM? or do I need to use Titanium Backup?

Going to flash to CyanogenMod but last time I did that, I couldn't find a simple way of keeping everything without having to redownload my apps.

I thought I saw an article about an update to voice capability in Android that would adapt to its users voice. Said it would be releasing today, but I don't see anything about it.

I just checked the market and there's an update for the Voice Search app, and it says "recent changes: Peronsalized recognition: enable this feature to improve speech recognition accuracy"

I haven't tried it yet though. I don't use the voice stuff all the time, but I've never had a problem with it's accuracy.

Facebook update! Now with Chat and PUSH notifications. :D

facebook-15-11.jpg

Edit.

I still see interval settings...no PUSH AFAIK.

Edit.

Push is working. Interval settings are supposedly for the widget. I set those settings to "never"and I'm getting all kinds of notifications.

facebook never worked for me. It always closes what ever page i am in and goes to the last one. Extremly annyoing if you write something and suddenly the page closes. How cant we still have a good facebook app? Its ridicules.

Anandtech Nexus S/Gingerbread Review

Gingerbread brings some GPU acceleration to task as well. Although not everything is hardware accelerated, almost all animations are, and there’s a definite difference in feel as a result. Things like the application launcher cube and the corresponding fade-in, fade-out which always felt like they chugged along on the Nexus One are way sped up. Not everything is perfect, however. Scrolling in most lists still sends the CPU to 100%, and the browser still doesn’t feel as smooth as it should, but the UI in Gingerbread does feel faster.

Pushing and chat work. There's no setting for push. Tested.

The interval settings are just for the app. Even with it set to never, the widget was always updating. It the interval setting for Twitter affects the Twitter widget though.

I just updated the Voice Search but I can't seem to find the setting for Personalised Recognition, anyone know how to switch it on? I'm running a 2.2 Desire.

I just ran Voice Search from the app drawer and it asked me if I wanted to turn it on.

CyanogenMod 7 (Gingerbread) rolling out Mid-January:

Google officially released Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS, but according to the habit of Android phones, most models now can not get the support of the official upgrade, even if there is the upgrade, a period of time have to be waited. Don't worry! CyanogenMod, one of the most famous team in the third-party of Android ROM, announces that CyanogenMod 7 for Android 2.3 Gingerbread will be release in Mid-January 2011.

CyanogenMod have brought the system update of Android 2.2 version to more than ten Android phones. These phones are currently run CM 6.1 ROM on Android 2.2.1. After the optimized, the CM 6.1.0 stable version for the various models has been released. In later work, the team work will also be extended to support more models and languages.

Currently, Android 2.3 Gingerbread system's SDK has been released, but the customized version firmware have to be wait for some time, especially the available versions of CM series. It is expected that the various models of CM 7 test ROM will start to appear in mid-January 2011.

From the features of Android 2.3 upgrade point of view, the main change is in the details section, so the models which have been supported by CM 6.1.0 now are expected to get the system upgrade of 2.3 version.

Only a month for CM7? CM6 took longer than that, iirc.

My guess would be that, Froyo caused many phones to get abandoned and so was the one which instilled the most enthusiasm for vanilla/modified ROMs. Once CM was stable they started adding the awesome stuff. Odds are quite high people are now much more used to the android OS code and the amount of people working on it has increased drastically and so releases in the future will take less and less time.

Which is awesome.

I'll hope in vain to see Froyo come properly to the Hero but I doubt we'll ever see it, Hero owners always seem to get shafted badly :(

OmniGamer said:
Yeah tell me about it :-(

Yeah, I agree that it's really never gonna happen. But strictly speaking there is no reason to worry because rooting is (was?) incredibly easy and installing a custom rom such as froydvillain or floyo (both on XDA, both updated to CM 6.1) has been amazing. I get awesome performance and with LauncherPro widgets and others such as FancyWidgets and the like I don't even miss HTC sense the slightest. And there are themes to make it look like gingerbread! YAY!

:'( Poor hero - he has served me so well

Assessing which devices will get Gingerbread in the coming months :lol

Enjoy Gingerbread while I move onto Honeycomb, suckers!

Is there a media player in the market that plays the usual codecs (divx, etc)? I'm getting tired of converting video to a different format before I put it on my phone.

VPlayer or Rockplayer play everything

VPlayer was nice til the last update fucked up the accessing of the seekbar menu in play and adjusts luminosity and volume first.
