Here my question, why does she care so much about the avatars and not care about the women making the games or presenting them?
You would think that a woman with a great job, like Kiki Wolfkill would be more important then the character presented on screen, during gameplay.
Because if you focus on the women making and presenting the games then companies have an easy way out.
Say you want to run a new game company and you are bringing in 200 employees at all levels.
However when you do interviews 85% of the applicants are males and some of those are REALLY fecking talented.
So, you do bring in a few really talented women too but they are naturally going to be a smaller % of the workforce.
The simple fact is that more men are training for this job and more men are passionate about these kind of roles.
These facts allow you shift the responsibility away from the gaming company and onto whoever is educating and training the workforce.
You can basically say "no way Anita it's society's fault for not encouraging gilrs to take up game development we can only pick from the existing workforce".
I am pretty sure that she never ever did a video celebrating the awesome female game devs in the industry. Not her shitty friends making shitty progressive indies but the actual women involved in some of the biggest games ever? Even though something like that might inspire young women to take an interest.
The goal is to put the game companies in a position that they cannot wriggle out of.
The starting point is "Society is in a bad way, women are treated poorly".
The cause is "Women are not well represented in media".
The solution is "Represent women more often and in the way that I tell you".
NOW she can offer her services as a "consultant" or an "expert" or maybe your game will get a wee bit of backlash on Twitter?
Hell maybe your game will appear on a future YouTube video and when people defend it you will just be "supported by GamerGate".
Changing the avatars is also an immediate and measurable demonstration and/or confirmation of her power to make change.
This, in turn, will encourage other activists.
So maybe EA runs a trailer for a new Star Wars game and what's this? The main character is a white male? A little bit of backlash might see EA "doing better" in their DLC or even the next Star Wars game. Could be they need the help of some kind of consultant to make sure there is no future issues.
It's also just as easy concept for dummies to understand. Also easily digestible for people who don't really know much about gaming.
"80% of games are led by male characters, what abut video games for women?"
It's easily understandable even if it's not very deep.
Convince people that this situation is actively bad for society and bad for women and you might be onto something.
Personally, I respect Anita's "hustle".
She obviously studied some useless fucking course and college but managed to leverage that into something very profitable and successful.
Sure, she took advantage of gullible people but the videogame sphere is already full of that in so many aspects.
She doesn't exactly lie about gaming but she frames things in a very specific way that is appealing to white knights inside the gaming community and quick and easy to understand for people who don't know gaming at all.
The people I do not respect here are those who allowed her shitty views to go unchallenged.
Outlets who game her content airtime without scrutiny or any kind of objection.
Then, even worse, they went out of their way to attack people who criticized her work.
That's on them.
The whole shitshow, Anita, her critics, YouTube, GamerGate etc is on those people who raised her up without question.
FFS Sargon of Akkad ended up running as a politician ultimately because way back then nobody in the mainstream said "yeah he talks some sense actually a lot of her views are bullshit". If they had done that it would have been the end of it.
Instead they lied about her detractors but it was all so transparent that it ended up raising them up too. Total idiocy.
As someone else said already, there was a time where probably even this post right here would have gotten me banned from this site.
If the thread hadn't already been shut down. Probably this would be a perma-ban on the other place.
Don't think I said anything too controversial or shocking though.
