Alright GAF! 1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

1. I am right now ! It wasn't part of my plan when I was younger, but you know, one day you wake up and you feel like you're missing something in your life and then you decide to drop school to actually learn game dev as a passion.

2. Definitely long term, contract maybe but only if I can get a stable situation out of it.

3. AAA for sure, I've done a lot of small projects and most of them where simply frustrating because you can't get the most out of it (no time, no money, not enough people, ...). For sure you can't simply do everything in a AAA game but a lot more can be achieved.

4. Well, same than above, large scale projects, especially over the course of many years because creative job requires a lot of time and iteration. I also like every part of the life of a project, from the first idea to the final polished gem.

5. Most likely a publisher, being independant seems like a lot of cool freedom but sometimes, freedom isn't so cool and you're at your best when you try to make something out of constraints. Publishers have many many advantages to offer, the only case where I would prefer to remain independant is if the contract is too one-sided.

1. Yes, but nothing serious.

2. Long Term/Permanent.

3. Small/indie

4. Several different projects

5. Self publishing, but I won't say no to publishers.

1. Yes but not currently. Briefly I did work in Q&A at Microprose back in the 90s.

2. Permanent employment mostly because of the US health care industry is tied to your work.

3. If my health wasn't an issue I would like to work for a small studio.

4. Several small projects

5. Rather self publish on steam

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

I was a game developer as of two years ago. It was a good bit of fun, but the relative instability of the industry and my growing family pushed me into more stable employment.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Given the answer above, I'm only interested in long term/permanent employment.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

I've now done both AA and indie studios, and I prefer the AAA experience. It's more exciting and the opportunities are bigger. What I disliked about indie shops is that there is no guarantee that your work gets released and too many sacrifices have to be made.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

It really depends on the project, but generally, one large project is my preference. I like my work to be like my play--lots to sink my teeth into and explore.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Depends on the publisher, but generally, I'd prefer to work in a company that self-publishes. You get more creative and business control, and the team takes more ownership of the product and their work.

Thanks for doing this, it's an interesting way to collect data.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

- I at one point my life considered dabbling in Unity but soon realized I was not cut out for it.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

- I prefer long term/permanent employment

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

- Indie Studio

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

- One large project

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

- Publisher partnership

1. Kinda of a game developer. I work with Unity but for "serious games" and simulations, not to actually make games.

2. Long term

3. I don't have a preference in this.

4. One single project.

5. A company that self-publishes but I don't really mind this.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

No.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Long Term.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Large studio.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

Several smaller projects.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Self publish, ideally.

Thanks :)

Alright GAF! Here’s how it works: You can win a game of your choice, valued up to $60 USD. All you have to do is answer the five questions below and post your reply in this thread. All questions are in the yes/no or either/or formats, so answering them shouldn’t take long at all. My thought for this was that it should take less time than the “draw me an MS paint picture of…” competitions that have been on GAF before. Ideally, your answers should be concise and clearly indicate one side or the other (or neutral.) If you go into detail in such a way that makes it unclear which side of the fence you are on, I will mark it as neutral, but you will still be entered in the drawing as long as you answer each question.

If fewer than 50 people enter, I will choose one winner. If more than 50 people enter, I will choose two winners. I will put each entrant into a spreadsheet, and pull winning numbers from their cell assignment within that spreadsheet. As such, your entry number will not correspond to your post number in the thread. I can upload a short video of picking the random winners, showing the spreadsheet, so that you can be sure everything is on the level. I will be using random.org to pick the winning numbers.

The prizes can be distributed on the platform of your choice. If you are on PC, I will simply gift the game of your choice to you. If you are on Xbox or PlayStation, I will buy a digital gift card for $60 USD and give you the code. If you are on Nintendo platforms, I will buy a $50 and a $10 gift card and give both to you.

Unfortunately, this is currently open only to U.S. residents. (See edit below for more) I really wanted to do this internationally, but from the searching that I’ve done, both on GAF and the rest of the Internet, it appears that codes are region specific. If anyone can correct me on this or provide an easy solution, I would be happy to open this up internationally.

How long this runs is going to depend a lot on how quickly people enter. Ideally, I’d like to close it Monday, November 9th at noon PST (GMT -8.) Because I have to enter the data myself, I may have to close it earlier than that if there are just too many entries. Alternatively, if too few people enter, I may leave it open until Wednesday the 11th at the same time.

I'm doing all of this as part of a research project for a technical writing course. Your answers will be anonymous - I'll only use your username to distribute the prizes. In case anyone is wondering, I did run this idea by a mod before making this thread.

With all of that out of the way, here are the questions!

Edit: If you are confident that I can get a code / gift to you legally and easily (such as gifting on Steam internationally) feel free to enter. I am not limiting this to U.S. for analysis purposes, only to make sure that whoever enters and wins is able to get their prize without using VPNs or third-party key sellers. If you're confident that region restrictions won't hinder you from getting your prize from a U.S. resident, you are more than welcome to enter.

Edit 2: This is going a lot better than I imagined. As such, I'm going to close this drawing after the first 1000 entries or Monday the 9th at Noon PST, whichever comes first. This will help keep the odds of winning from being too microscopic, and will also ensure that I'm not spending the next 6 weeks compiling this data :)

1. No

2. long term employment

3. no preference

4. one large project

5. publisher partner

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

1. If the visual development part of the dev team counts (art), then yes I have considered.

2. Long term

3. Large

4. One large project but okay with several smaller projects

5. Either way

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
NO, I just like to play

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Permanent, I like a safety net

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Don't work in game industry

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
Small Projects, my attention span is small.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
Self publish, all the great developers usually self publish.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
No:

I am currently not a game developer but I have considered trying my hand at visual novel type games.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Permanent.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Small/Indie:

I feel like I'd be able to bring out more creativity here.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

One large product.

I like having my mind focused on one thing instead of several different things at a time.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Either.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Yes, considered.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Permanent.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Indie.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

Several different projects.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Publisher.

Hey, thanks for the shot at a prize.

1. Yes to considered, not one currently.
2. Permanent employment.
3. Definitely the small or indie studio.
4. One large project over the several years.
5. Preference for self-publishing.

1. Yes and I'm working on a small solo project at the moment.

2. Long term/permanent.

3. Indie.

4. Several small projects.

5. Self-published.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

The school I went to does have a game design program, and I considered going into it, but I decided it would be easier to go with what I knew: graphic design. For some reason I thought you'd have to be good at math/logic/coding to study game design, and my brain doesn't do that shit. Still not sure if that's really true or not.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

I'm in the former category as a designer now, but I'm actually getting restless and will probably look for a more long term position soon.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

I think there'd be benefits to both. I think I'd like to go the Ryan Payton route: get to work with your hero on crazy big budget shit for a couple years, then start something small.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

My brain would probably be better suited to multiple projects, but it'd be fun to work on something big.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Depends on the partner, but I think self-publishing offer a lot of creative benefits that I'd like to have.

1 - Have considered, but only as a head designer / director. The one calling the shots.

2 - Long term

3 - Medium / indie, although most of my game ideas would probably require a AAA budget or close to it.

4 - Large project

5 - Has a publisher, at least for physical distribution on consoles.

1. I've thought about it briefly

2. Prefer long-term, permanent employment

3. Small indie studio

4. Several smaller projects

5. Self-publish

Thanks for doing this! So cool.

1. Thought about it yes, not seriously enough to take it further than thinking it's the type of job I'd enjoy doing.

2. Permanent simply for the security of a monthly pay cheque, however I've done temporary work in the past and enjoyed working towards a date when I knew I would be able to have time off from working to do other things.

3. Small studio, I've always found working in smaller teams in other jobs much more relaxing and laid back which comes from knowing the people you're working with much closer than when you have a large team which makes it harder to communicate with everyone all the time.

4. Depends on the project but a long term project is more appealing to me since I like to constantly improve on things and see them evolving all the time.

5. Not informed on the advantages or disadvantages of either, but the idea of self publishing seems like the more interesting choice, to reach a larger audience I imagine having a bigger publisher on side would be better though and in the end it's all about wanting people to play the stuff you're creating.

1. I have often dreamed about it.

2. If part of a successful company, long term.

3. Depends on the talent of the team and the freedom we are given.

4. Probably one or two smaller projects and one major one.

5. Depends on which option is more lucrative/opportunistic.

4)Large project

5) No preference.

1. No.
2. Long-term. Stability is good.
3. I'd prefer a small studio.
4. One project. Dividing your focus only makes everything worse than it could be.
5. Self-publish, I guess.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
Not seriously, no

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Long Term/Permanent has some protections that are preferable

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
AAA studios, though certain ones (Valve) are better than others from what I gather

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
One large project to focus design.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Alright GAF!

With all of that out of the way, here are the questions!

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer? YES

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment? PERMANENT

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio? SMALL INDIE STUDIO

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time? SEVERAL

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games? SELF PUBLISH

Thanks!

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

No. Not at any point.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

All about that long term employment.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

I think I'd like to work on a small indie studio moreso than the crunch rush of AAA studios.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

One large project.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Partnerships ala Platinum Games.

1. I have considered being a game developer.

2. I prefer long-term/permanent employment.

3. Small/indie studio

4. One large project

5. Self-publishing

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Yes, I'm a GD in training; currently attending Oakland Community College, and so far it's a challenge, but fun seeing results. Hope to graduate in 2017.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Contract. There will always be a greener pasture. If it works out, and the opportunities are bountiful, I'll sign again - assuming I get that option.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

AAA, simply because the knowledge gained is priceless. You never know, in the future I could work for, or start an indie studio of my own, and possibly apply some of that experience.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

One large project. I'm a stickler for detail, so I'd more than likely gravitate towards a project that could take a few years. Of course this would give me ample time to mess up, and get things just right.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

I think things work great when companies self-publish - especially for the developers. Often times publishers need to change things (marketing/timing) and developers need to adjust accordingly. However, I'd like to think that morale at the self-publisher would be slightly higher than the partnerships.

Self-publishers just seems more 'in-house'.

1. (yes, concidered) I considered it throughout college. I graduated with a degree that required a few programming classes. (C, VB, Java, HTML)

2. (perm) I've worked as a independent contractor, and permanent as my job in IT. Contract sucks. US Tax code is like 30% toward "independent contractors", though you do get the benefit of being able to deduct expenses which is nice. In the end it sucks paying your own taxes that the business ordinarily would. Also now that health is mandatory that also raises your expenses. Permanent workers generally have most (in many cases all) of these covered depending on whether you are hourly or salaried. (In that regard hourly is almost always preferred as many companies abuse the lack of overtime for salaried workers)

3. (Indie) Indie studios are the way to go. While you are not guaranteed pay in the same way larger AAA's would, at least you have more say/influence/ability to fulfill your vision of what/how the game should be. AAA forces their vision of your idea...

4. (Several Smaller) Would depend on the project, and the role you play in it. As an Indie you will likely be only working on one project, however various people (depending on the job they do) could easily be working on multiple projects and ideas. I think multiple projects would be more interesting, but even working on the same project you can constantly be working on it coming from different angles, with different ideas. (There is not always 1 way to solve 1 problem)

5. (Self) Self published. While you won't get as much advertising/publicity, in this day and age you don't necessarily need it. Publishers at this point are doing more damage (in many cases) than they are helping. I'm a firm believing in outside influences ruining games in some cases.

1. Yes Edit: no to the second part, at least not in the paid sense because I do plenty of related things personally.
2. Long term / Permanent
3. Indie
4. Several small projects (I know from experience you tend to learn more faster and get a better range of feedback doing smaller and more varied designs than in doing one bloated one)
5. Self-Published

1. Yes, I have considered it. But then realized that programming is totally not my thing.
2. I prefer long term / permanent employment.
3. Indie Studio.
4. One large project over several years.
5. Self published.

1. Yeah, especially when I was younger. Never amounted to anything though.

2. Permanent

3. AAA

4. Several different projects

5. Self published

Thanks for your contest!

1. Why, yes.

2. I prefer long term/permanent.

3. Definitely a small indie studio.

4. Several projects at the same time. I'm actually doing this right now. While you can say it hurts the overall pacing of all my projects, it helps me keep my sanity and motivation.

5. Self-publish all the way, baby!

1. Yes, at times.

2. I like Long term employment. Stability makes me happy.

3. Small studio, which ironically would clash with #2. But I like closer-knit teams.

4. Several different projects. More to learn.

5. No strong opinion, but i'd say self-publish. Could go either way though.
