2. I have a daughter, and prefer permanence, so I want long-term employment.

3. I suppose that I would prefer to work at a smaller developer (WayForward, Double Fine, etc.)

4. Several smaller projects sounds preferable as to keep things interesting.

5. I would prefer working orn a company that self-publishes; too many cooks spoil the pot.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
1. Yes; I have a great desire to become a game developer. In fact, I'm currently pursuing a Computer Science major for that very purpose.

2. I've only ever truly been employed once, but in general I prefer long-term/permanent employment. Its nice to have that peace of mind that you have a job and will be keeping it, thus having a constant source of income.

3. I would prefer to work at a large/AAA studio. Ideally, said studio would be my own company, but even if its not I'd much prefer to work at a large/AAA studio.

4. I would prefer to work on several different projects over the same course of time. This would prevent any boredom and keep new ideas flowing.

5. I would prefer to work for a company that self-publishes game, although I would not be adverse to the idea of working for a company that partners up with publishers. Still, the preference is towards self-publishing, as that signifies that the company has enough money to hold itself up and also has more control and power over its titles.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Yes. Realized my passion is for writing stories and game design more than actually programming. Hoping to make something of it one day.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Stable employment wins unless its in a part time scenario.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

I do work in the video game industry, however I work at none of these things. Out of the two, I'd prefer building a smaller studio that eventually becomes a bigger one through good products and hard work (no matter how truly unrealistic this is)

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

Depends. I think it is entirely okay to have different things gestating at times. However, once you settle on the best idea and put it into production, you have to hone in and make that thing the best it can be. Should clarify, sometimes its okay to work on a "side thing" with say 2 hours of the work week (40 hours) just to relieve some stress, and because sometimes working in a different environment gives you great ideas for the main project.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Again, I do work in the game industry. However, this question is also a "it depends" simply because, it depends on which publisher you partner with, their expectations, the freedom they give you and what your ultimate goals are. I think ideally an older Blizzard (WC2 until WoW) situation works best, where you are big enough you can do your own projects, but also do things with your own established IPs. Yet, you also have the stability and backing of a publisher. I can see the positives in both cases though and it depends on the job role, but if I were high up in either? I'd want to be at one that has a publisher.

1. Yes. Didn't like working with the tools though.
2. Contract work so I can move from project to project.
3. Smaller studio where my personal contributions are more important.
4. Several different projects is almost always preferable.
5. A company self-publishing games would relate to the space I'm more interested in.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

I considered it as much as a child can grasp the concept of game development. I am not currently one.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Permanent Employment

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Large/Studio

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

One Large Project

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Self-Publishes Games

1. yes and nope :( I would really love to be one though, just too lazy to learn whats necessary :/

2. long term all the way

3. Small indie studio, I know this kind of is in contrast to my second answer, but maybe what you want isn't what you need ;)

4. One large project

5. Self publishers, I think the job security is better in that regard, this speaks bounds of our beloved industry though :(

1. No.

2. I prefer long term employment.

3. I would prefer to work for a large studio.

4. I would prefer to work on several different projects.

5. I would prefer to work for a company that self-publishes.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Not really

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Definitely permanent. It makes it easier to plan your future, but I wouldn't mind changing jobs after 3-5 years. You just a new challenge to stay motivated (at least I do).

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Smaller studio

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

One large project

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Either

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

1. Of course. As someone who majored in animation and visual effects, that was one of my career goals. However, looking for work in the field, not just games, has been difficult so I've been going back to school to find a better degree that will secure me a job.

2. Long term employment is the goal. I've been doing contract work here and there, but they only last a little while. After that you're off looking for more work again which can be exhausting.

3. Hard one. If it had to choose, I would choose AAA. Mostly because there's a higher chance you'll be staying with them long term then say an Indie studio. Not saying Indie studios don't make money, but the chances of getting laid off from, say, Treyarch, Naughty Dog, or Insomniac doesn't seem likely once you get in.

4. Definitely several projects. One project after awhile will definitely fatigue you of even looking at it. You need to change it up to keep yourself sane and fresh.

5. Publisher for sure. As often it is to joke about how evil EA or Activision are, without a publisher development would lack a lot of secured funding to make sure devs get paid. Self publishing is, correct me if I'm wrong, soley on what the game makes when it comes out. Sure there can be payment secured before development, but most of the time it will never be the full amount you asked for until you finish your work. If the source of income were to run out of money half way through development things start getting on the tricky side of "Should I just help finish this and hope the game makes enough money to pay me back?" or just abandon and find new work.

Sure, why not.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
I've considered it.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
Long term/permanent

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
Probably a smaller studio, but I can see the merits in both.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
Large project

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
Umm, Self-publish, I guess, so that the publisher can't interfere with the vision? I don't know, I'm not sure that I have a strong opinion on this.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

Have considered it many times in my past, more from a design/producer side vs programming. Life always gets in the way ;P

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Stability is valuable, I need that for myself and my family

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Smaller studio. More room for individuality and less of what I assume would be the "corporate" pressure at larger studios.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

Depends on the game. I would think I would love to work on one project, labor of love so to speak.

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

Self publish, for the same reason as working at a smaller studio. Just what I perceive is more freedom to do things how YOU want.

Cool thread :)

1. Yes

2. long term / permanent employment

3. large / AAA studio

4. one large project over the course of several years

5. a company that self-publishes games

1. No
2. Longterm
3. Small indie
4. Large project
5. Has Publisher

1. Never been, but always been my dream.

2. Doesn't particularly matter.

3. Either really. I have some tested concepts that would work for a large AAA title, and less tested, but still fun ideas that would work for a range of indie titles.

4. Either. As stated above.

5. Self-publish preferably.

1.yes. I have considered it and have dabbled in some.

2. Long term. Just seems more stable.

3. Small. It would be a more personal game.

4. I would prefer a larger project but in reality I work better with smaller ones at the same time.

5. Self publish. No contest. I don't want to have an 85 metacritic requirement.

1) I have strongly considered it, but am not actively working towards it.

2) Long-term/permanent.

3) Small/indie.

4) I'd prefer to be focused on one project at a time.

5) Depends on who the publisher might be, but generally I think self-publishing would be ideal.

Cheers!

-self-publish

1. I have considered it. In fact, it was my plan after high school but life had other ideas.

2. Permanent. Definitely like having the security.

3. Hard to say. AAA, probably. You have the resources and, though there's less creative freedom, it's not like big publishers never put out creative games.

4. One project, much prefer to have a big focus than work on lots of little things.

5. Self-publishing. Not working in the industry I can't say for sure, but it just seems like it would be a better set up having all decisions within the one company.

1. No. Never considered it. I don't have the necessary skills.

3. Large AAA studio I think. I don't have much interest in indie games so I'm not sure I could find the passion to work on them.

4. I believe working on several different projects would be more enjoyable.

5. Self-publish. I think we would feel more in control of our product.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

No and no

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Long-term or permanent employment

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

AAA studio due to resource availability

5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?

2. I prefer a permanent employment.
3. I'd prefer to work for a small/indie studio
4. I prefer to work on several different projects over a few years
5. I'd like to work in a company that self-publishes games

1. I wanted to be part of the game development process when I was starting in college but I am now in a different field altogether.

2. I'd prefer long term/permanent employment over a temporary one. I like having job security.

3. I think I'd rather be a part of a large/AAA studio than an indie one.

4. I'd want to work on one large project over many years.

5. No clue what would it entail if a studio self publishes or partners up with a publisher but just based on a gut feeling I'd rather be working for a company that could publish its own games rather than fishing around for a partner.

1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?

I've considered it.

2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?

Long term. I did the self employed thing for 15 years and the uncertainty is killer.

3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?

Small studio. Preferably one that is owned by, but left alone by, a large publisher.

4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?

It doesn't matter, so long as I am making a game I am excited about.
