1. Have you considered becoming a game developer / are you currently a game developer?
2. In general, do you prefer contract / temporary employment or long term / permanent employment?
3. If you worked in the game industry, would you prefer to work at a small / indie studio or a large / AAA studio?
4. Would you prefer to work on one large project over the course of several years, or work on several different projects over the same course of time?
5. If you did work in the game industry, would you prefer to work in a company that has a publisher as a partnership or work in a company that self-publishes games?
Answers
1. No, as much as I find the industry to be an interesting one, this is just isn't my calling in life.
2. Prefer long term/permanent employment by a mile. The sense of security/stability it provides is invaluable.
3. Entirely depends on working conditions, salary, benefits and leadership. If these can match or in ways can provide a more meaningful experience than working at a large firm, then I would have no issue with taking a job with a small/indie studio.
4. Again it depends. If the product (in this scenario the game) is interesting to work on and it provides me with sufficient challenges to keep me involved and engaged over the course of production, working on a large single project wouldn't be an issue. Same conditions apply to multiple small projects. I guess what I'm saying it's not a matter of time but what I'll be doing with that time is what's important.
5. Entirely depends on the said relationship with the publisher. Video games market can be a volatile one and as such a self publishing role could prove to be a high risk/high reward situation. However working with a publisher who doesn't connect well at a leadership/support level could be just as if not more risky. Severance of such a relationship wouldn't be surprising but can be devastating nonetheless if a developer team relied on them too much.
Hope that helps. Best of luck
