Any reason why Sega hasn't made shenmue 3 yet?

I recall reading that the game had a budget closer to 30 million and that the overall budget was always inflated. SEGA was stupid to give the game that big of a budget. That was the biggest issue. There's no reason to think that a Shenmue III wouldn't be moderately successful. No one is asking for a 20 hour single player experience with Uncharted graphics. I'd be happy with a Deadly Premonition type budget and a 19.99 retail release.

I've heard Shenmue cost $60-70 million, but that supposedly included some of the work done on Shenmue II and III.

But how can you sell 5-10 million copies on a system that's struggling to reach that kind of install base?
It was probably like being on a train with broken brakes set to collide with another train: your only choices are to jump out or stay on, and you'll probably die either way. Expensive projects like that aren't exactly done overnight afterall, we even had Saturn prototype footage.

I want to play Shenmue III as much as the next fan, but I pretty much gave up some time ago... :(

Putting aside the original games failure (in comparison of the ridiculous money it took to make them) argument, the cult following of the series just can't support a new entry and I can't see Shenmue reaching a broader audience in its current state.

Still, I hope they release I/II on digital platforms somewhere down the road. I like to replay them from time to time, but don't have my Dreamcast anymore. Also, I got my DC waaaaay after the system died and thus never had the occasion to give Sega my money directly when it comes to Shenmue. I would literally buy full-price copies for every platform it comes out on that I own.

Yu Suzuki recently said that that figure is incorrect.

Yeah, I'm trying to find that article too, but with no luck so far.

Initial estimates were that the budget was as high as $70 million by Yu Suzuki himself, but it was actually later stated to be $47 million. The truth is somewhere around there

Yu Suzuki said:
“From the beginning, the new title without using Akira would be more acceptable,” he said, so they went in a different direction. According to Suzuki, the $70 million Sega said it cost was an embellishment. It was "only $47 million," he said. "Well, maybe I shouldn't say only," he joked.

I know that I'm an extreme Shenmue fanboy but I'd buy two copies of a Shenmue HD Collection for every system it would be sold on.

SEGA is definitely not done with the Shenmue franchise.

Remember this?

I'll post it again since it looks like some of you just want to troll without reading what other people have to say: Shenmue I sold over 1.2 million copies on a failed console alone.

I'm sure that the people who say that nobody cares about Shenmue are fans of games that have sold less than the first Shenmue.
Yes, but that was 13 years ago. We've got a whole new generation of gamers now, gamers who have no exposure to Shenmue other than the generic-looking guy who appeared in their Sonic racing game.

Shenmue did so well on DC because it was revolutionary at the time (plus there weren't many other big DC exclusives). The shock factor and freshness would be gone with a third game.

I wudnt minda cheap online game. Even a social game. Even one a text base adventure.

Just wanna finish this shit ffs. Fuck off sega.

Ha any other game reached Shenmue's level of detail yet?
Yes. Being able to pick things up and rotate them with your single-axis wrist isn't a big deal anymore (as LA Noire showed) and many games have environments with comparable attention to detail (Yakuza, Sleeping Dogs, even Mafia II)

Have you even played the game? There hasn't been a game released (that I can think of) that has the amount of unlockable content and easter eggs that Shenmue has. I can't ever recall playing another game where I discover new things every time I play through it. New cut scenes, the way things play out, new dialogue, etc.

OP: i'm a shenmue fan till i die, but every time someone does this juxtaposition with Yakuza, it breaks my heart. one series was profitable for them, the former wasn't, if even due to timing.

i wanna say their big digi push can someday justify an HD re-release to test the waters, but a full-on part 3 is simply a dream i won't let go of.

Yu Suzuki left the company.

not really

i mean, kind of? his status to me there is still unclear, last i heard it was like he was being rented out

in a perfect world, he'd have his own unlimited budget like miyamoto, honestly...he's gaming royalty, everyone who likes nearly anything here on GAF owes his designs something.

Because they weren't very good games.

YOURE NOT A GOOD GAME actually you're right, they're the best

Shemue 3 would be a LOT cheaper if made today...

especially given that (speaking for a chunk of the fanbase) a lot've us would pay good money even if it just used the DC engine & had the last portion of the game told like disc 2 of xenogears, vs the nothing we've had so far...though a game that used the Yakuza 5 engine would be amazing, and hopefully not that much more cost a year or more from now

Because we really wanted our revenge. Playing a sequel and then being told to calm down pissed me off.

Hong was trying to make sure you were ready to take on Lan Di, Reiko

Have any other game reached Shenmue's level of detail yet?

Nope. Does that level of detail need to be in a game? Absolutely not and the additional labour hours that it took added to the cost which ultimately led to its downfall. However, if that detail wasn't in the game, we probably wouldn't be talking about it now as it's what helped it be so immersive and magical. Considering when it was release, that shit was mind blowing. However, commercially, it probably doesnt make sense for Sega and I gave up hope long ago .

What I don't understand is why don't they re-release Shenmue 1 & 2 in a HD collection and gauge off the sales is it viable to make Shenmue 3? I suppose it makes too much sense for Sega.

It would be a gamble as to whether it would be profitable, I would think. Plus, I'm sure the mere mention of "Shenmue" in a Sega boardroom these days is taboo.

Before Shenmue 3 they have to make Shenmue HD collection. Make it digital only to save costs if need be. But in all honesty even if those sold great I think Nagoshi and Team Yakuza wouldn't want to come back to a cult dormant franchise at the risk of "betraying" the ideal sequel that the fans have in their mind. Sega just moved on.

it would cost way more than it would make in returns* as what fans love about shenmue is the incredible attention to detail in the game world which means they couldn't really make a cheap version that would make a profit. they could conceivably do a visual novel to finish the story but i don't know if they want to so long after shenmue 2 and with yu suzuki lacking power and maybe interest

*and the opportunity cost of the right people doing it instead of making a yakuza game is significant too

hopefully sega make the financial mistake though (so long as it doesn't kill the company completely). or they put out an hd re-release and that somehow really takes off as people appreciate its genius in a walking dead & journey game of the year world where 'it's like gta but without fun' is less of a criticism (reality: decent sales to dreamcast fans and the curious but 5/10 reviews from major sites puts most gamers off).

There are a lot of Dreamcast games that I want to see return, sadly Shenmue isn't one of them, I like the games, I know it'll sell like shit because SEGA, like most publishers, don't know how to market games.

Download only episodic version. Shenmue Stories or something like that. Or just HD version of 1 & 2 to download.

Shenmue HD has been completed for a while now:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/03/16/shenmue-hd-is-finished-claims-report

Before someone says, "But yeah...IGN," please consider that Shenmue HD was apparently being made in conjunction with Jet Set Radio HD. This was reported by multiple sources and leaked out.

SEGA has no idea what they want to do with this franchise. They include Ryo in the first SEGA All Stars racing game and leave him out in the second. Yu Suzuki comments that he thinks SEGA is going to allow him to make Shenmue III. Yu Suzuki says he thinks SEGA would let him buy the IP. It's pretty obvious that they refuse to shit or get off of the pot. I think they told him they'd allow him to make Shenmue III, SEGA drags its feet, Yu Suzuki gets irritated and asks if he can buy the IP, SEGA says he can and ends up not committing to getting rid of the IP from its library.
