Anyone else worried about Final Fantasy XV?

They need to scrap the current combat system and go back to turn based.

Regardless of anything though I will get the game.

I'd be more worried if Toriyama was working on it. In saying that I haven't really enjoyed the battle system in the Duscae demo but I really enjoyed Crisis core so I'm willing to give Tabata a chance.

I even enjoyed Dirge Of Cerberus and loved every FF games and their Spin-off
Except for Crisis Core, FUCK THAT GAME

I am immune to be worried about enjoying an FF game. Bring it on, I say!

In defense of Toriyama, at least he's got a better eye for battle systems than Tabata.

Meh, people give Toriyama shit, but he delivered what he promised regardless of your enjoyment of it. Can't say the same thing about Nomura.

I guess what surprises me most about Final Fantasy XV is how many people are calling it their most anticipated game of all time. I look at the footage and news we have of the game so far and I look at that statement and all I can think is... why, why would people be calling this their most anticipated game of all time.

Don't get me wrong, back in the PS1 days I was the biggest Square fanboy around. Final Fantasy VII was my favorite game of all time by far and I scooped up literally every Square game that came out. But the Square-Enix of today is not the same Square of yesteryear. They've (in my opinion) lost a lot of the magic that used to make them so untouchable, and have released plenty of poor games in the process.

Yet they still seem to command an unrelentingly rabid fanbase, particularly for the Final Fantasy titles. Don't get me wrong, I want Final Fantasy XV to be amazing and worth all the hype, I just haven't seen anything yet that suggests it will be.

FFVersus13 was some people's most anticipated game of all time. Ie. Me

Pretty sure COD is not the audience the series has ever gone for. What's your point?

Yeah obviously it's a shortcut example. My point is they think jrpg crowd is too small for the budget and the risk of their games now. So they go for something that will please a western young male audience more (yet they are on the opposite side for the characters)

The way I look at the combat: I loved Kingdom Hearts 1, I still loved it in 1.5 HD Remix. That game had clunky combat and a clunky camera. So, as much as I would prefer the mechanics and camera to be much better, I don't think it will be a game breaking issue for me.

As for the dialogue... it's a Final Fantasy game. There isn't one with voice acting that ISN'T awful at least half the time. You can either roll with that or you can't. I've been able to so far.

You can't be disappointed when expectations are this low!

My main concern is the development hell FFXV has been through... There has been so much change and iteration from the original vision that I believe the game won't be as good as it could've been with competent management on the team and at SE in general. What we'll get is a Frankenstein monster full of failed expectations and compromises. That sort of game won't be the savior people are hoping for.

I certainly wouldn't mind being proven wrong, though.

Has it been through development hell, though? We all know about Versus XIII, but I don't think worked on that thing for YEARS before it became FFXV and they definitely started over.

My feeling is that Square Enix consistently announces projects too soon and it feels like eons until the games come out, but XV could have started development in earnest in early 2013. 4+ year development cycles are not that uncommon (Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3 were both 4 year cycles, for example).

No, I'm not worried. The game will be whatever it is. It's not a big deal, unless you go to bed every night crying about StellaLuna or Regis's redesign.

It plays just fine (despite the performance being currently substandard) and has great feedback. Pretty much every important hit & knightsguard comes with a controller rumble.

Dialogue? Tabata already knows about the usual complaints like 'batman' Noctis and Ignis acting like a butler ("Highness"). Otherwise, play with japanese audio if it bothers you.

No, he definitely didn't.

I think he did lol.

I mean, I suffered through the Lightning Trilogy, I'm definitely looking forward to a new mainline Final Fantasy, especially since I've loved the concept of VersusXIII from the beginning. But...

I'm definitely weary about some of the changes made to the game, from the aesthetics of certain characters (please at least include a flashback of Suit-Regis!) to the switch to a hybrid action/tactical combat style. I can't shake the feeling the team don't know what they're doing, and desperately trying to please everyone while pleasing no-one. I do think it will be good overall, and I hope marketing steps up and delivers awesome trailers and give juicy information about the world, combat and characters. That's what's really needed, not that boring "Dawn" trailer, not Tabata's "here's what we've changed from VersusXIII" spiel and certainly not "do you want a moogle? Because we dunno if we should add that."

We only saw a small portion of the Combat. No Magic and the sword selection is now manually controlled. Lots of changes and I think in the end, the game will be great. Way better than XIII which I really didnt like

Yes. Can't stop thinking this was Nomura's masterpiece, and now they're shitting on whatever he was trying to do.

Well, at least we'll always have that glorious 2013 trailer.

Honestly I think the final product will be a clusterfuck of parts pieced together into a boring story with bad gameplay design, ridiculous looking characters (worst FF cast ever, imo), and poor technical performance on PS4. But with amazing music, of course. I hope I'm wrong but everything I've seen so far is just meh at best. I guess having the lowest expectations possible is a good thing at this point.

I said it in the predictions thread and I'll say it again: I predict FFXV is going to disappoint a lot of people.

MGSV was bad enough, but this will probably be worse. They seem to be scrapping and replacing and making odd choices.

I used to be hyped for this game, after playing the demo for a long time, I don't think it will be too good. I'm more anxious to play the remake of Final Fantasy VII at this point. I hope I'm wrong about XV though

I'm just not sure what to expect really, same goes for the 7 remake.

The demo had some good ideas, so i'm hopefull, but yeah, with new people on the project and the weirdness that was 13, its hard to know what to expect.

I'm sure I'll have my issues with this, but I know I'll like it. I loved FFXIII even with all of the issues I had with that game. Mainly because of the battle system. The game doesn't even have to have an "objectively good" story to please me. I just love the type of adventures SE makes with FF games. I like their artstyle, the music, the worlds, the scale, the epicness. The only reason I can't play most FF games now is because I just can't do most turn based combat anymore. The fact that this is an action system means that I'll automatically find it a lot more playable than pretty much any other turn based system.

The only real real problem I had with FFXIII was how linear it was. I wouldn't have been able to play that if it weren't for the battle system being so enjoyable. I'm pretty much guaranteed to like this game. It doesn't need to be amazing to please me. People complain about the story and characters from FFXIII, and even though I agree with a lot of the complaints, I still found it to be a fun experience. I dunno, I guess you could say my expectations aren't high, but along with that, I don't need this game to achieve what a lot of people want from it for me to be pleased. My main worry is still the battle system, but i'm not really too worried. Even if it's not amazing and just playable, I should enjoy the game.

Yeah. I was excited when the first announcement trailers happened. The more I see of what it actually turned into, the less I care. Playing the demo sealed the deal for me; I really don't give a shit about this game at all anymore, or really any JRPGs anymore.

Yeah me neither, nothing really points to it being a joke. They said, "thanks Neogaf for the memes" but that's it. Sounds like they just wanted some fan interaction if nothing else.

Here's the breakdown and where the "joke" fits in:

-FFXV Twitter shows off how they're using photogrammetry to create realistic props for the open world such as the rock assets.

-Also, they tweet an older video showing how they have been using the technique for a while and how some of their real world location scouting has already been realized in Episode Duscae.

-The internet interprets this as mismanagement as they're going to such great lengths to get pretty rocks late in development. This overreaction came from a position of ignorance on the process as photogrammetry is an extremely easy and time efficient process compared to hand sculpting and texturing all the assets their creating from their field work(again not just rocks).

-FFXV Twitter "jokes" that people really love rocks, because they are so fixated on one aspect of the previous tweets. They effectively refused to engage in a conversation about their game development timelines with people not in the industry.

Extra context: The FFXV marketing cycle had been in a self-imposed lull due to the development shifting to focus on all aspects of the project at once. Typically game devs have at least one or two parts of the game that they keep polished to a further extent than the rest of the project so they can show it off for trade shows etc. In extreme cases, this can cause detrimental effects to the development of the entire game (see the many public changes to Bioshock Infinite throughout its development as a result of focusing too hard on public demos).

The FFXV team decided to mitigate that by staying quiet until March when the game will be largely complete. The marketing department decided they could not afford to be quiet about the game for that long, so several efforts have been made to maintain communication with fans, albeit a drip feed, via their twitter account and forums.

My take: Square's marketing should stay quiet until March. Even though they are well intentioned, their drip feed leaves a lot of room for vocal and impatient fans to turn everything they say into something negative.

It seems to be coming along fine, and people who are disingenuous or uninformed can casually shit on it. Everyone is a winner! What's to worry about?

I'm just ready for it to be out so we can start to see something new for the mainline series. The XIII worlds have certainly overstayed their welcome. I'd love for them to just go turn based again à la X; seems like a good way to make something super flashy that is also easier/faster to create.

It used to be called "Versus XIII...?"

It wasn't set in the same universe, it used similar mythos. Like two games involving Greek mythology, but a fake Greek mythology they invented.

That was stupid and no one knew why the hell they would do that. Such was Square under the helm of Yoichi Wada. For FFXV they have a new mythology that is based on Japanese mythology and Christianity.

Wasn't it even more vague then that? I thought that the only thing the Fabula Nova whatever had in common was that crystals were important to the plot of all of them.

I'm not worried. The series is pretty hit and miss. If it's miss, it's no big deal. There's lots of other big RPGs coming out. If this turns out to be good, that would be cool. But last great FF was FFX made in 2001. So I have no expectations for it.

Don't care about it enough to be worried.

It's amazing to me that while SE is struggling to get core games like XV and KH3 out there, their published stuff (Star Ocean 5, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Nier: Automata) seem to be coming along nicely.

So other than Dragon Quest XI which looks great for a game this early in development, SE is a much better publisher than a developer nowadays.

I'm not too fond of what it seems to be turning into ever since it was handed over to Tabata from Nomura. I realize it's probably a much more tangible project now, but somehow it doesn't feel as exciting as when Nomura was giving us tiny tidbits of what he was trying to achieve with this game. Now it somehow seems like something else all together, and far more pedestrian.

I'm still looking forward to it, but honestly I can take it or leave it at this point. Wouldn't be heartbroken if it ends up sucking. FFVIIremake is what I'm invested in.

Not anymore than I was back when it was Versus although for slightly different reasons. The changes can be worrying but a lot games go through this but this One was just very public about it. We'll see how it turns out. I still predict that if the story/characters are shit then the blame will be entirely on Tabata. I even predict that if the game is good some will still proclaim that Versus would've been better.
