Not true, even this past week there was a huge back-and-forth in the "why women complain about female character designs" thread from a user who genuinely just likes the outfits. That user hasn't been banned. He's been sternly replied to (by myself, even), but he's not banned. He would've been banned if he said something like "I like anime titties and I don't care what women think about it," because obviously he would.

For most issues like this though, "the program" has been firmly established by facts, evidence, and history, and sometimes the moderation team doesn't feel like rehashing all of that for the 1,000th time. So they just ban and move on. Their reasoning is (usually) sound, though. In the recent back-and-forth in the female character design thread, a mod actually wrote a long-ass manifesto calmly explaining exactly why the designs were an issue even though some people like them. Sometimes they'll still do that.

If everyone else is with "the program," it might be worth investigating why that is.
The fact that that you think it is okay to ban someone (or "sternly" talk to someone like they are a problematic kid) because they have an opinion you disagree with is rather concerning. You are literally promoting the policing of thoughts that are not in line with yours. There should be no reason to ban someone for stating that they like anime tits and don't care what women think about it. That is an absolutely valid opinion to have and state.

People are "with the program" because they will be banned otherwise. There have been plenty of people who use data and research to go against the popular opinion and they were falsely called "transphobic", "racist", "sexist", "alt-right" and other buzz words devoid of their original meaning. Resetera.kiwifarms.net doesn't lie, mate.

Note the Ban Justice Project:

Give this thread a read, please:

https://www.neogaf.com/threads/neogaf-ban-review-justice-project-off-topic-edition.1463407/

We've been building bridges.

I'm here to resolve the abuses of power, sabotage, and injustices that led to the formation of that place under egregiously unjust circumstances. Hundreds of bans mainly perpetrated by a handful of folks who ended up informing Reset's policies were slipped in through the cracks of our old platform's deficient logging, accompanying a despicable smear campaign with *no* basis and a DDoS attack to give the incompetent showrunners over there enough time to figure out how to run a forum.

13 months and change doesn't seem to be enough for them to figure out how to do what we're best in class at. On the contrary, they only know how to ban things that scare them and copy whatever announcement we make, only to botch it horribly.

If you're interested in real discussion, come on home. Be civil, mind the rules. If you did something stupid and account suicided during the angry mob last year, send an email to support@ explaining yourself (see ban justice protocols in linked thread above) and we will take all emails under consideration, I hold no grudges. I hold self-respect and dignity, however, so phrase your emails accordingly, please.

We did one of the biggest forum migrations in history, vb3 --> xf 1.5 ---> xf2, with a >100 million post database, in 3 hours. We have fully custom designs we've spend months of internal development and *significant* investment for the sake of the NeoGAF community. What do these jokers have to show for themselves other than community good will they manufactured with a bullshit scandal and a campaign to destroy this place with porn bombs as a means of "virtue signaling" (what would your mom think of that one?), and some off-the-shelf turnkey shit they bolted on haphazardly? They can barely get that shit to work.

We have near 20 years in experience at this.

I weathered this unconscionably horrible shitstorm of hate and baseless accusation for this place. Along with a few loyal hardasses who saw it exactly for what it was and helped keep this place afloat and back on the road forward, we're. STILL. STANDING. Retire, bitch? Not so much. I have responsibilities.

Are these responsible people? Just people?

Come on home.

Unless you posted a noose picture and encouraged my suicide, or porn bombed this place like a pathetic coward.. Then meet me somewhere with a signed waiver, consent form, and EMTs on call. I kid.

NeoGAF is not what the crazy bubble people and activist modders elsewhere would have you believe.

It's just a video game message board on the internet where we encourage talking things out like respectful, mature intellectuals. Along with some healthy trolling to lighten the mood -- generally not getting you banned, but we keep it real and include our own transparent public ban record so you know exactly why if you were. Not "disingenuous with a history of infractions."

Your call.

I posted in those threads as well and didn't get banned for it. I believe my thoughts were along the lines of "well she would've been banned for that in any other corporate job, but it's bullshit that she's being harassed for it now." Pretty reasonable position, I'd say. The mods must've thought so too.
My ban was because I criticized game's journalism after a moderator edited the first post to dictate that criticizing gaming journalism was not allowed. So I broke the rules very explicitly, as you can see, even if there was nothing fundamentally wrong with my post.

Anyways, as other members have also stated, you only need to be very careful at crafting whatever you write if your opinions do not follow the program. Otherwise, you can go full-on "ALL WHITE MEN ARE TRASH" caps-lock mode, and if the moderators like you, they'll do nothing.

I'll take your word for it seeing as I don't read the place, I'm just going off bans posted here.

This though is a good example of what I don't like about era. Everyone is not with the program they're just forced to stay out of the thread because of potential bans or the fact that they'd get insulted and dogpiled if they posted in it. What exactly is achieved from a discussion like that? FWIW that thread reads like pure hysteria to me.

It’s kind of funny that resetters came here during the black out.

Just kinda proves that they are mostly followers who can’t function without someone to tell them who they are.
Some are just curious....and others simply like to chat about games..just leave the forced narratives at the door here and your gonna enjoy yourself.

Healthy trolling allowed confirmed! :messenger_sunglasses:

So please, tell us more about them "modders." :messenger_winking_tongue:

Edit: anyone else see the word modders instead of bloggers, and instantly think: "He called the shit poo."

Nah, those kind of bans still bother me. There's nothing wrong with someone liking video game titties or whatever and not caring that some are bothered by it. As long as they aren't attacking another member in stating that opinion of course. There's always things that are going to be enjoyed by some and found offensive by others and I don't like when sites ban discussion of things along those lines.

Similarly, I thought there were a lot of shitty bans around the CDPR tweet. People saying they didn't think it was intentionally hateful and just some idiot social media person trying to be edgy with a trending meme weren't "dismissing transphobia." They were just saying they didn't think that tweet (or the Gamergate one) from them were deliberately hateful. Just shitty edgelord humor. Same thing about the crap with James Gunn's old edgelord tweets. Or people banned for "false equivalencies" when telling people they shouldn't insult straights or whites and so on when they're just pointing out that it's a double standard as people would (deservedly) be instantly perma banned if they said the same about women or minorities.

You'll find no one outside of alt right shit heels who think blatant sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia etc. should be allowed. And that stuff doesn't fly here on new GAF and leads to bans when reported (though some very thinly veiled stuff sometimes is un-actioned a bit more than I'd like). They just take it too far over there.

They should have just set that site up as specifically a safe space gaming forum for women, minorities and LBTQA+ folk if they were going to be so overbearing with it as it is no doubt nice for those folk to have such a space. It just shouldn't have pulled most of the traffic from the busiest game-focused forum. It sucks that there's not really a nice, high traffic, well moderated, traditional (i.e. not Reddit) forum to discuss games on anymore that's not heavily politicized. Best you can do is go there or here and make an active effort to stay away from those threads and be vigilant in reporting that stuff when it festers into OTs rather than the threads dedicated to those issues.

And/or just cut back a ton on posting which I have and am working on further reducing. Forums just aren't what they once were. Part of it is just how tribal and politicized everything is today and part of it is just me being 40 vs in that teens to late 20s/30ish demographic that makes up the most active posters online. i.e. generation gap.

I'm literally not promoting the policing of thoughts that are not in line with mine. People are free to say whatever they want--but that doesn't make their statements immune to criticism.

Stating you don't care what women think about an issue that negatively effects them on a macro level is indeed a valid opinion to have and state. It would probably get you banned though, because forums don't exist in a vacuum and ResetEra is trying to be welcoming to everyone. Not just dudes. There are more women posting there now than I ever remember seeing on GAF in its heydey.

Yeah, I wish the forum was up so I could link the reply. It was a really great post from Finale Fireworker.

And I understand that it can be frustrating if you're not yet "with the program" to have everyone dogpile on you, but you should also try and understand the feeling of exhaustion people feel to constantly re-explain the same things to every new poster who's simply "asking questions." The answers are out there already, Era genuinely operates under the assumption that people will seek them out on their own if they actually care.

I'm speaking from experience here, as I went on a similar journey. You can look up my own post history here on GAF to see me shittalking Anita Sarkeesian and such.

These discussions don't exist in a vaccum though, that's the thing. Sexist depictions of women actively harm women, a group that has had it rough enough for... like, ever. Trying to play nice and keep everything "civil" simply maintains the status quo, which isn't something marginalized groups care to maintain. Era is empathetic to those groups.

I really wish I could link that post here, I'm way less articulate than homedude was.

I appreciate the effort here, but as I was browsing through the ban list I noticed most of them didn't link to the actual thread? Unless I'm missing something (still figuring out this XF 2.0 thing). I feel like that's super important for transparency.

Also maybe less snark in the ban messages, that's what turned many people off from GAF in the olden days. :messenger_winking:

On the one hand, the heydey was a long enough back that it's certainly possible. On the other hand, both the producers of TLJ and the devs of Battlefield 5 bought into this type of claim without checking the receipts it seems to me. So perhaps some receipts are in order.

From my understanding GAF regarding politics is more like Joe Rogan . Where he is open to different views unlike era which is like a far left dictatorship, where if you say you agree with anything in the right, or you like someone who support a right wing idea you are deemed a far right KKK nazi.
Sounds like something a NAZI would say!!!

All kidding aside, I was referring to oldGAF (pre-exodus), which was basically what RE is right now. I'm not going to say which is worse, but the feel was very much the same in that you could see a thread topic and predict the course of the thread (i.e. an inevitable graveyard of grey usernames). It wasn't good, and to be honest I'm not sure it would've change if not for showergate and the subsequent exodus.

Alas, here we are. For me, the golden era of GAF was when Drinky and Ignatz Mouse were mods. Never a better time.

Haven't been on here in a year. Glad I can still login.
I'm over on era, rarely post but when I do it is usually on the off topic side. Threads change subject too fast for me to really be a part of anything, I think I contributed the most on "Looking for a Job is soul crushing" the most.

First of all, there is a difference between criticism and the requiring of a ban. Secondly, I never stated that it was a male issue. There are plenty of women as well who like anime tits and don't give a damn what others have to say or think. So please do not push that disingenuous strawman. Anyways, I was going to have a nice long reply, but I think that a video would summarize what I have to say in a (less gentle) manner. This post brought to you by MalkaBot:

NPC's were infiltrating the GAF Network. Fortunately, Evilore had a cunning plan in place just in case this would happen: Armed with a reset button, he was able to stop the droves of anonymous, irrelevant and samey opinion.

Evilore saved us all from NPC Mountain. Evilore is what we should aspire to. Evilore is what we should breathe through our nostrils, inject in our veins.

Evilore is John Malkavich's forgotten son.

He must be spared, Thanos. This boy has plans that soon will crush your little universe.

@EviLore, By the heavens, thank you for your magical button, your celestial wand of intelligence, and your random token of prosperity, dispensed every 2-3 months or so with a new update. The ban page was a gift from the Gods, and by law and virtue, we shall uphold it in your honor, Oh Evilore.

An addendum to the above:

The powers that be from Evilore's wand of intelligence are only matched by the proverbial healing powers that are his text novelles. Oh dear Evilore, bless us more with your syllables of wisdom! We mere forumites are only servants to achieving the Greater Good: The achievement known as Sticking it up to the Boss! Oh Tyler, if only your voice is as soothing as are you alinea's... I can read and feel the summer lillies that you would take when on one of your hiking trials. NeoGAF isn't just a forum, its a way of life - The Life of Tyler Malka, certified MadAss.

Oh Evilore! Bless upon those that read your posts obsessively, liking them as you go, strengthening you with your newfound sources of support! If only a can of Evilore could be upon us, so we can enrich ourselves with his might! Evilore is what should be thought at universities, not Juche, not communism, no, Malkaveli himself should teach us Evil's Lore: The doctrine that brings us happiness, forum themes, and new and free moderators to harrass/to consult!

Let this letter bestow upon you, Oh Evilore, it was written by your own server Clerk, @Gromph!
I have brought HIS Kingdom to Earth and a bloody cleansing is nigh.
Indeed, it is well overdue. I am the leader of The Five, we are the
Watchers of the Gate of Souls. We shall make the way for the coming of
HIS Glorious Army and as a fanfare, we demand several sacrifices. Blood
sacrifices for HIS pleasure. So be aware then, that the road to your
Golgotha shall be slippery with your blood. FOR WE ARE MANY.
I remain, as ever,
Gromph
You see it, Oh Evilore? The Watchers are upon you! Lead this Glorious Army to the gates of prosperity, with you as the new Leader of The Five! With you, oh humble leader, our footsteps become earthquakes! With you, oh splendid soul, our posting skills will increase to withstand any Army of Textual might! Lead the way, oh dear Evilore-San, and show what a TRUE MadAss can do under the right circumstances.

Your servants await, oh wise one.

:messenger_winking:
The issue with the bolded is it's clearly not trying to be welcoming to everyone. It's safe space for women, minorities and their "allies."

Again, I don't have issue with such a site existing and I'd consider myself an "ally." I just don't give a shit about discussing those issues on a gaming forum, or online in general. That shit's a waste of time and I spent too much energy being an "SJW" in my 20s on other forums (like the Vs. forum on Cheapassgamer.com back in the day). So it just sucks that GAF went down that route and that the split just led to the most of the great gaming forum content going to a new site that's even more extreme on those issues. I miss pre-Gamergate GAF when the only regular annoyance was console warrior nonsense.

There's just no good place to discuss games online anymore. It's either highly politicized forums like these two, unmoderated/undermoderated ones full of hate and/or fanboy nonsense or Reddit with it's format that limits discussion and is full of memes and other shit fishing for upvotes. It makes me enjoy the hobby less as playing games and shooting the shit online about them with little drama (fanboys aside) was staple of the hobby for me from the N64 era (got first computer and dial up connect, started gaming seriously with NES). It's not as much fun as a solitary hobby and none of my local friends are gamers.

I appreciate the effort here, but as I was browsing through the ban list I noticed most of them didn't link to the actual thread? Unless I'm missing something (still figuring out this XF 2.0 thing). I feel like that's super important for transparency.

That I do agree with. That ban history page was better early on about linking to the post that led to the ban and having less snarky messages. Now it's less transparent and the messages make the site seem less professional. A lot of banned users have private profiles to so you can even look through their post history. Though I suppose that's probably not able to change with the European privacy laws (at least for European members).

You're not wrong, but that kinda ties into my initial reply here about "not being a piece of shit." If you're not an ally to groups that have been marginalized and abused for eons, what does that say about you as a person? I don't mind cutting people like that loose from my gaming discussions. Because again, at the end of the day, all of this is happening in the real world. Political issues don't disappear when you talk about videogames on a forum. I get that people like the "escape" (and I understand it, to a degree), but everything is political even if we try to ignore it. These days, ignoring it is somewhat irresponsible. It's too bad, but that's reality.

Yeah I made it about 3 seconds into that, the voice is just too grating.
Sure, let's go with that excuse :p

A lot of banned users have private profiles to so you can even look through their post history. Though I suppose that's probably not able to change with the European privacy laws (at least for European members).
The mods already made a mention on those issues. It is something to do with the plugins and the site itself. They are trying to fix it.

Fucking amazing post. One of the best I've seen EviLore ever write and I've been using GAF since 2006. He always had a way with words.

It's positive and powerful words like this that make me want to perma-return to NeoGAF. Lapsed Gaffer here. Migrated to Era in the split. I've been checking out GAF all last night and today and rather miraculously it has recovered, substantially, and seems to have good people running the show and now, I believe, has a bright future. The health of this place is vastly better than even just a few months back. I check out this place now and again over the last year or so to get a feel of how it's going and the state it's in now is healthier and better than I've seen it since the drama crash happened and in all the cascade of time that followed. NeoGAF seems to be back on form and primed to recover to a position that could potentially be better than it has ever been. Chilled out. Relaxed. Freedom to post. Awesome new mods. Slick new design. Reliable. Gaming side speeding up and recovering. This place is the best I've seen it in 13 months. I think the presumption that GAF would collapse was incredibly short sighted because EviLore stood strong, weathered the storm, did everything in his power to get this place back on track with impressive proficiency and now NeoGAF is shaping up to better than it ever was. Kudos. Seriously. Kicking myself somewhat that I didn't apply to be a mod now.

Still sussing it out to a certain extent. But from what I've seen? I want to come back and start primarily using NeoGAF again.

I held onto my account in some hope that this site would have changed back to some semblance of its former self. I see that's never going to happen under you; nothing has changed.

I 100% went to era when the split happened, because i mostly need my fast video game news. I almost never talk about politics or off topic things, except when it's about drugs. So era is a nice place, going by what i need from it. Even then, it's often hard to ignore how it feels like a strange time bomb, waiting to explode and unleashing the next incredibly hateful witch hunt, where it's all about getting crazy instant revenge, before even proven guilty or knowing what's really going on. I'm all for calling out undeniable bullshit, crimes etc. but sometimes I was really shocked about how some things are handled over there :(

Just going by the few threads I clicked on here, while era was down yesterday, it feels much more calm and relaxed here. I could see myself using both sites from now on.
This place is way more chill/fun now. You don't have to walk on egg shells to post on here like Reset. The mods here are fantastic at their jobs and let discourse flow.

It's basically like a place now where we just sit around, have a beer and chat it up. Many of us don't care what "side" you are on. There are no ridiculous purity tests or one opinion fits all (which is then enforced by the mods). We just want to have some fun/joke around and chat it up. You won't get banned for having a sense of humor.

I mean I'd read your reply if you wanted to post it. That shit was just intolerable though. And I even broke my rule of lending a click to a clearly alt-right/garbage human YouTube video! You can't say I didn't try.
Hm? You have evidence to show that he is alt-right, or are you making a baseless accusation? Is he garbage for his actions or for having an opinion that differs from yours? You stated you didn't watch the video so how would you know? Honestly, you are just further proving the point of the video and are a perfect caricature of RE.

It's a video clearly about to chastise "triggers and safe spaces," which is right out the alt-right playbook. I've yet to see such content that didn't veer into that realm, so yes, that was my perfectly rational assumption upon seeing the thumbnail.

I clicked it though out of respect for you, and would've watched it if not for the unbelievably annoying voice modulation.

I don't think there is any place for hate. Plenty of space for people who just don't care (or at least don't care to discuss these issues on gaming forums). But I can see to some extent why some are ok cutting out people who go into threads to say they don't care. If you don't care, don't post.

But sometimes that's a relevant thing to post for things like that CDPR tweet. It's gaming related for people to say that they just view it as some dipshit social media rep trying to be an edgelord and make bad humor with trending hashtags or gamergate references and that they'll still buy the game. That's not "downplaying transphobia," but rather just saying they didn't view it that way and will still by the game. That's just as valid an opinion as those who were bothered by it and plan to skip their games going forward. People have different standards for what they find offensive. Now if someone said "I don't care, they can tweet all the transphobic stuff they want and I'll still be there day one," I can see why they should be shown the door at a site focused on building a community that's welcoming marginalized populations.

Also, one can ignore politics with something banal like gaming and discussing games and still be involved in the real world where actions make a difference. Being a keyboard warrior on a game forum, especially one that's heavily skewed to one side, is going to have no impact vs. things like voting, helping getting out the vote, volunteering, donating, writing/calling your reps and so on.

But in any case, I'm 40 and focused on enjoying my life to the fullest as life is damn short. I stay informed, vote (and always left) and donate. But that's the extent of it for me and I wish I could go back to my 20s and not waste so much time and energy having been a keyboard warrior online then. I can't recall changing a single person's mind on anything, much less seeing any of the people on the other side move left in their overall worldview. Maybe if it's a site with more teens/early 20 somethings, but that generation is mostly on social media and Reddit and not traditional forums and people's general world view is often pretty set by the mid 20s and beyond. Much less the ones who post a lot about political stuff online as those tend to be extremists rather than moderates.

I post at both places. Probably at Era more often, probably, but not based on any kind of bias/preference, just the simple fact that things seem more active there (pure quanitity of threads and posts). But I'd love to see this place grow as well.

Never been banned at either (though got a "warning" at Era once for participating in the thread on "problematic female character designs".

I kind of take a more "centrist" stance on the subject- basically a lot of these characters a are made to appeal to the male audience and why should they be denied what they want- if you enjoy games with that kind of art- buy those games. Don't like them- don't buy the games, etc., and if enough don't buy them, the devs won't make them that way anymore, and adhere to market desires. Hey, agree with me on the subject, or don't. I can take it.

But my mistake for thinking they were promoting discussion on a subject when the stance made by the zeitgeist was clearly- "these provocative females designs are bad and obscene and lets talk about how wrong they are for EVERYONE." And any dissenting opinion was pretty much warning/ban fodder. And I'll admit, this happens a lot over there where certain subject matter is concerned.

Anyway, I really don't look to make waves, I bowed out of the thread, and expressed no more opinion on the matter, since doing so was clearly asking for trouble. I really just want to talk about games and not get too crazy about stuff.

If the lot of the folks that all stopped posting at Oct 25, 2017 are only coming back to make commentaries like these without participating in interaction, then what's the point of posting then?

Nothing has changed? You should have looked better. Heck, you should have just actually looked to see it.

I can only make assumptions to what former self you refer to. Either way, if you just want a ban, you don't have to publically making it known: A simple PM or e-mail would be suffice.

Mind you, to each and every single one of the dissenters i have offered an olive branch and a option to a proper conversation regarding this place. And so far, all i hear is an accusation but nothing indepth.

So you have zero evidence and are making a baseless accusation. Funny you would call him a garbage person as I would think someone who makes baseless accusations of racism/sexism/transphobia/alt-right are much worse. But that may just be me. Peace :messenger_peace:

Let's be honest If you are on Resetera you are on the REAL NEOGAF.

Resetera took the heart and soul of GAF in the divorce. I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at here but it sure ain't GAF.

Now perhaps to some of you that's a good thing.
Well Era is full of hive minded maniacs, where free thought and opinion results in dog piling and a temp ban. Shower of bastards really.

I think the issue with the CDPR tweet in particular was that it wasn't the first time it happened. The first time many did give them the benefit of the doubt. The second time as well, though more people were starting to be suspicious. The most recent tweet was the "third strike" for many though, which is totally understandable to me. Especially if you're a trans person.

IAlso, one can ignore politics with something banal like gaming and discussing games and still be involved in the real world where actions make a difference. Doesn't have to be one or the other! I voted for George W. Bush in 2004, right before I joined the U.S. Army. I was as conservative as they came. My views gradually shifted as I read more and more evidence proving my views incorrect (right here on GAF, of all places). Even if the poster being replied to never backs down, that doesn't mean the reply will have no effect on the potentially thousands of different individuals who will see it. All of it matters to a varying degree.
