Aonuma: Zelda Wii U will challenge series conventions.

For Nintendo change in the Zelda series isn't: "Let's change all the fundamentals of what makes Zelda, Zelda" it's more about adding new items, new gameplay, new boss types etc.
Changing all the fundamentals would make the game something completely different from Zelda. So why not make it a different IP, to cultivate both without risking to alienate the existing fanbase of one of their biggest properties?
I think they'll go further on the road of blurring the difference between overworld and dungeons, and mixing up item usage. Which is one of the things I liked most in Skyward Sword.

In the latest Iwata asks they said that they could base an entire Zelda around the
Time shift stones
I agree, they should do that.
As much as I loved this mechanic, it would probably have overstayed its welcome in a full game based on it. I hope to see it back, though, together with a mechanic that expands on the
Silent Realms by keeping the tense chases while going beyond simply collecting tears (even though relying on the player's knowledge of the environment in SS was quite smart)
.

Mhm. SS is the first game where it was actually a problem. Although, in my opinion, the bigger problem was Link's silence while flapping his lips and waving his arms.
I agree. Frame him from behind, use smart cuts not to have to show him at all. His random, overacted gestures looked off as well.

There is no "voice acting would be wrong for Zelda". This is a myth created by weirdo Zelda fanthings who cringe at the thought of Zelda being anything but OoT. Times change.

Be that as it may, I see Zelda as minimalistic on story and heavy on gameplay. Starting with the 3D Zeldas, truth be told, I've since been annoyed with how many cutscenes there are. In a game like Metal Gear it's to be expected, or in Final Fantasy because it's a story heavy, dialogue heavy RPG.

But with Zelda I just like to start it up and get questing without any bullshit. So when I think of a Zelda having voice acting, even if it were good which it wouldn't be, if they take the time to have voice acting it would mean that there's going to be more dialogue and more cutscenes than ever. I do not wish this upon Zelda.

I'm loving the hell out of Skyward Sword, but so far it's been the biggest offender in this department so far. Also these shitty as shit sidekick characters need to stop.

Shadow of the Colossus was pretty close to being the perfect reinterpretation of Zelda. Maybe involve some "discovering" upgrades of the items you use in the game while navigating the world and have Link
turn into Gannon in order to bring Zelda back to life buy killing the Collossus' that guard the final peice of the tri-force
and it's good.

So aside from somehting that drastic, I'd prefer something simple with no gimmicks and great graphics/mechanics please. I come to Nintendo for the classics.

I got major Colossus vibes while playing Skyward. The beacons, certain music, The Imprisoned, even the collecting insects/items.

I fear voice acting because I'm afraid that the English localization would go with the campy english accent 'm'lord' WRPG garbage.

Honestly I'd like it if they had full voice acting...but spoke a made up 'Hylian' language with subtitles. Kind of like the made-up language for the Nier soundtrack, that's how I imagine Hylian to sound.

Link should remain a silent protagonist though.

I'd accept voice acting if the dialog writer was Brian Mitsoda (thoughts on bad VA halfway down in this interview).

And please, no cop outs with alien languages. Hearing the same five phrases of alien speak in every KotOR race and the faux-Mandarin in Jade Empire got boring very quickly, as did Midna's speak in TP. And the two earlier examples had language experts helping out with constructing proper grammar etc., it still didn't work.

After Skyward Sword I trust them to do what ever they want, I was thinking the other day - there really is nothing wrong with keeping Link silent ala Gordon Freeman but why not have most of the NPCs voiced?

I just want the game cel shaded on the level of WW. It can change the style. I would love the game to look like this in game or something like it.

Aonuma should just hand it over to Fumito Ueda.

Sure, we wont see the game till 2020, but it would be an amazing game.

I hope he means in terms of level design and structure rather than doing something stupid like using the U Pad as a shield.

It would if it was good.

Yes. It would be good if it was good.
Do you ....play modern video games? How many studios do good voice acting? And I mean actually good, not "only mildly cringeworthy". Maybe Naughty Dog and Valve? Plus lets not forget Nintendo's last foray into voice acting: Metroid: Other M

I dunno, maybe they could experiment with it on a handheld Zelda, so it wouldn't be such a big deal when the first time was shit.

The Wu Pad will be used as Lens of Truth to find things you can't normally see on your TV. Mark my words.

Na. Full blown cel shading like WW. I would love to see it like an interactive cartoon.
I thought you were also talking about the painted artstyle used for the background.

EDIT: vvvvvv Wow, that's pretty much what I meant.

2/1 that Nintendo use the U pad for the next Midna/Fi companion.

It will be like a mirror mirror on the wall type thing, you can ask it for advice, and it'll shout at you if you take longer than 2 minutes on a puzzle.

I guess it can also act as shield, same way as Fi is in the sword.

Not played Skyward Sword yet so can't contribute on that front.

But looking at Nintendo's broader franchises, the idea of using the tablet as an interface for Samus' suit, giving access to the mapping systems, weapons controls, energy distribution levels, radar and even using it to download ancient Chozo archives to sift through at my leisure, is tantalising. It could really add to the tension too, knowing that while we check this information the world does not pause on the big screen, emphasising the need to find somewhere safe.

That would be an exciting change of conventions, hope Retro is already on it.

Ok lets take Skyward Sword:

* Add a world as big as Windwakers to the Clouds.
* Add Analoguecontrols (Theres no other way with WiiU)
* Create Musical Themes that are as memorable as the ones in previous Zeldas
* Natural Day/Night cycle
* More varied Themes and no more backtracking (excluding optional backtracking to freely explore areas with new items)
* Make the World below the clouds connected
* Make it less like Outside-Temple/Inside Temple and more like a natural quest to the temple.
* Add more Zelda typical characters that are memorable like the skull kid or the windmill man.
* More varied Monsters
* No more unskippable textboxes and phi-promts

Thats about it. That would be a perfect Zelda.
Too bad that wasnt Skyward Sword

Confirmed!
- Experience points are back in a big way.
- MMO required log in after collecting the 3 pendants.
- $9.99 sub fee.
- Faerie caves are now DLC.
- Master Sword is a pre order bonus.
- Online multiplayer sword battles.
- 3 part trilogy.
- Online speed run leader boards.

this is the only thing I don't want, I would preffer some kind of shell where you can have the nunchuck and wii U controller in one hand and a wii remote in the other, I might be in the minority here but I really like when motion controlls are well implemented and I don't like to aim with analogs =/

Haven't started Skyward Sword yet so don't know how it's handled there yet, but...

Totally agree that VA could add a very welcome breath of life and depth to characters that often seem like animated dolls, with the gibberish talk.

Always assumed the safest way would be to have them speak Hylian, an approach that was generally respected when Panzer Dragoon Saga did it.

the legend of zelda wiiiu master quest edition with extra rooms in dungeons only a year later

There's one single change that will make all the difference

Make Link a kid again.

Is what made all previous games so awesome, and probably the biggest flaw of Twilight Princess (and maybe SS but I haven't played it yet).

Skyward Sword introduced some cool changes to the formula, but not really groundbreaking.
IMO, Zelda series needs its "Resident Evil 4".

YES. I figured out how bombs work 19 years ago. Stop reminding me. And stop letting me know that 20 rupees are just that.
Not that I disagree with you, but you chose two bad examples after Skyward Sword:
1. the bombs do work differently there, many had issues rolling them despite the explanation
2. you only get the 20 rupee notification once in the game (unless you find them inside a chest, but that happens with everything).

I don't see how this affects things one way or the other.

Ok I have to agree it may not be a big deal for many, but for me it really makes the adventure and sense of progression feel bigger, like starting item-less in a Metroid game facing a terrible and hostile planet. When Link is a teenager you just expect the typical generic fantasy scenario of the "chosen" hero, which is boring. But a little kid killing a giant dragon? that's epic.

I just want them to completely eliminate all of the incidental MIDI music. The orchestral stuff was incredible, but everything else is awful and detracts from the game.

I like you.

That's evil nintendo commenting on Zelda here. They are riding on SS success and WiiU Zelda before 2015 has two options : whether we get a MonsterHunterified Zelda or a Westernized Zelda.

As long as "challenge" doesn't mean "trash" conventions, then great, go for it. Gimme lots of dungeons, a great world to explore and tight controls, and I'm there.

What about a Demon's Souls-ized Zelda?

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are what I would want a 3D Zelda I and II to be. Because of that, I no longer want Nintendo to go back to the series's roots, which was a huge hope of mine for a long time. Now I just want to see them keep trying new things.
