The heirarchy of ipods goes like this:

Shuffle - For a day's playlist at the gym

Nano - For casual listeners who want an ipod cheap

Ipod - For music lovers to take their entire collection everywhere

Touch doesn't have a clear music-centric niche.

i play seven instruments, go to at least one concert per week, have 250gb of music on an external harddrive, and have a shuffle. guess i'm not a music lover

Whats with all the hate for the iPod touch, I kind of like it. I'm fine with 16gb.

IT IS SHIT. got it? 16GB is nothing, and a touch screen is not worth that price.

i am seriously burning here >:O

It's going to be chaos at the apple stores today. The phones will probably be sold out by the time I can get there unless they stocked up.

Indeed, very interesting. Do they normally just replace the dollar sign for a Euro sign? 400 Euro for a 8gb Iphone is actually a competitive price in that segment, imo.

Gaming companies do :lol

Question--- do 5th gen ipod videos get a firmware update? For coverflow? and the cool UI upgrade we saw in the new nano?

$399 8GB iPhone? Ouch! The sounds of early adopters crying will be drowned out by the screams of angry customers unable to find one in stores.

I think i'd be willing to pay $250 for a 32GB memory stick and just use my PSP for everything. Its music interface is kinda shitty, but at least it would do everything I want.
I'm resigned to the fact that I probably need at least two portable devices for the forseeable future, because no one is going to effectively combine a full-on cellphone with a dedicated game machine anytime soon. Everything else is getting converged into one or the other.

And a $200 drop on the 8gb iPhone with the upcoming Wifi iTMS support is pretty much what I was looking for. Happening quicker than I expected it to.

That didn't say you didn't like music, just that the iPod shuffle's not exactly for someone who wants to be listening to music 24/7 :p

I'm not saying this just because I've been a Mac user my entire life, and my dad works for Apple and all, but they really do some brilliant stuff sometimes. This Christmas, it's an Apple Christmas.

Yea i wish they would have the phone for every carrier, it is gonna suck to have a huge pda phone and a huge mp3 player in one pocket. Damn why is spring so cheap.....

Btw, has anything been unveiled concerning the European Iphone launch yet?
Apple does that, PLUS hike the price.

I expect a €450 iPhone price

So is there a new 16 GB ipgone that will be $600?

This is all sooo SONY/PS3...

THE ONLY WAY apple can make this price drop up to early adoptors is to take their $600 iphone back and send them the new 16 GB iphone.

i'm OUT. just called my local apple store. and the iphone price drop is confirmed... and they have them in stock. :lol

Will the current iPod Video get a firmware update to allow coverflow?
:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

Apple only updates the firmware of old iPod models to patch major bugs. The 5g firmware doesn't even have the search feature included in the 5.5g fw.

Well you'd also need to buy the AT&T contract with the iPhone.
Not since 2-3 weeks ago :D

How about the sounds of eBay scalpers who will be eating a $200 loss on every unit they've purchased?

anyone willing to pay 400 dollars for the Itouch, is going to have more than 16gb of music. Not to mention you can pay the same price and get a phone with the same features. Such a rip

Okay, fuck iPod Touch.......$400 iphone wins (especially considering they will probably have refurbished ones for $300).

Up until this point, I was going to say that they had done a great job of balancing their product line and making sure that no single product overwhelms another. But now they've pretty much killed the 16gb iPod Touch. Sure it's got twice as much capacity as the iPhone, but if you're going to have to capacity either way you might as well get the one that has a phone included.

So, how do you unlock an iPhone again?

Dude you're forgetting the part where the iPhone is... a phone. I won't switch to ATT, EVER. And plus, even if I was willing to switch, I'm not able to for another 8 months or so.

There are millions and millions of iPod owners in the same position, I'm sure. Just as I'm sure there are millions and millions of iPods given as GIFTS given every year - you think someone is going to give someone a phone as an xmas gift - "here you go - your present is a big monthly bill!"

This is just irritating to me because I honestly believe that there are too many models out right now. I'd really just have rather had Apple not even announce the iPod Touch, and upgrade the iPhone with a price drop. Like, because seriously, who the hell is going to buy an iPod Touch when you can get one with a phone, email apps, etc. for the same price? Besides, at 16 gigs you're probably STILL going to have to manage what music you have on your iPod through your computer, so why not get the phone in it with all the added features? Bah.

Which phones have a touch screen with multitouch, WiFi, and 16GB of storage?

the same price? what in the fuck are you talking about? how many people do you think want to pay the 8 billion/month phone bill?

Actually, I was specifically thinking of Esbern when i wrote it. It was a really subtle jab at his insufficient love of music.

So we have a...

- iPod Nano: Super thin, Plays video, Cheap as fuck
- iPod Shuffle: New Colors. F-
- iPod Classic: Huge ass storage. Good price and sexy.
- iPod Touch: iPhone minus the Phone, with double the biggest iPhones capacity for $400
- iPhone: $200 cheaper (Megaton. Seriously.)
- iTunes Wireless: Bullshit. Who cares? I don't.

Edit: I am not disappointed, because now I can get an iPHONE. Fuck the iPod Touch. But still, I want this:

- iChat. Where the fuck are you?
- 3G. Where the fuck are you?
- No Beatles? Who cares, but some people I'm sure do.

The new iPhone price helps existing AT&T customers out a lot. It's only $20 a month to upgrade your existing plan to work with the iPhone and you get unlimited data and visual voicemail but a shitty 200 SMS.

Oh, please do shutup. You're getting damn boring. You dont like it, we get it. Im sure millions of others will. I have an 8GB nano that has more than enough capacity for me, and Id love the new features of the touch. Its not solely a music player anymore, and the price reflects that. If you were expecting more flashstorage than that.. well you would be a little insane. You're 'burning'? Get a life. Noone is forcing you to buy the damn thing.

A phone comes with a contract.

I have an absolute shit tonne of music (100GB+), but all the stuff i regularly listen to doesnt even fill a 4GB nano.

Plus the extra features you get are badass. 16gb is more then enough for me

You don't have to switch to AT&T anymore :) With the unlocking stuff, I'm not even sure if you have to use it as a phone anymore.

And the number of people giving $400 iPods to people is probably not in the millions. The iPhone compromises the 16gb iPod touch's position in the market, but not much else. If refurbished iPhones are still receiving a $100 discount, that blows the 8gb iPod touch away as well though (refurbished iPhone for the same price as iPod Touch, plus phone functionality).

one thing the ipod touch is good for is the non-US market.

also, there's more and more of those "internet-tablet" devices (nokia/sony/ds/psp), so the touch is a good way to enter into that product category

Having to pay the ETF with my mobile provider and a new 2 year contract with AT&T is a added feature that I DO NOT WANT. ; P
