There's a pretty good chance they'll wait until MacWorld to release it in the states.

Whenever it happens--and I bought my iPhone a week ago now--I'm picking this up day one. Edge is just barely good enough for me, but now that my wife and I are on different carriers, we really both may as well have iPhones. So she'll get my 8GB iPhone and I'll get the 16GB 3G iPhone and we'll start a little family plan :D

Since Richmond VA still doesn't have 3G, I'm fine with Edge. I pretty much have to be.

Podcasts in iTunes is weird. Even when I would tell it not to sync large video podcasts it would copy the file over anyway taking up space but not showing in the podcasts menu. Has anyone else had that or have I fucked up somewhere?

Since this has devolved into an iTunes discussion, I shall ask a question. This isn't an issue I deal with, since I have my own PC, but my mom, her husband, and my step sister are all currently sharing one PC after lightning disposed of their other one.

Anyway, they want separate music libraries, does iTunes under Windows support multiple libraries based on Windows account? The step sister has her own un-passworded account on the PC, but my mom and her husband use the password-protected Administrator account on this XP machine.

Is there anyway I can set up iTunes to see two separate libraries for each account? The apple site is being no help.

Seems this might help.

Multiple accounts, one computer

The easiest way to manage this all may be to have individual Windows accounts for everyone. That way every family member will have his or her own iTunes library, iTunes Store account, etc.

Just got back from Best Buy with my 80GB Classic. I was leaning towards the nano but its far too small. I was pretty surprised to see how thin the classic was. Anyone else get one?

This might work: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173. If that's not it, I'm sure there's a method simpler than you're expecting.

As someone else already said, this is all because of the music companies and their lovely ideas for digital rights management that treat consumers as criminals before they're treated as customers. You just have to live getting around the DRM and having restricted music management.

For me though, I've never had an issue with how iTunes does things, and I think Apple did a pretty good job keeping the DRM simple and transparent. I would never buy their DRMed shit from their online store, but it's slick at dealing with the mp3s I already have. There are a lot of benefits that go along with the way iTunes does things, like automatically saving your place from computer to iPod back to your computer on audiobooks, movies or podcasts. You keep play ratings, descriptions, and tags across all devices. You can keep your music organized easily in one place in the program even though it may be scattered all across hard drives and networks. Podcasts automatically update and download in iTunes and automatically sync to iPods without you having to do anything.

Drag and drop would be nice just to have the option, but the way iTunes keeps everything clean and transparent works for me. Add everything you have to iTunes, make a playlist, drop things into that playlist, and sync it. Pretty much just like drag and drop except it has that extra step of having to sync.

Thanks, I'll give that a try when the time comes.

I just put about 500 songs on my iphone and its fucking awesome. Surfing while listening to music all while taking a dump>*

Ipod have never had memory expansion, and will never HAVE memory expansion. Accept it and live on, whether you choose to buy one, or not. Cant believe people still bitch about this.
no i'll still get a few for myself because i can afford it, and get the newer iterations w/ more memory when they are out, one in each color for different days of the week. i just wasnt aware of the design constraints posed by steve.

so you're getting the nano then? that's kinda neat!

The screen is really high res, its pretty nice.

Wow! Looks nice. Didn't even think to look for them at Best Buy when i was there earlier. Can't wait to see it in black too. Leaning so heavily towards picking one of these up with the $100 Early Adopter iPhone Credit. (AKA: The iGotScrewed Credit!) :D

The best buy I got it at didnt have the Nano's in, but they did have one on show. The classic was only available in white until they get the black shipment in.

As you can see its considerably thinner than the Razr. The silver color isnt as bad as you might think. The promo pictures make it look awful but its quite nice actually. Can anyone recommend me a good holder for the ipod? I dont want to screw the screen up in my pocket or anything.

Anyone have experience with FM Transmitters for iPods (just the quality of sound)? (its a device for cars that don't have an Auxiliary port that a jack into). It (obviously) transmits the music from the iPod over an FM station wirelessly. I want to do this instead of using a tape deck (since listening to MP3s over a tape signal kills the sound quality).

Theres also actually getting a modern radio but I want to get a cheap transmitter for now.

*And I would have bought a Nano for myself this weekend but my local Best Buy didn't have any either :(

Most people will tell you that the FM Transmitters sound WORSE than using one of the tape adapters. In fact, I've heard mostly good things about sound quality over the cassette tape adapters.

I probably have to get a better cassette tape adapter then (cause the one I have currently isn't very good). I'm actually thinking about pulling the radio out and bypassing the radio by splitting the speaker wire and having it hang out to a female connector (just for the iPod) :lol

I'll look into better ones

They suck - all of them. The only way to make them not suck is to add wiring to your car to receive the signal on a specific frequency. I have fought with 5 of these solutions over time and they were all complete shit - I've given away all but 2 of them. 2 weeks ago I discovered an old Sony tapedeck unit and thought "well it used to serve me well, though people keep complaining that they make noise".... I popped into the deck and attached it to my iPod and it is beyond excellent.

Short form: FM Transmitters SUCK. Unless your radio reception was already shit or you live in a town that has large swaths of available spectrum that isn't already receiving a signal. In Atlanta, there are NO channels that aren't already broadcasting so the FM Transmitter is competing with terrestrial broadcast towers and an antenna designed to receive signal from THEM.

Totally depends where you live and how much interference is around you. I have a griffin itrip auto that works fantastic in Richmond is crap in Washington dc. I think I'm going to get a new stereo with a line in jack for my iphone.

Are there any comparison pics of the new Classics next to the old G5 (or whichever the last gen was)? I'm really finding it hard to believe the Classic is an improvement in terms of looks but 120gb is so tempting.

They come in 80 and 160 GB models, with 160 GB being even more tempting. ;)

Verdict: Cassette Wins.... FLAWLESS VICTORY!

Agreed, I still use one as well. Though I've noticed that my iPhone causes a decent amount of static/distortion after a few minutes. Boo. (Running it through a Belkin amp, power supply)

the classic does look really nice. How is it, sizewise, compared to a 5G Video? Anybody know or have pics?
iPod Video (5G)

30GB model

* Height: 103.5 mm (4.1 inches)
* Width: 61.8 mm (2.4 inches)
* Depth: 11 mm (0.43 inches)
* Weight: 136 grams (4.8 ounces)

80GB model

* Height: 103.5 mm (4.1 inches)
* Width: 61.8 mm (2.4 inches)
* Depth: 14 mm (0.55 inches)
* Weight: 157 grams (5.5 ounces)

iPod Classic (6G)

80GB model

* Height: 103.5 mm (4.1 inches)
* Width: 61.8 mm (2.4 inches)
* Depth: 10.5 mm (0.41 inch)
* Weight: 140 grams (4.9 ounces)

160GB model

* Height: 103.5 mm (4.1 inches)
* Width: 61.8 mm(2.4 inches)
* Depth: 13.5 mm (0.53 inch)
* Weight: 162 grams (5.7 ounces)

Dimensions for all are the same except for depth.
80GB Classic is 3.5mm thinner than the 80GB Video, and .5mm thinner than the 30GB Video.

I saw that, but does it automatically have separate libraries for each windows account? When I open iTunes in the two windows accounts on my mom's PC it shows the same library. Hmmm, need to do more detective work.
When you have multiple accounts in Windows, it's supposed to create separate profiles.
Let's John Smith and Jane Doe have their own account on a PC.
In XP, their profile folders would at C:\Documents and Settings\jsmith and C:\Documents and Settings\jdoe
In Veeeeesta, they'd be at C:\Users\jsmith and C:\Users\jdoe

Within those profiles, there are standard subfolders (documents, pictures, music).

By default, iTunes creates its folder within the (My) Music subfolder.

So if jsmith logs in to an XP box and starts iTunes, it should look at C:\Documents and Settings\jsmith\My Documents\My Music\iTunes

To do:
Make sure each user habitually logs in and out (OR uses switch user, if available) so that User1 doesn't use User2's account and vice versa.
Make each user has their own profile folder.
Check Edit > Preferences > Advanced > iTunes Music folder location so that it points to the currently logged in user's profile.

Sometimes I turn on wireless and look for devices, and then remember I have a Zune and I'm delusional.

Ditto, my friend. Ditto. *Squints acquising eyes at Zune sitting on the edge of computer table*

I am sorry Zune it just didn't work out between us.

Not to turn this into a Zune bitchfest thread or anything, but MS is really screwing the pooch on such a potential product. On top of that they keep pushing the "we can't share any details yet" bullshit on Zune 2 or firmware updates. Throw us a bone, you know? Give us something to wet our beeks with and give us a reason to keep this damn brick.

I'm not really saying this guy is at fault, but it is a good place to voice your frustrations:

Can someone tell me when's the last time Apple refreshed the iPod line? If I have to wait till fall 08 for a 32Gb Touch I'll just get the 16Gb now, but if there's a possibility of a refresh mid/early next year I might as well wait. Didn't they refresh the iPods in Q1 this year?

Check here, will tell you the exact dates and average time between updates etc: http://guides.macrumors.com/iPod_Buyer's_Guide

Now would probably be the best time to buy.

This all depends on when 32GB of flash is cheap enough for Apple to use.

Is there a site out there that has prices of flash memory? I wonder how much Apple is paying right now for the 16GB chips?

I was kidding. I'm sure he still loves his Zune and he's waiting impatiently for Zune 2. After all, it means he can get a couple of more tattoos! :)

This guy! :)

That's disgusting in multiple ways. Thanks!

On a more positive note, I sucked it up and made my big order from Apple tonight: a 80GB Classic and a Shuffle for the gym.

Gonna buy the 16gig itouch ipod.

Should I:

Preorder from apple or wait to get it instore.

I want it the day it comes out and don't wanna preorder and be in some shipping delay/shortage fiasco and I don't wanna be standing in line when I could have had it delivered.

Which route should I take?

Except when the cassette deck in your vehicle rejects the adapters. And constantly tries to flip to the other side of the cassette or just plain spits it out.

FM transmitters will work regardless.

And 87.7 CAN'T be broadcast to, so use that. Hell, I use it in LOS ANGELES just fine.
