Sure it's (artificially) crippled compared to the iPhone's calendar functionality, but it's not like you could ever create events on any of the past iPods either..

No but the interface to do so was not really there, typing things on a click wheel would have been god-awful. Now you have a built in keyboard, there's no excuse not to bring in the functionality, although I do realize they may have gotten rid of the keyboard entirely save for safari.

Personally, I'm going to take a wait and see approach to see what happens.

Holy shit guys, does iTunes really suck this bad?

I can't import folders that have playlists in them without having it import the files twice?

Anyone know how to get around this? You'd think there would be an "ignore m3u when copying into library" checkbox, but no...this really fricking sucks :(

I think I had this issue with Winamp. Never knew how to rid the duplicate listings out of the library (even a complete Winamp reinstall did nothing). I also had this issue with iTunes.

If you are using a Mac im pretty sure you can get an iTunes script which removes duplicate library items
It's built in now I think, highlights them all and you can select which you delete manually. I did this to keep all my live Hendrix and higher bit rate versions of songs.

I think they're finally selling the new Nanos at my local Best Buy. I may pick one up today (and just completely have it replace my shuffle...its definitely small enough).

I pre-ordered the 16 GB touch in Canada. After taxes, shipping and the Canadian Markup (fitty bucks), it came out to be 125 dollars more than it would cost me if I bought it in the states, which is fucking ridiculous. I'll just pick it up the next time I am in the States.

There should be no shipping charge.

Beware if you have a different kit though - I hear that some kits have no alternate mode and the iPod controls (and UI!) are completely locked out, making those nearly unusable...it seems that some docking kits for audio receivers, etc. are also affected.
So wait a sec, you don't have the option to choose playlists from the steering wheel controls either way? The kit that I have in the car, only lets you browse the music through the steering wheel - but you can do anything you can do on the ipod (playlists/artists/genre, etc.). However, ipod itself is locked into "accessory attached" mode - I'm talking about the previoous gen Ipod here btw. I'm perfectly fine with that kind of control - so is the new Ipod (presumably Ipod Touch as well) usable this way at all?

I have to say, the more I look at this iPod touch the more I want it. I've been dropping major hints to my wife that my birthday is coming up and the touch would be a nice "touch". :D The video demos I've seen are damn sexy.

I preordered the 16gig itouch from the apple store.
A few questions:

Videos can only be played in landscape mode not portrait?

Can you browse videos in CoverFlow mode?

I use PSPVideo9 to convert my vids to MP4. But I am looking for a video converter that can:
CONVERT TO MP4
CROP FRAMES
PREVIEW MODE SO I CAN SEE WHAT VID WILL LOOK LIKE WITH CROP ALSO
CONVERT THIS NEW FANGLED MKV & M2V FORMAT
AND HAVE ALL THE BASIC CHOICES - AUDIO & VIDEO QUALITY, ETC.

Doesn't have to be free if it does all of these features i will buy.
Thanks

Correct (on the iPhone, anyway), unless you're watching streaming Quicktimes from the web in Safari -- which can be played in either. But trust me, you're gonna wanna view all your video in landscape.

Can you browse videos in CoverFlow mode?

No. Videos don't show up in Coverflow currently. I'm on a Mac so I've been using FFmpegX to convert my videos. But it's not free.

Looking for info from anyone who has a new Classic and watches fansubs.

Is the screen big enough and a suitable resolution to watch Bleach fansubs? Can you see the subtitles?

No, the steering wheel controls still work - my kit does not display track info so the fact that the UI is locked out is extremely annoying. The steering wheel controls are a very limited subset for me, too...

Until the Touch comes out we won't know for sure - I think the iPhone doesn't work (at all?) with many car kits as well.

What's the current capacity in the nand flash memory being used in iPods? Is 16Gb the limit right now or is it just what Apple decided to go with in the Touch because of cost of the memory?

Very quick turnaround from Apple - my 80GB classic that I ordered yesterday just arrived via FedEx. :D It's a fair bit smaller than I expected.

I am flip-flopping back and forth. 80GB Classic or 16GB Touch.

I am fine with my 30GB Video, so I feel like getting a Classic isn't an upgrade enough, but the Touch...the Touch would be an awesome upgrade fo sho.

If you don't need 80gigs of space I say get the Touch. Apparently hackers will be all over it soon after its release. Sounds like a decent investment. I might wait for an upgrade to 32gigs though.

I just got my 160gb iPod today (black) :D It's so beautiful =P

Leaning towards this exact model when I get my $100 early adopter credit from Apple for my iPhone. The battery life has me drooling for extended trips without a place to charge.

Any pics?

Just got my 160gig classic. Ironically i dropped(for about the 100th time, seriously no lie) my 30gig video today on concrete the case seperated i popped it back in and it kept playing And justice for all without any hitch. :lol
I got silver, seeing the black in person it didnt have the same effect of the old style.

will the touch be soldout? i mean is there a need to actually pre-order? i am not in the geek phase of getting things day 1 anymore, so i could wait. but i would like to walk in on launch day and get myself one.

The iPhone wasn't sold out, and there was infinitely more hype for that thing.

Even though I just got an iPhone and have a 1G Nano, I would absolutely buy the new Nano if it had a clip on it like the Shuffle does. I know that'd kill the idea of it being like a millimeter thin, but seriously it's just the perfect size and shape to clip it on my belt like a pager.

Wait, on that last note, do they make cases like that? Where you slide the iPod into it and it has a clip on the back? I might get one for my iPhone if they do...

You couldn't preorder the iPhone ;)

If the 2G Shuffle could sell-out on pre-orders alone, the Touch almost definitely will.

Can anyone recomend me a program to transfer playlists from my old ipod to my new ipod? I have copypod, but its too slow and bloated for this. I have a lot of really long playlists so i would rather not have to redo them manually.

Your playlists automatically sync back to your computer, so it's just a matter of docking the new iPod to your current library.

No, i know that. My problem is im on my laptop, my desktop main drive died and i havent gotten around to getting a new one. And i have made playlists on the old ipod without making it on a computer first.
And i dont sync anyway, syncing is for newbs :P

Aren't you special?

So let me get this straight. The new iPods don't organize cover flow by album? It took a movie soundtrack which has various artists and made each song its own cover because they were different artists on the same album. That's retarded.

I refuse to believe that there's no way to adjust that on an iPod when it's pretty easily done in iTunes.

I mean, that's just a glaring flaw.

Anyone who actually calls someone a newb for SYNCING THEIR iPOD should be shot and killed.

Go into iTunes and make the album a compilation. (select all tracks, right-click and Get Info)

<3 My Nano

I turned off Syncing cause its ANNOYING

Also, I encoded a DVD I made of my sisters birthday to MPEG4 with ease with ImTOO MP4 Video Converter. 600MB vid file down to 300 (could probably get it smaller). Looks fantastic on the little screen.

"Cover Flow" is cool too

Quick question - I received my new 80GB in the mail yesterday, and I'm wondering if my old car charger and dock that I used for my 3G 20GB iPod can still be used with my new iPod classic. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't, but I don't want to make a huge mistake and fry my new iPod.

Everything I have read is that many of the old accessories don't work with the new iPods. So, I would call Apple to be sure.

This does not work - there was a corresponding setting on the older iPods as I understand it, but this option seems to be missing on the new iPods (it is not there on the Classic)

I've only heard that about the external video screens and other video out options for the iPod Video.

Oh! And I guess Apple knows how to generate buzz. Here we are, more than a week after the announcements, and this thread is still going pretty strong.

Ok, thanks. Wikipedia said that the old firewire stuff will work for charging, but not for moving data, which I'd be fine with. As long as my dock and car charger work, that'll be enough for me. I'll confirm with Apple before plugging them in, though.

I've had success in changing the "Album Artist" to be the same on all the files. That cleared up all my stray tunes and put them in the right place.

Doesn't work. It's already set like that. Under the album category it's fine, but under cover flow, it sets up each track as its own album. Really annoying.
