Can someone explain to me what an iPad digital magazine could do that a well-coded website in Flash could not with embedded videos and animations?

Work properly on an iPad for starters.

It works on my iPhone, but the user actions aren't done properly.

It's a good reminder of how stupid it is to have Photoshop-on-touch-tablet or Flash games on your wishlist. A cursor doesn't exist. You can't mouseover, and touch gestures can be misinterpreted as a system-wide generic gestures like scrolling the page.

Apple has a patent on a proximity-based multitouch screen technology. Rolling that into the touch-based product lines in the future would be awesome.

One problem I have with the iPhone is that I can't save dirct links like podcasts. Will I be able to do that with the iPad?
You can if you go into the iTunes store and search for the podcast there.

Edit: Like so:

You guys may laugh but after many years of hating IE, it's now my most used browser next to safari. The others are too bloated (firefox) or have too many quirks (chrome). Both IE and Safari are fast and reliable, everything works on them.

There was a time when IE sucked, it's long past. It's a much better browsing experience than firefox or opera.

IE7/8 doesn't support HTML5 out of the box without the Chrome add-on.

Also, Firefox is pretty good with 3.6. I'm using the Mac version, and if you don't clog it up with hundreds of add-ons, and only the ones you actually need, it's runs just fine.

It always amazes me when people who seem to know better still use IE. What we need to do is, if people are wanting to use it, smack their hands, say "NO!", and keep doing it until they learn what they're doing is wrong.

Guys, I need an iPod Touch.

What do you guys think? Buy an iPad, the next generation iPhone (in July), or the next generation iPod (in September)?

I just don't know how I could justify paying so much for an iPhone each month.

Problem is, especially on the Windows side, every application and its mother wants you to install an add-on.

Then decline to install it.

I love my ipod touch, but I don't have a pressing need to have an iphone. I tend to change phones often, and I can focus on using that for calls etc. Ipod touch is 1000% worth it for the apps alone, adn you get a great ipod built in too.

I'm buying an ipad for use at home, I'd consider it a partner to an ipod touch - I wouldn't expect to take an ipad with me, but the ipod touch is a little small to use around the house for any length of time.

who cares about html 5 at this point? be realistic.

More grist for the "what is the Apple A4 chip" speculation mill:

Paul Boutin (Wired, Wall Street Journal, VentureBeat) has been goading chip sources into spilling some detail about the chip. Here:

http://venturebeat.com/2010/02/06/apple-a4-cooler-battery/

The most interesting update to the story is this:

Update: A very trusted source tells me:

PA Semi didn’t do the A4. It was the existing VLSI team. Apple has made custom chips for years like the Northbridges for G4 and G5.

I'll call it: Courier isn't ever coming out.

Showing off prototypes and hype videos is dumb.

Yes and no.

It's irritating as a consumer seeing stuff like that and not having it come out ever, or years later.

But it did its job, even if it's not a real product. How many people referenced it saying it's what they expected the iPad to be and such. "Damage" done.

If I remember correctly, those were leaked videos and the source said they were in the late prototype phase.

Of course, it could all be bullshit like you said, but Microsoft has been wanting to be in the tablet market for years now, and after a decade of failing, Apple seems posed to make the market erupt and Microsoft wants in on that.

peacebyanymeans said:
I'm pretty sure that was a long while ago, like 2002.

I'm sure they're working on Courier still, especially after how excited everyone got over it.

Re-read what he wrote in that NYT piece:

And despite the certainty that an Apple tablet was coming this year, the tablet group at Microsoft was eliminated.

We don't know what division he's referring to, or if that division had anything to do with Courier(I don't think it did), but that doesn't read like something that happened in 2002.

Anyway, Courier is irrelevant. It won't be ready this year, and when it is ready(if it ever is), they'll be competing with a second or third revision of the iPad.

Yeah, the Surface has been out for quite a while. It ain't cheap, but it's also not just a capacitive multitouch screen on top of a giant chasis. Thing's got 5 video cameras in it.

Count me in on that list too. I'm in for 16 or 32 w/3G.

I'm quite excited about it. Contrary to most perceptions, I have been more excited about it since it was announced, not less.

I'm getting a 32/or 64 Wifi Model. We can start an owner;' thread when they are out.

I am sooooo fucking torn on getting one. Knowing that they already have the housing built to accomodate a camera and knowing that Apple always seems to make their second rev of products take a big leap (e.g. original iPod to the clickwheel version, original iPhone to the GPS/3G version) I'm inclined to wait and see.

I don't care about a camera so I'm not waiting. If you want one just hold out, or try one and see if you "need" it.

I'm with you. I don't are about the camera, and as someone said recently, do you really want a camera staring at you from a weird angle in your lap?

I'm also getting more excited about the iPad because we're starting to hear the devs talk about things and show some of the apps that will take advantage of it. Things like that comic viewer show the huge potential of the device, and I was already sold on it before hand. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

I'm with you. My opinion is if you can't see the groeth and potential just from the Apple apps demoed (Calendar, Mail, iWork) then you are completely missing out on the potential of the device.

IIRC you got an iPhone on day one (as did I) and I know enither of us ever regretted it.

Yep, I was Day 1 on the iPhone too, and now have the 3GS and love it. :)

And I agree with you about the Apple apps too. Just watching the videos from the launch day showed me the potential of this device, and seeing it in motion was far more convincing then just reading/hearing about it. And a number of people who have been hands on with the device already say that it's even better in person than on video.

+1

Although, as evidenced by Aperture 3 being rolled out today, I really should start saving for one of those new-fangled Intel-based Macs. :/

day one. 16 or 32 wifi only.

even if they bring one out in a year with a camera, I'll sell or hand mine down to the family, and buy another. I'll have had my years worth :)

If I can tether it to me iPhone, yep.

And am I crazy or did the home screen on my touch change depending on whether I was holding it vertical or horizontal? My 3GS sure doesn't but I could have sworn my gen 1 touch did and I can't figure out a reason why they'd remove that.

I'm in. Getting a 16GB 3G.

That's my plan, too. It will probably be the only way my parents will ever successfully send an email.

As already noted, I'm in of course, but I want the 64GB WiFi model. No need for the 3G, especially since I'm sure it will be tethered eventually if I need it, and I think I'll want plenty of storage on the thing
