good to know that even apple can still fuck consumers in the ass... the one thing the ipad did was fuck over existing ebook customers
As a Kindle owner, I can get access to all my books on the iPad via the Kindle App.

It'd be interesting to see if Amazon takes down it's Kindle app out of protest or something dumb like that. It was all fun and games until Apple came out with a competing product.

Why? It's using existing formats, and it doesn't use e-ink so any other e-reader you own still has a valid reason to exist.

And while publishers are hoping it'll stop Amazon pillaging their margins, increased competition and a wider market may actually drive prices down for customers.

A couple of iPads have leaked :O

They have no reason to remove it, but I won't be surprised if Apple removes it from the App store.

Why would they remove something that adds value to their product? They know they're not going to be the only fish in town for eBooks, and they chose not to enter the market for a reason. I'm gonna wager their need to push iPads far exceeds their need to monopolize eBooks on their platform.

I was referencing Amazon having their app taken off the App Store.

Basically allows their products to move off the shelves without having to buy their hardware. I'd imagine they make a ton more money on books eventually than they do devices, but Amazon doesn't seem like they're playing smart or nice these days.

Why wouldn't there be surprise at this?

Because the only difference between Kindle app and Google Voice app is that Kindle app came out before its iPhone OS equivalent. I wouldn't be very surprised if Apple resisted a full 10" Kindle app for iPad (I doubt they will, because it's really in their best long term interest to allow it).

Apple's FCC rationalization about Google Voice, emphasis changed to books.

The application has not been approved because, as submitted for review, it appears to alter the iPad’s distinctive user experience by replacing the iPad's core mobile book reading functionality and Apple user interface with its own user interface for browsing, purchasing, and reading books. Apple spent a lot of time and effort developing this distinct and innovative way to seamlessly deliver core functionality of the iPhone. For example, on an iPhone, the “iBooks” icon that is always shown at the somewhere somewhere of the Home Screen launches Apple’s mobile book reading application, providing access to a user's book library, store, bookmarks, and annotations.

Cross posting this from the EGM thread in Gaming:

The digital version of EGM is currently in a beta-test mode. There has been a lot of speculation about what, exactly, we're doing on this front and Apple's recent showcasing of it's forthcoming iPad has only fueled interest. What we've designed with EGM, however, is much more than just an interactive version of the print magazine. It is an entirely new product that literally brings content to life in ways that print magazines and websites just can't do. It also enables us to go deeper into the stories and profile games in a brand new way. In the weeks to come you are going to start seeing our new digital interface in action, complete with video, audio, downloads and more. It's a complex endeavor that required many months of hard work and, as we get closer to launch, I'll share more specifics (including how it will interface with the iPad and the next generation of tablets).

Sounds interesting. I have no interest in the paper magazine, but I might sign up for this.

:lol So negative. Let's at least see what they're up to before poo-pooing it.
Pretty much. I have very, very little care for EGM or gaming magazines in general, but I can definitely see how an electronic gaming mag could be pretty cool.. Think of it, basically a monthly roundup of gaming news, displayed to you interactively. New trailer for a game? Watch it right then and there. Want to see a pic in fullscreen instead of a thumbnail? etc.. there's some potential imo.

So what's the word on this? Can I tether it to my iPhone 3GS to get interwebs access anywhere? Been searching through the thread but only found it being mentioned in speculation.

What country do you live in?

Tethering isn't even something you can do in America right now (unless you're ninja).

Yep, the USA. Will it ever be an option?
AT&T has supposedly been working on this for awhile, but I haven't heard it brought up at all lately, so I'd guess not anytime soon.

If you've jailbroken your phone, though, there are alternatives.

Amazon was allegedly using e-books as a loss leader. So I can understand why they would be concerned about people purchasing them on non-Kindle devices.

Thanks to apple though, that may not be an option for Amazon :p

:lol Sure you could say that, but it would be ideally formatted specifically for the iPad to get the most content exposure out of it, i'd imagine. Definitely would be cool for newspapers... cue the transparent iPads.

More like iStrain.

4,000+ posts too late with that one.

The more I read on this device the more I want it. I just can't decide between wifi only and 3g but it would be stupid not to get the 3g model. I just don't want to wait any longer.

I've also been looking for a good device to read comics on and the app featured earlier in the thread looks spot on. I can't wait to see what developers are planning.

I'm getting a non-3G. I'd like the option to use it, but it won't come out in time. That said, I have my iPhone for every situation where I would be desperate to get online by 3G (not sure if I'd even have a data plan). I don't really see myself using the 3G all that often.

I wonder if there will be a way to sync save data between devices eventually. If Apple really are pushing this as another device, then I'd like data for saves to sync between. Hopefully developers can take advantage of the the new file sharing or something.

Yeah, I am thinking non-3G as well because I have my iPhone (2g, lol). I am never in a wifi area but I can't think of anything to really use 3G with on the iPad.

As for syncing, I would love to be able to mount the iPad to my iPhone to transfer certain data. I was also hoping for wireless syncing to my iTunes library so I didn't have to plug another device in. I want to have control over a single source, and all my devices automagically sync together so that whichever I use, the content or whatever is there. They will probably position MobileMe as that platform, which I don't want to pay.

you know, I keep telling my co-workers that this thing is a piece of shit. But every time I think about it there's a little voice that's saying "it'd be nice to have one."

Yeah, it looks sleek. I will admit that. But I also know I would be happier with a laptop or a netbook.

I don't see any reason to buy one of these outside of the "wow" factor.

I think it really just depends on your usage of a computer, really.
For someone who just casually browses websites and checks their email, etc, this is a much more cost-effective solution than a laptop and a more elegant choice than a netbook. And honestly, casual net users outnumber all of us by a large margin.
Personally, for me, a having a media center desktop and an iPad for take-anywhere viewing of that media content seems like a really amazing idea. The only thing I'd need to change to make it work is actually throwing all my video content into iTunes via Handbrake, but I'm cool with that.

:lol Good one!

Gotta have e-paper for long term novel reading. Comics should be good though, hopefully an app comes along for cbr/cbz comic files.

It works on my iPhone, but the user actions aren't done properly.

It's a good reminder of how stupid it is to have Photoshop-on-touch-tablet or Flash games on your wishlist. A cursor doesn't exist. You can't mouseover, and touch gestures can be misinterpreted as a system-wide generic gestures like scrolling the page.

It doesn't work for shit on my iPhone, since I can't draw, it only moves the screen, only thing it does is put dots on the drawing.
