They carefully assess the entire line, determine which models are likely to be the biggest sellers and analyse the costs appropriately.
For example, maybe the 16GB model is more like $519 and the 32GB $569. But they really want to bump the 16GB below $500, and they think it will be a big enough seller, so they bump up the 32GB to $599. Poor example, but they probably take into account all models within a product line and spread it out accordingly based on who they think they will sell, as opposed to just component increase.

On a positive note, I wonder what stupid blatant abusing app will be the first to make headlines that takes advantage of the larger screen? You know someone is going to try and capitalize on that with a quick app. I seriously mean stupid apps like the I'm Rich app or whatever it was called.

You know, Apple has attempted to pretend this is a serious platform with the launch of the iWork suite, but don't kid yourselves about notetaking or whatever.
Like all of Apple's products, the iPad is a consumer device. Maybe with the books and the newspapers they are trying to target the older demographics who don't wanna deal with traditional computers.

The bezel will reduce, you only need half that size, and i'd rather a thumb over a portion of a pic than a smaller screen. Make an optional digital adjustable bezel for people who want one

So I don't know the tech, but is it impossible to use a pen / stylus on this? would be great if you could use an optional pen for art applications.
Really, really disappointed in the interface, or lackthereof.
Despite the glorious 10" display, I look at that homescreen (and the lock screen) and see nothing but lazyness and a lot of wasted space. I should be running widgets of all kinds on the homescreen, and likewise get updates for email/news/weather on the lock screen. The iPhone app compatibility seems a bit half-assed, too. Let me run iPhone apps like I would a widget overlaid on top of the homescreen; I don't want blurry pixel doubling or have to look at a single tiny window in the middle of my beautiful 10" display.
No multitasking is understandable on a device as small as an iPhone (barely), but it doesn't fly with a device that can't be pocketed and is seemingly designed to be used lounging around the house on a comfortable couch. Don't give me the same capability as an iPhone which is something I can take out of my pocket in a second and check news headlines or the weather or sports scores and put right back in my pocket without missing a beat. The iPhone is mobile, it's small, and it's perfect at what it does. Also, why no voice-to-text? What Google is doing with that feature on Android 2.1 is great and I at least expected Apple to counter with something for the iPad as voice-to-text can work great for short text input. Overall, I think Apple stuck too closely to the iPhone experience with the software capabilities and I can only look at it as a half-assed interpretation of what a device the size of an iPad should be capable of.
Hardware-wise, there isn't much to complain about, but I'm absolutely baffled by the lack of a front-facing camera for video iChats and the lack of one just reeks of Apple holding it back intentionally so they can sell it to me as a new feature of iPad v.2. This isn't some kind of magic technology Apple, we all know tiny cameras don't cost a lot of money to build in, even the average Joes. Also really disappointed to see no GPS in the Wi-Fi only model. I don't mind the

Multitasking. Yeah. We all want that. I think for the most part I could live without, but I'd prefer it in. Even if it's a position int eh dock that allows for a background process of our choice. I don't mind if it cuts back on battery life by 40% - let us choose whether we want that. Just one app. This is a tablet, the battery life on the go is not as important as a phone.
I think it's limited by the fact that it uses the EXACT OS as the iPhone. They need to separate them slightly in base features.
16:9 is good and all, but it would look odd in portrait orientation, which I assume is the 'default' position (despite what Jony says in the ad).
I still want one. I wonder how the touch scales with iPhone apps running fullscreen? I hope most of the developers jump on the bandwagon and make their apps universal, or at least make versions that are specific for iPad.
