Apple iPad revealed

Part of what makes this feel like a Wii-type situation is that I get the sense that a lot of competitors have overshot the mass market with design and pricing. All of a sudden a new competitor is able to swoop in with something extremely sexy, unique and affordable.

When was the last time Apple released anything new that was competitively priced? I've got to imagine that Apple leaked the $1000 pricepoint to the New York Times specifically to lull its competition into a false sense of security, and now they'll either have to bleed to try and undercut Apple or go back to the drawing board.

It's kinda funny how excited I was about the crunchpad long ago and now apple releases something that blows it out of the water for the same price but I still don't have they money for either :(

ummm............................................

Like putting a fat lady in heels, is what that is.
Indeed. I felt that way all the way back when Apple introduced System 5. WTF do people give a shit about multitasking? 'It'll never catch on,' I said while playing with my toy cars and empty buckets. 'People, especially in my generation, only want to do one thing at a time, except for when it's with applications that Apple allows.' Hell, I do this even in my everyday computing!

I'm glad to see my view was finally vindicated with the latest mobile devices.

Also, god forbid a media player handle a variety of open formats without being :lol at. Although the irony to laugh about FLAC support while dismissing Flash as proprietary is somewhat tasty.

This was my favorite part of the whole event yesterday. Jobs called out the "pundits" for predicting $999 when it was almost certainly Apple who leaked it. :lol

Oh, whatever. I already ate crow on the Flash statement when I found out they were working on Silverlight.

In the end, Arrington should thank them for punking him. He missed his window and would have had his name attached to a dud.

It's not a Wii-type situation. It doesn't bring much new stuffs but nor challenge existing existing form and functions (maybe downgrade most of them, ha!), but instead repackages most of them into a Apple controlled experience while bringing the app store which should be its biggest selling point.

Unlike Wii, this isn't priced much lower than the competition, in fact, it's only low by Apple standards. The screen is the great and definitely very apple-ish, but the 1Ghz ARM processor variant isn't exactly something to scream about with much more powerful hardware out there that costs less as a whole. How is this affordable by any means of the stretch? Only if you wanted to buy an Apple product.

Oh man I can't believe it had only been one day since the annoucement. When can I buy one?!

Hmm. Neogag webapp that browses two threads at once.

I never thought of that. That's sneaky.

Exactly. This isn't affordable. This is affordable for an Apple product. this does have the other half of the Wii equation though, and when the price comes down some, I definitely want one.

technically all that MS is doing is intercepting when an ipod/itouch/ipad requests silverlight video content and switches the embed/stream to a format the device can read natively. that they're 'working' with Apple is nonsense since this is something Apple wants to happen and would have to specifically target to block. this won't work with silverlight apps like Bing Maps, only video.

What? What metric are you looking at for this when others in the same category are around a $1000? Again, this is like saying me bitching I can't get a new car for $2000 or something. I'm not sure why you guys think this should be as cheap if not cheaper than an ipod.

Underpowered by what exactly now? By the benchmarks we don't have? Seriously, stop going in these circle arguments about numbers that don't mean jackshit.

Not only do a vast majority of downloading sites don't support FLAC, but for anyone who really cares can just download a simply plugin for iTunes (which is what I've done).
Can you get the ipod itself to play FLAC?

Need to look into doing this for Zune.

When Wii was announced, some people were repulsed by its new ideas. iPhone had a lot of great ideas too. iPad? It's a lack of ideas. It's that necessarily a bad thing? No. But it's also removal of a significant portion of functions that people use (maybe only some people on neogaf lol) isn't exactly welcome either.

Did I say underpowered? I'm just saying there are hardware out there that is significantly more powerful. There are already articles out there that detail how this processor compares to iPhone. But, I'm not making a case for more processing power for iPad, it's more than likely that it does not need it at all, I'm just making a case for the price and affordability and how it compares to existing hardware.

I'm not going to make fun because I don't know for sure, but FLAC on iPhone is pretty :lol on the surface.
I don't care how powerful it is or what headphones you have, your not getting FLAC-quality results out of the iPhone and highly doubt on the iPad either.

MSI Tablet is the same price. As is the Archos A9. I wouldn't expect the HP Slate or the Notion Ink to be any less [than 400]. All these devices are 1Ghz ARM or Atom powered.

I can get a brand new laptop or netbook for well under $500. No, they don't do everything the same way, but a netbook can certainly DO everything the iPad can do.

This is a web appliance. I can get a portable device that lets me surf the web (and does a whole hell of a lot else) for less than $500. For crying out loud, I only paid $350 for my current laptop, and it has a dual core processor and 4GB of RAM. And I bought it over a year ago.

Do both do the same functions exactly the same way? Well, no. Neither does the Wii do everything the 360 does. It does do something in a more unique, more easily accessible way, much like the iPad make the web more accessible as compared to a netbook. The Wii, however, is cheaper than a 360. The iPad isn't cheaper than a netbook. I don't care if other "web tablet" devices that are coming are similarly or priced or more expensive. that just means this applies to them as well.

Still think it is a cool device, will still buy one when the price is right.

That's fine. They are all overpriced as well then.

But don't you get it? This is horrible price/performance ratio.

Drop the wii vs. 360 comparisons because they're out of place and just pointless. You are completely missing the point of this product if you try to measure it by those standards. My desktop is cheaper and more powerful than my laptop. My laptop can do what my desktop does so why would anyone buy a laptop? The appeals of this are the touch screen which the tablet can't do and the vast improved lcd for sharing and general watching. So yes it can do things a netbook can't if we're getting into this stupid argument.

I don't think the iPad is a lack of ideas. It's just that they designed the OS to be scalable. I think the appstore has been a runaway success, however.

For people who just like to surf the web in coffee shops, on the subway, or even at home this thing is perfect. In fact, the more I think about it the more I like this device. This thing is PERFECT for people who have been afraid to embrace the internet. In fact, I am considering getting one for my mom to use. Honestly the iPhone OS is probably a lot easier to learn from initially than a standard desktop.

Fine. I could get a netbook AND an iPod Touch for less than the price of an iPad. Best of both worlds!

And the iPad doesn't do anything, that I can see, that a netbook doesn't do. It does some things differently or better. It has a different interface. It is more convenient for the things it does do. Which is fine. Everyone has a different price they are willing to pay for convenience.

But really the issues is I already own things that do what the iPad does. If I were in the market to buy a new thing because my old thing broke (your car analogy, for example) that's one thing. I'm not, so iPad has to be cheap enough that I can justify it just to have another device that does the same thing I can do already, but a little more conveniently (compared to my laptop) or a little bigger (compared to my iPhone).

Doesn't a laptop make more sense in a coffee shop than an iPad? Don't you think it's much more relaxing and comfortable to read the internet while your laptop is resting on the table and coffee in hand compared to one hand holding the tablet while you have coffee in your other hand?

The iPad can sync to my main computer. Can any netbook do that?

~$350+~$230=<$500?

And you're completely lost if you're saying ipad gives the same experience as an ipod touch.

Well a netbook can BE your computer, but sure, there would be many ways for you to sync (wirelessly even) with your main computer, should you choose to do so. Just as I can sync files, contacts, and whatever else wirelessly right now between my desktop and laptop. If that's what you want to do.

In some ways yes. But I can image lounging around in a coffee shop, with the coffee on the coffee table. Browse to a page, then pick up the mug and sit back and relax.

Or, get this, using the other apps! the iBooks App, go to your favourite book, and just read. iPad in one hand, coffee in the other.

An MSI Wind is $299 at Amazon, Touch is $199 at Apple. I'm sure there are better deals to be had on a netbook.

And you're completely lost if you're saying the iPad is a completely different experience as an iPad. Definitely larger and in some ways more convenient, though.

Anyway, this is all so terribly silly. I think the iPad is a cool device. The price is even getting close to what I'd find reasonable for what it would provide me. No need for anyone to get their panties in a bunch just because I think it is a bit overpriced based on what it provides me. :)

So now you're just putting words in my mouth? And that is $500 not less unless you're just playing semantics. Where is the $200 netbook?

Sure it can. Synctoy comes to mind.

For clarity, I didn't mean it in the sense that it's something the iPad can do, I was actually asking if it could, because I didn't know. For me, I have a main computer, and I want to have media on a separate 'fun' device. I don't want to manage two separate computers.

For me, the iPad is a great device for this.

I've been wanting a good solution that synchronises files, or better yet, two entire computers (my dream setup would be something like an iMac at home, and a MacBook air to go, where I can use apps like iPhoto, and when I bring it back, I plug it into my iMAc, and it transfer the photos directly into the correct albums and tags to my iMAc or something).

*looks up synctoy* :( odds on it working for my Mac = 0

But yes, I guess that's kind of what I want to do. The more I think about it, however, the more I'm going to love the iPad. A perfect media synced device for my Mac.

I guess that's why I enjoy the Mac environment so much. It works well, when you work within the confines of their family of devices. And I do.

What? Mobile devices and Multitasking? Quite the contrary, esp. if your device has GPS - they fit like a glove. See apps like Locale on Android that can react to your location and other conditions (time, battery level, etc.) in realtime triggering a variety of tasks while you continue to do whatever else you're doing on the phone. Multitasking isn't just about juggling active windows, it's also about allowing application agents to go off and do their thing in the background.

There's no reason to coddle mobile devices like their batteries can't handle it. Android and Palm Pre OSes manage the overhead of multitasking handily, assuming you don't get carried away with too many apps running in the background. And even without multitasking, you can get into the same kind of trouble with just a single app chewing through battery worse than others do (and there's plenty of examples of these on the App Store), so it's not like keeping multitasking out of the picture assures that battery life will be good. It's 6 of one, half dozen of another - if you're a user that plays with apps without a care to how they affect battery life, it's liable to bite you on the ass one way or the other.

I'm okay with some kind of managed multitasking environment, something that would at least allow 2-3 user-selected apps to run in the background.

I think this is very possible in the future, but not with this iteration of the ipad. Maybe in 3 or 4 years.

What if I'm sitting in a lounge chair? What if I want to use it in line? And do you hold your coffee the entire time that you're drinking it?

Nah not necessarily. I could very well see someone sinking into a chair or sofa with this thing. The bigger screen also has the DS XL effect. In other words it will be much easier on older eyes. Besides, most people I know have their favorite websites bookmarked anyways. Unless you are doing serious work, you honestly don't need a full paragraph. Even most GAF responses aren't more than a few sentences at a time. If the keyboard is as good as Jobs claims, that may not even be a concern anyways. The slimness factor is also going to be a plus. And yes, it looks pretty stylish. It's going to be an eyeturner for sure.

I don't even know what it is exactly, as I didn't look other than to see it was listed as an Asus EEE PC. I know I've seen them and that was one of the first things that popped up in a search. Do your own research if you wanna know, but the point is $199 netbooks exist.

Front-facing camera= ichat = 1st party chat client= possibility of running in back ground. So many reasons why iChat for the iPad makes so much sense. As the only default chat client that is controlled by apple, it could be allowed to run in background, and if so, then more people might actually use iChat, enough so that it becomes more common.
