I gotta say, the annoyance of the wide bezel went out of my head pretty quick. Would have been nice for it to be touch sensitive as rumored but the size is still warranted for practical usage imo.
BTW, does anyone else think using the keyboard without having the keys actually magnify (ala iPhone) might feel weird? I noticed that the keys change hue but is that enough?

Expected, but it'll be interesting to see how this pans out.
potentially you'll have a more productive and enjoyable setupTerrell said:Hey, worked for me, I'm going out to buy the cheapest mini I can find as a home-base computer and will sell my MacBook to get an iPad, because using this much hardware for web, email, vids and budgeting is just a waste. iPad fills the gap for people that KNOW a notebook is more computer horsepower than their lifestyle actually requires.

Because if so, then iPad + (either the keyboard dock or a bluetooth keyboard) + bluetooth mouse = $500 dockable computer.
It could be bigger than a netbook competitor.
Why would you want a mouse on a touchscreen slate anyway?cjdunn said:I can't search the thread. Has there been any mention of bluetooth mouse support?

* Well, okay, $500 + $70 + $70

Oh, you must have fallen asleep during the iPad unveiling. You should go watch the whole thing, it'll make more sense afterwards.Liu Kang Baking A Pie said:Why would you want a mouse on a touchscreen slate anyway?
I can't figure out if you also fell asleep or if you've never had to use a spreadsheet. But if it's the former, Jobs showed off iWork during the presentation. If it's the latter, I question if you actually know what extensive writing is, because having a mouse is pretty handy for it, too.snakex said:The keyboard is for extensive writing, not to make it a desktop computer.
Did you fall asleep during the presentation? They redesigned everything for touch navigation. They're going to now put in a mouse cursor for you to click 1-inch square sized hotspots?Zachack said:Oh, you must have fallen asleep during the iPad unveiling. Well, it might be MORE appealing if you don't already have an iPhone or iPod Touch, but neither makes this thing unnecessary. But even owning those, it could be seen as a nice bridge between your ultra-portable iPhone, and your more cumbersome laptop. If you like relaxing in your recliner or laying in bed using your iPhone, then the iPad might just be the device for you.Mr. Durden said:So the thing with the iPad is... it's not expensive at all if you're looking for an e-reader with a screen that size, but if you've already got an iPhone and don't care for e-books, it's not really a big deal?
Yeah it really is a sexy device, and I find it more appealing than a netbook tbh. It's just that my iPhone already does the same thing, but just on a smaller screen. Still, it's hot.Steve Youngblood said:Well, it might be MORE appealing if you don't already have an iPhone or iPod Touch, but neither makes this thing unnecessary. oh, the info is bad. when you have no clue about certain factual information but go ahead and announce a precise value to it through god knows what conjectures, you fabricate information. if that's not bad info i don't know what is. if the author had any solid idea what the tech in the A4 was she'd not go ahead and say:Pristine_Condition said:Personally, I'm not sure if it is credible. Perhaps if the author had retrained herself and refrained from comparing Steve Jobs to Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbles in the article, she'd sound a tad more unbiased.
...
I'm not saying all the info is bad, because no one knows what's inside the A4 heatshield outside NDA Land, but all the contents of the article are supposedly still all sourced from unnamed "industry insiders," and we all know how that goes in terms of accuracy when it comes to Apple. PA Semi was very much in the same vein as Apple in terms of secrecy before they were folded into Apple's chip team as well.
Update #1, January 28, 2010 22:22 GMT/UTC - Following the request for comments, we were incline to update the story. First of all, we do not have concrete information about the number of cores inside the Apple A4 "CPU that it isn't" i.e. A4 SOC. /so they don't know the first thing about the SoC an 'insider' would tell you/ We were told that the ARM licensed its CPU and GPU technology to Apple./who'd have thought that apple had an ARM architecture license?! it's only been widely hinted at for years now/ That's it. Out of that technology, Cortex-A9 is intended for manufacturing in advanced manufacturing process such as 45nm /and so is samsung's A8-based SoC. apple have been using samsung's SoC for the idevices till now - does that mean the ipad runs on a samsung A8 SoC?/, 40nm, 28nm and so on, while Cortex-A8 doesn't have advanced video processing capabilities that Cortex-A9 has./huh? i wonder what advanced 'video processing capabilities' can a _CPU_ have, beyond the rudimentary SIMD/ As the time progresses, we'll know more about what LEGO brick components did Apple use to create the A4/sure, given how you've proven that beyond any doubt/. One thing is certain - it uses ARM IP throughout the silicon. Don't shoot the messenger./how about some target practice?/

MPEG LA announced today that its AVC Patent Portfolio License will continue not to charge royalties for Internet Video that is free to end users (known as Internet Broadcast AVC Video) during the next License term from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2016. Products and services other than Internet Broadcast AVC Video continue to be royalty-bearing, and royalties to apply during the next term will be announced before the end of 2010.

You can't really sit in your lap and you have to hold it up with one hand. Looks cool but not very practical.

I don't feel particularly tied to apps I've typically paid no more than $.99 - $2.99 for.numble said:I still think owning an iPhone or iPod Touch is in the end going to drive many people towards the device. Many people are tied to apps that they've purchased from the App Store, and many might have a favorite or niche app/game that they use a lot. The developer will put forward an "enhanced" version at probably no added cost if they own an iPad, and so people are driven to the iPad to get the "most" of what they paid for for their app.

If you feel like you get regular use out of most of those apps, then that's obviously a different case and you may have a valid investment that warrants the migration to iPad. But I don't think most people view spending in such small increments that way, aka as part of a larger investment vs. just as disposable individual purchases. It's like buying a coffee or a candy bar.mrkgoo said:I've spent close to $300 in apps, mostly 99c :/ So I feel kinda tied.
