• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Are you going to buy PS4 Pro?

Yes, and I don't even have a 4k TV. You don't need one. Sure, you'll miss out on HDR, but you'll still benefit from a downsampled 4K AND Andrew House himself said that devs are being asked to make 3 versions of their games:

An OG PS4 version
A 4K, HDR PS4 Pro version
An upgraded version for 1080 and lower users (better graphics/4k downsampled)
(I know none of these are guranteed, but see below)

That and the fact that I am also getting the PSVR which will be amazing paired with the Pro. It'll be nice to use it on an OG PS4 for a month, I suppose.

Only if my PS4 dies , also do not own a 4K tv and Sony hardly talk about 1080p tvs / resolution benefits from PS4pro.

I thought PS4 pro would deliver 1080p 60fps with full effects and its not clear this will happen.

I'm not sure what to think anymore, I really don't need one soon because the best looking games aren't coming out anytime soon but ... the technophile in me wants one just to have one.

That doesnt exist, we have no details and im not so sure if Sony would end their generation after 2 years, would anger consumers.

Scorpio doesn't exist either other than a target. Which will be less of an upgrade from this than this from the OG PS4.

According to Sony the PS4 Pro is still part of this generation, which started 3 years ago, so 2 years is very likely for the PS5.

Also, Sony is beyond "angering consumers". They already did that with the Pro.

The severe lack of upgraded power, no 4k UHD drive and a horrible conference unsold me on it.

Maybe my opinion will change when the platform matures but at this point I'll wait for Scorpio.

Scorpio doesn't even exist yet, it might be 5._TF by the time it comes out rather than 6 which would still qualify in a MS hype video as ~6.

My guess is that the Pro extended the gem to at least 2020 if not 2021.

I have it preordered and will most likely buy it but if whatever improvements to visuals and/or frame rate performance on Battlefield 1 look underwhelming I might cancel. I'm really mostly only interested in Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 as far as games coming out in the next 6 months or so, and I expect Titanfall 2 to run just fine on the base PS4. Hopefully there will be plenty of digital foundry and similar analysis on Battlefield 1 running on the Pro before it hits the shelves to make my decision easier. I'm expecting at least a bump to 1080p with stable 60fps and maybe a few effects turned up but we'll see. Maybe that's asking too much for a game releasing before the Pro and with Sony sticking with the somewhat underwhelming specs.

I was considering it but I think I'll stick with my XB1S until Scorpio comes out. The graphic bump would be nice but I'm not super interested in Sony's first party games beside UC4, and I can't stand the DS4...

Yes, the price is right and since I'm sticking with Playstation, I might as well have the best experience. I even like the PSTriple kit kat design of it.

My TV is still waiting ...

I mean, I can see where you wouldn't be keen to upgrade if you already own a PS4, but why the hell wouldn't you if you don't? It's only $100 more for a good bump in power, 4k streaming, and double the hard drive space. Lack of a UHD player is baffling coming from a company that makes 4k TVs and 4k blu rays, though.

No thank you. If I had a 4k TV I'd consider it, but I don't play my PS4 enough for a questionable performance upgrade on my HDTV. I'd rather put that money into my PC which I play a lot more.

I won't be buying one. I don't even know when I'll own a 4K TV. I only have my consoles for exclusives anyway and I'm more than happy playing them on my 1080p monitor.

I meant to also say in my post a few spots above that with Sony going with the somewhat unimpressive specs in favor of something better at a higher price point, even though I'll probably buy the Pro this year there is a very good chance I move over to Scorpio a year from now and either get rid of the Pro then or just stop buying games for it. Had Sony instead sold something closer to the supposed 6 TF Scorpio, either this fall at a higher price or next year at $400, I would have been more likely to skip the Scorpio and just play on the "close enough" PS4 Pro, if that makes sense.

Nah. Don't have any plans to get a 4K TV and feel like I've barely got any use out of my launch model.

Bracing for devs to start favoring Pro so I'm basically forced to buy one, though. Ugh.

I have it preordered, and will keep it, BUT I'm not thrilled. Biggest things for me is the 1 TB hard drive and the lack of a UHD bluray player. I know the hard drive can be swapped easily, I did it for the PS4 in my living room, but it's just the fact that I have to grab another 2 TB and relearn how to do it. With games already coming in at times north of 50 GB, and now adding 4K capabilities, and some of these patches around 20 GB, as a launch PS4 user with a 2 TB harddrive, Im already deleting stuff. Sure, Im not playing everything on there, but its nice to have. Like NBA 2k16. Over 50 GB I believe. But I only play it when a certain friend comes over once every 2-3 months. I dont want to reinstall the game and the updates EVERY time. And now, I buy almost everything digitally.

Maybe. I'll wait and see what the third party support for NX is first. If that's empty (Western wise) then I might get a Neo as we need another console in the house.

How much is the Scorpio?

Oh yeah no details..

Scorpio doesn't exist either other than a target. Which will be less of an upgrade from this than this from the OG PS4.

You guys are reaching, Scorpio has been officially announced with a release period and some of its spec's/motivations defined. Its coming next year. There's nothing apart from your own assumptions about PS5 and its release period, so it'd be illogical to set expectations on this baseless information. We have no idea of what it will be or when it'll arrive.

Fair enough, but its not enough to make a decision, Sony are launching PSVR which id assume would need more than 2 years worth of games to mature and grow.

No. I see absolutely no reason or need to buy one when I already own a PS4, 4K or not. It helps I don't have a 4K TV either at the moment but I don't see a reason why I'd need to fork out the money on it in the foreseeable future.

*shrugs*

I have it pre-ordered.

I'm waiting to see what games/developers patch for it. Destiny is my main game, so if Bungie patches it, there will be no second thoughts.

House stated that pro version will be made with two displays in mind, left me hopeful.

I don't believe I will be purchasing one. The deal breaker was Sony not including an Ultra HD blu-ray player. I'm assuming that's the only way they could keep the price at $399.

After the press conference I went from extremely hyped for the Pro to disappointed

-doesn't run games in native 4K
-can't get framerate benefits in multiplayer games
-doesn't play 4K blu-rays
-Slightly better graphics in single player games/modes

To me that doesnt justify spending $400.

Funny thing though, before Neo/Scorpio were official, and it was mostly negative outrage over iterative consoles, the PS4 Pro not being some huge leap over PS4, coming in at the same starting price, and basically not being anything that’s necessary, is exactly what everyone said they would want.

Now, everyone is saying it’s not enough because MS changed the perception?

Can’t wait to see what the more mainstream audience thinks.

God, I hope not. Beyond muddling the market, we don't need these mid-gen frankensteins holding us back even longer with their shit CPUs.

It would have been 2019 or 2020 regardless. These units are just to pass the time for those who get impatient with the base models becoming more compromised, like FF15 and a few other games showcase.

-doesn't run games in native 4K You should have known that
-can't get framerate benefits in multiplayer games was going to happen and we already knew this from the first leak
-doesn't play 4K blu-rays i cant defend this
-Slightly better graphics in single player games/modes it depends on the developer.

My rebuttal.

I have a great 4k tv, but it doesn't support HDR. Am I fucked? Will the Ps4 Pro still let me game in 4k? Should i try to sell it and get one that has HDR?

I'll pass for now. I made the decision to switch to PC as many primary gaming device once the mid-gen upgrades were announced.

I was going to buy it just to have it but no UHD 4k drive is unacceptable. If I'm buying it, I'm buying it for 4k across the board and that includes media. I'll just have to settle for the Xbox One S.

You'll be able to game in 4k but no HDR. Honestly, I woudn't have a 4k TV without HDR. That's a big selling point.
