ARMS Global Testpunch Thread: Let's see if this has LEGS

Ended with 72 points. I played as everyone except Spring Man. I used the controller, because the motion controls felt really uncomfortable for me.

Minmin is fun, her dragon arm power up is neat. I couldn't get the timing down on the kick to deflect people's stuff.
Ribbon Girl is jumpy and fun and I love it.
Master Mummy is the scrub killer. Like a grappler if you don't know how to play properly you're in for a rough time.
Helix's guardian arm combined with the ice dragon felt dirty. That is some really strong zoning tech.

Couldn't really figure out ninja boy and helix. I tried mecha girl but she seems to have a float/hover? Not entirely sure on her. I'm between Minmin and Ribbon Girl currently as my main.

Quick impressions:

Controller style

It seems like you can do pro controller just fine. From what I could understand, you're committed to the state you are in when you throw a punch... like, they plant you when you throw the thing (or, if you're dashing in the air or whatever, you're committed to that motion until it ends), so you use those frames to input the direction you want to curve a punch in.

(essentially, your movement isn't really fucked with when you throw something out since your movement options become limited whenever you throw something out anyway... so if I want to twist arms in various directions, I input punch - direction - second punch -second direction)

I like pro controller because movement didn't feel cumbersome like it did with motion controls.

(also, a lot of my opponents were weak because they didn't move around enough)

1v1v1 or 1v1v1v1

Fucking terrible modes. I think I taught my room how to camp because it's the only strat that makes sense when there's more than 2 teams. It's probably the lamest shit we will play during this entire test run.

2v2

Really interesting. Throws can actually be interrupted in this mode by teammates, but landing one bodies the entire team because of the tether mechanic. I can see this having its own standard at tournaments.

Wakeup options

I did this stupid thing in a few matches where I would meaty someone's wakeup and they would get put into a throw loop... I'm pretty sure you can roll on wakeup in various directions and it's probably what counters this.

Cancelling things with Super

It's as stupid as you would think it is lol

I did this one thing where I was jumping around, exhausted all my movement options in the air and was about to land into an opponent's super combo... but then I cancelled my recovery and popped super in the air and ending up bodying him lol

I would think you would have to play fairly defensively whenever you see the opponent's super flash going.

V-Ball

Really cool, but I noticed that people forget after a point to play it like tennis, so I would camp on a far end and put the ball where people aren't standing at... it's funny to do this since you can kinda scam by hitting the ball when it comes out at the beginning of each new volley... and if they're not in the place where they need to be, you essentially 5-0 them.

That said, I'm not sure, but it seems like you can power up the ball by hitting it a few times before sending it over. But I'm not sure and all I can tell is that there's a spike mechanic and I hope someone figures it out lol

Ribbon Girl

Double jump is nice. Essentially, you get one air dash with each jump, so you can really randomize your movement and make yourself hard to hit. Also, she gets an auto-charge after landing from a double-jump, though I didn't take advantage of this a lot.

All in all, I really like the game. It's fairly easy to pickup and the mind games are fun.

I need to try the pro controller next time. The motion controls were perfectly fine but I've always been so bad at motion controlled games. I'm too fidgety. Movement was my biggest issue.

R I B B O N ! Love you guys!
Topped two lobbies with mostly her (tried Mummy and Minmin too), lost few FFA and one match against Minmin, but it was a close one so I'll hold on to my honor. Really pumped up for this game, first was kinda weird use the motion controls but then realized the correct way to perform things and they kinda clicked.

Did anyone figure out the "secret way" to use alternative colours? Guide said there's apparently some, I only got different colour with duplicate characters.

Thoughts on the game:

I'd like the ability to remap controls.

Other than that, it's absolutely AMAZING. I love everything about it. But especially Mechanica, who is the best. Just the best.

So did anyone else hold the Joycons wrong for their first match? I had them face each other in a Joycons grip-esque way rather than holding them in my fists. It was truly magical

*raises hand timidly*

Figured out I was holding em wrong about 4 matches in and actually started winning some. Was ready to say the motion controls were busted before I find out I had the right joycon backwards like a dumbass.

Disregarded the motion controls and went straight to controller. Didn't lose a match as min min.

I wonder how long the shelf life will be since it doesn't seem that deep aside from movement options.

Finished with 69 points and played exclusively with motion controls.

I had fun but I really don't understand why couldn't they make ZR the special move button and ZL like a Z-targetting button to switch between opponents in free for all. Why wouldn't that work?

It's way too chaotic and random like this.

1v1 was good but I think characters with more mobility are automatically OP due to making grabs much easier to pull off.

Motion controls + lag = the most frustrating set of games I've played.

When there wasn't lag, the game worked really well. I wasn't planning on buying it, but I'll keep an eye out for the new fighters as they're added and hop in later in the year.

Did not love it as much as I was expecting. I mean I had a good time but the controls were more difficult to wrap my head around than I had anticipated. Still, I'm eager to participate in the next rounds. I'm no quitter lol.

Started about 10 minutes late. My room was nothing but Ninjaras, myself included, then i tried out Min Min. Never going back. Im shocked i got the highest score in the room though.

Tried out Spring Man, Ribbon Girl, Min Min and Mechanica. Mechanica is my favorite out of that group at the moment. She feels slow but it works for me. I struggle against the damn Ninjara's though. The jump and grab they do is a pain in the ass and only towards the end was I finding a way of getting out of the way of it and punishing it. There was a good mix in the three lobbies I was in for the hour though. To many Ninjara's though but he is beatable.

Mechanica's hammer is good in the 2v2 fights though but worthless in the V-Ball. The damn dragon arm is going to take some getting used to. I couldn't figure out how to use that effectively in a 3 way fight or even a 2v2 fight. Never got to use it in a 1v1 where I think it might shine.

Yeah, I saw your posts. It's really weird lol, I played the entire hour and had zero issues. Granted I was a couple feet away from my router but still.

helps to be using a lan adapter im in the USA and i didnt get any disconnects.

I'm in the next room over, its not like I'm on the moon or in my deep sea base. All my other devices never had any problems, I'm just aghast at the Switch's wifi.

Does any Lan Adapter work or is the official one the best bet?

V Ball is way more fun that I expected. Setting up spikes is way more satisfying than it should be. I wish the mobility was a bit faster as I'm used to Gundam VS speed, but all in all really enjoyed it. Was top of my room with 60 when I left for a bit to take a break. After coming back before it closed for maintenance, the motion controls really clicked. Mechanica with her mobility and Helix are so good. Do want to take Min Min for more of a spin as I'd like to practice timing those kicks. No issues with disconnects as well. Online was solid.

I'm encoding some 30 minutes of gameplay, so hopefully I can get that up later on. ^^

I really love motion control in this game, and I already preordered the game three months ago or so. This demo just solidified my purchase even more further.

I was really surprised at the basic punch arms. Their spark charge attack is basically a free grab/super if you land a clean hit on the ground. By far my favourite of the avaiable arms on Ribbon Girl

Had a blast with the firs testpunch. I did ok I guess. Only ended up with 50 points. Played with just motion controls and they felt pretty good to me. Did go into panic mode a few times though and just started swinging. Dodging punches and punishing feels great and I had some really close intense matches.

Played with every character and I'm not sure which was my favorite. Guess I'd say I did best with Ninjara or Master Mummy. Just sucks that everything was starting to click and then the testpunch ended. Will try regular controls next time.

Overall, I think I'm going to really dig playing the full version. Didn't leave my initial lobby and my name was Rudeboy. If anyone happened to be in that lobby, thank for the matches and the ass kickings!

So did anyone else hold the Joycons wrong for their first match? I had them face each other in a Joycons grip-esque way rather than holding them in my fists. It was truly magical

I did and it wouldn't surprise me at all if a bunch in here did the same but won't admit to it. Or never realized they were holding them wrong and just assumed the motion controls sucked.

I felt like motion controls, once mastered, would become pretty badass and quite essential for high-level play, since you can really take advantage of shot leading using gyro. At first I had a tough time with "two stick movement, but without actual sticks" while managing curved punches and throws, but now the whole thing feels like second nature. Kinda like Splatoon in a way, where the best players surely make use of motion controls, but newbies get pretty confused. An example: apart from my sister, I still don't know anyone in my circle of friends who can play Splatoon using gyro. She and I wipe the floor with their butts, though!

Managed to finish the round with 79 coins. Not too shabby for someone who didn't do jack in his first 7 minutes or so! 1v1v1 is hella tricky, I always get caught up and straight up murdered for engaging too soon and too actively 😅.

If a poster says a game is $80 or $90 or any other denomination above $60, you can safely assume they're in another country. Canada, for example, currently has games priced quite a bit higher than they are in the US. GAF has members from all over the globe.

Yeah, but I just forgot how ridiculous the prices are elsewhere. If games were 90 dollars here, I wouldn't have bought so many games that I just wanted to try out.

Oh yeah, another reason why 1v1v1 is stupid is because you can go into a throw loop.

Player A throws B, C throws A, then B wakes up and throws C. I had a round where we did that from ~50%hp and it didn't seem to be a way to get out of it. It was hilarious in a bad way.

My favorite match was when I was playing Mechanica and went down to "I can't see my own life at" health and then proceeded to knock off 2.5 bars of Master Mummy health to win.

Also people should stop trying to use Master Mummy's "Throw me for free." power.

Lol I didn't have a problem with it, its all about knowing the distances and being able to react in time while still regening as much HP as possible, I'll be curious to see how good he'll end up being once more people figure out all of the characters though but I dominated with him.

I really liked the game but after playing (only with motion controls) I'm sort of afraid I won't be able to get my money's worth for the time I'll play it.
Sort of like how after a Battlefield beta will satiate me perfectly on the series until the next beta.

It feels like a solid, polished game, but one that I know I wouldn't play for long enough to justify the price. I got plenty of wins on both 1v1 and the other modes but those other were way too hectic for my taste. Hope it does well, but it's definitely not for me.

I really liked it. I think the controls will take some getting used to as I still couldn't reliably get the curve I wanted on some of my punches. V-Ball was pretty mediocre to me, but I think that it would be better once I get a little more time to understand the impact of strenght and curve of each of my punches. 1v1 was by far the best mode, especially on the Helix arena shooting punches out from behind the pillars using the boomerang-style weapons was so satisfying.

I had a comeback and beat a pretty good Ninjara 1v1 using Helix. Next game was 1v1v1 with him included and he just went after me all the time. :(

To be fair he probably couldn't figure out how to switch targets. I didn't know how to do it until I came on here and read how to after the test punch was over.

Tried for few minutes, surprisingly pretty fun and addicting. Got until 53 credits.
Never won any v-ball match, the closest to win results in draw because the last seconds ball somehow fall into my side.
On 1v1v1 match I always wait until one opponent dies, and beat the other.

That said, I'm not sure, but it seems like you can power up the ball by hitting it a few times before sending it over. But I'm not sure and all I can tell is that there's a spike mechanic and I hope someone figures it out lol

Hitting the ball with a 'throw' makes it rise up to a hovering location allowing you to spike it.

I was a few milliseconds too late, but it said I had a 30 win streak and got...+5 credit lol

I had zero interest in this game. I watched some tournaments but had difficulties understanding what was actually going on in the gameplay. After having some hands on, I gotta say I'm shocked by how much I loved it, especially after walking away disappointed in Splatoon 2 (both Shooters and Fighting games are my favorite genres, coincidentally enough). I like that the lobby randomizes who you fight. One match can have you tooth and nail against an opponent, or even a beat down, and suddenly you gotta team up to take down 2 others in the next match. I had one moment where I beat a guy in a close match, and then we were paired up in a 4 player ffa. He targeted me for revenge lol. It's the little relationships like that that really make the lobby system standout. And volleyball is a nice break from the action. I can see this being my new fighting game.

I only played with pro controller and the guiding was butt. One Min Min was avoiding everything in a 2v1 scenario. Gonna try out motion controls next. Should alleviate that lol

I did and it wouldn't surprised me at all if a bunch in here did the same but won't admit to it. Or never realized they were holding them wrong and just assumed the motion controls sucked.

I did the same. I knew I was doing something wrong but didn't realise how to hold them until I checked the help menu.

111 ARM dollars. Took a really long time for people to figure out how to be more mobile in the lobby I was in. And there was one dude who only knew how to throw.

Min min and Ninjara were the favourites. Really enjoying this game

Took me about half the hour to figure out the controls (why did I not realize the controllers are supposed to face each other?), but once I figured out the orientation I could control things mostly fine. That's one concern down. Mostly used Min Min. Didn't like the Dragon ARM much, but the others were neat. So far I'm liking it, but still just considering a purchase.

To be fair he probably couldn't figure out how to switch targets. I didn't know how to do it until I came on here and read how to after the test punch was over.

Nah, he was pretty good moving around and at one point I threw him to be near the third player, but he still came back after me anyway.

Posting this again because I need to know for tomorrow (bringing my Switch to a party) and I can't test this out myself because I only have my right Joy-con on me right now.

Nope.
