ARMS Global Testpunch Thread: Let's see if this has LEGS

1v1v1 is still my least favorite mode. 2v2 is a clusterf but still fun. V-Ball is ok just to mix things up from the norm, but 1v1 reigns supreme.

Somebody on reddit decided to check his heart rate while using ARMS with motion control

I don't expect really high review scores for ARMS, it's too much of a technical game and most reviewers probably don't fit that mold of gamers.

Since I didn't yet see this addressed by anyone else...

Also, guys, I might be confused, but if I recall technically not every character will be able to use EVERY arm, right? I mean, each character has thirty unlockabke arms exclusive to them, and while I'm sure some will be similar to those that another has while having a different element, I don't think each character could have access to all 3,000 ARMS, or am I missing something?

Every character will be able to use every ARM, and so far there are only 30 total in the game, those being the three "signature ARMS" belonging to the starting ten fighters. The unlocks you get from the ARM Getter are exclusive to equip on that character but it doesn't mean that it's a wholly unique ARM design.

i.e. Spring Man starts off with the Toaster, Boomerang, and Tribolt. By playing the game and gaining currency you play the ARM Getter and unlock for him, let's say, a Sparky and a Whammer. That means Spring Man can now equip those two weapons from his own grid too, but it's not like those unlocks are "Spring Man exclusive" in the sense that nobody else can ever use those as well--they just have to unlock them separately.

So what it means is, at the launch of the game, each of the ten characters has a 30-square grid listing all the currently available ARMS, with three already filled in. Which means, if you don't count duplicates, the game starts with 270 spaces not-unlocked among the full cast. If the trend of the starting ten is followed, each new character they release will come with three signature ARMS of their own, which will then be added to everyone else's unlockable grid too. Perhaps Nintendo will release standalone ARMS without a particular character attached to them, too, since I imagine there are a lot of attribute-variants and stuff they could throw in without much issue.

Last session of the weekend coming up in 30. I'm considering just going through the entire time as Helix, as I have probably the least experience with him outside of Ninjara (who I've used in like two fights and that's it, I have no interest in using him--enough people already are), and he seems to have the highest learning curve to really use effectively. I'm not looking at him as potential main material right now but it would be nice to get some sort of a handle on him.

I see. Thank you very much! So wait, considering we've seen ten characters, each with three signature ARMS, that means we have all already seen all the ARMS that are available in the base game, no? Considering that 3 x 10 is thirty and any one character can choose between their signature arms as well as the ARMS of every other character (once unlocked).

If that's the case, it seems the blorb is the only ARM for now that does blind.

Furthermore if that's the case and we've already seen all thirty ARMS available, I'm not sure how to feel considering most are the same ARMS but with different attributes and slightly different stats (Min Min's yellow Megaton being a Megaton with lightning but to counter that it travels slower than the Megaton).

even game informer likes ARMS..

expect a 6/10 score

EDIT: my bad thought this was new, its a week ago, so maybe there opinions has changed
Older or not, I don't like it when people act willfully ignorant or dismissive... I get that they're trying to be "funny" or whatever, but these conversations would be so much more engaging if they said, "the footage looked chaotic, but I did see genuine moments of strategy develop", because you'd have to be pretty dumb to not see that in this game due to the deliberate speed at which attacks occur. And that's coming from someone who has not played this game yet or who really likes fighting games either.

Also, I really do hope that there is a SP story-based component that is more than just you fighting the rest of the cast through a tournament.

Been absolutely loving my time with the Testpunch so far, and recorded a few gameplay sessions if anyone was interested but couldn't play themselves (or wanted a second perspective).

Here's the intro tutorial and first fight; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83G2xxwVehs

Here's some mixed gameplay; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO6cwsB07MY

Here's some of my better fights from earlier today; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W269soBRjLI

Hope it helps someone make a decision about the game, or find some new strategies. :)

Reminder that in the full game, the ARMS getter also upgrades duplicates. Still not sure how I feel about that.

It probably does not take effect on ranked matches or versus for tournament play. After all it does create unnecessary advantages unless every Arms gets maxed out easily.

Great if it's a pair you normally use. I hope if you max out the upgrades that it automatically turns into cash.

My worry is that it'll unbalance the game slightly. The direct showed only an increase of 10 damage (for that ARM), but that adds up even if it ends up being a one time upgrade.

Yeah, this is what I'm hoping for.

you might be surprised, im expecting 80's. alot of game critics on twitter are enjoying the game. remember, ppl were expecting splatoon to do not ok.

Yeah its great for that but might completly screw with the balance. I don't want to get assigned to an opponent who uses the same arms as me but deals more damage with each hit...

Yes, currently the only ARM that deals blind-effect is the blorb...which i'm okay with given how big the screen-smearing is and what a hindrance that can be. Having something like a "Goomerang" could get super-annoying super-quickly. :P

I think we have seen all the ARMS that are in the game from the start, though I suppose it's possible that there are more in there that aren't character tied that they just literally never showed off. At the very least we know the Grand Prix boss uses an ARM or two that hasn't shown up anywhere else. As for attributes and such, that's no big surprise to me. They've shown off previously how they have ARMS categorized into certain types (Glove type, Curve type, Whip type, Heavy type, Mulit-hit, etc.) with specific ones having particular properties or element-attributes to differentiate them. It's not unlike, say, Splatoon, where you can group most of the guns into specific categories (Shooter, blaster, roller, brush, charger, etc), but within that there are a bunch of variations that have the same basic behavior, but different stats and subweapon loadouts. ARMS is going in that direction and I think the amount of customizability to come out of that shouldn't be overlooked.

Everyone is raving over the main theme and the vocals when honestly that damn whistle is the best thing in the main theme TBH XD

I love those small sounds and such in the background of songs that not many people prioritize too much

I'm doing much better with the Pro Controller. Managed to win 2 fights in a row, 1vs1 and 1vs1vs1. This game is fun!

I wish there was a way to hard select motion controls or traditional. Playing with split joy-con grip the game sometimes seems to switch between the two at the worst times.

edit: wow for real, what the fuck Nintendo. You never expected anyone to play this game in tabletop mode?

The throw meta is getting a little over the top. I've had ninjaras just not throw punches until they have a chance to counter. Had two timeout draws in a row.
