Attractive/fanservice design in video games

A straight guy looking and sexualizing a female characters is degrading and disgusting.

A gay guy looking at and sexualizing a male character is brave and should be applauded.

Am I doing it right? May I join Resetera now?

You didn't call for a boycott in the first example. We don't platform bigotry shitlord.

It depends on the kind of game you want to make.

Maria in Silent Hill, Mileena in Mortal Kombat and Hana in Fear Effect are oversexualuzed for sure, but in the context of the game it makes sense.

Vice versa, an almist naked female character in a war/rpg/fighting game where the "armor" is just a g-string and bra takes away from the immersion and credibility, imo.

Personally I don't find 3D models sexy at all, so dress or undressed virtual women have no effect on me, but I can see why some women might be annoyed/teased by oversexualized 3D models as another form of woman objectification, which is wrong imo, and I am not even a feminist.

Plus, NeoGaf should stop mirroring silly Reboot Age's threads if it wants to grow up and improve as a site and community.
Over there, everything is about women being enslaved and subjucated by evil penis-owners, nazis trying to take over the world, EU being Heaven on Earth, and everyone who even slightly agrees with non-left politicians is a serial killer. Plus, whoever is not a black transgender is a horrible human being.
NeoGaf should be a safe harbor, nit a twisted version of that site.

My opinion on this is pretty simple - if I want to see ugly people I go for a walk or look into mirror ;) For games and movies I like to see a better version of reality so I want to have people rendered in them to be above average for both sexes.

Newsflash, the only people who don't like attractive characters are prudes, and you aren't part of the target demographic anyway. Have you seen the sheer numbers of women who choose to cosplay as "sexualized" characters?

It depends on the context. I don't like them if it marginalizes the story and mood, for example, imagine instead of playing Ellie in The Last of Us, you're playing some hot chick that's always sporting a bikini for no reason, but for games like Bayonetta or other games where the oversexualization doesn't take away from the game, then it's fine.

Quite frankly, if SJWs are up in arms about it, they should fight the porn industry first.
Great post. I agree with this. Context is everything.
But even if not... who cares? I'm all for artistic expression. If Kojima wants a character like Quiet in his games, let him fucking have it.

Good looking characters are great but they can be oversexualized. Would you want characters like Quiet in every game?

I have no problems with devs making sexualized designs. I just mostly avoid them personally as they're not to my taste.

The only time it slightly bothers me is when they're shoehorned into a game that doesn't otherwise have them like Quiet in MGS5 as they just seem out of place when it's just a character or two in a game.

Thanks, another thread on NeoGAF about 'SJWs' and 'toxicity' is exactly what everyone needed. You're doing God's work.

High-quality input right here. You could have made the thread better by arguing your case against the OP in a number of ways, by calmly explaining yourself and why your views should be attended.

No. Instead you've decided to drop by to drop a two-liner complaining about the thread tout court. Does it ever occur to you that one of the reasons your side is losing the intellectual debate is because, so self-evident your beliefs are to yourselves, you don't even bother to explain them and argue and win over at least those sitting on the fence?

Each thread, including those you strongly disagree with, is an opportunity to make a case. Who knows, perhaps you have none.

(btw, i don't support the alt right and I'm about as far left as one could possibly be and not be labeled a terrorist)
Some people need to be wrong in this world, we forgive you

I take it 5 was your first Metal Gear game?

Is there a problem in sex between consenting adults? Is terre a problem in a ficcional character choosing to walk around in sexualized fashion? Why?
Some, but not all, of the criticism waged at sexualization betrays an oddly puritan view that entirely voluntary sexual behaviour is some how reproachable. Again, why?

Side-stepping the moral issue, I'd say it boils down to the aesthetical question. There's a number of ways to depict sexuality I don't find appealing and others which lure me in. Additionally, games which aim at realism must also take into consideration that sexualized behaviour is part of the human repertoire of ways with which we interact with the world. In such cases, depicting sexualized , even oversexualized characters is a not just a choice but a necessity.

If Kojima wants sexy babes in every single one of his games, then yes.

It's his legacy, not mine. I don't get to dictate what he creates or leaves behind. If I feel it is not to my taste, I simply don't buy it...

oversexed thinks in games are most time just dumb. They do nothing for the game and are just implemented for male players who ... (most times)
e.g. Final fantasy 15. It is just to obvious what the developers intended. For me it was just a dumb decision to let cid look and pose like she did. It did nothing for the atmosphere. It just killed it for me.

btw, mgs5 also to much (and to obvious and she isn't even attractive (looks really unnatural)). It just killed the atmosphere completely.

Maybe they keep their beliefs to themselves, because what they post with such robotic parroted responses, they truly do not believe in... while secretly watching porn themselves. ;)

Say what now?

Man, I must have imagined all those perfectly physiqued men in every single video game and action movie ever growing up and gaming for over 35 years.

Preach, brothers, preach!
I was banned for a week in the echochamber for speaking my mind and was labeled a pedophile for liking Talim's design in Sc6. One user even made a case that ppl who agree with the design have watched too much loli hentai or somethin' and we are desensitized to stuff like that... well, sorry to be blunt but I'm too busy effing and having a life to care about such juvenile stuff.
I betcha most of these Sjw's and feminists are actually either super prude or go far in the other extreme.

Saw the thread and my mind went straight to Lara Croft and that god-awful 2013 reboot. Why couldn't TR2013 just have been a new IP, why did they have to retcon Lara into some basic version of the bad-ass character she already was.

Attractive females in video games are not just good, great or acceptable, they are WONDERFUL!

And they should keep be in games, regardless of what a small, vocal, offended by pixels minority thinks about it, and the majority that likes them say or type.

To have this conversation today means that our divide in communication is so rabidly escalating.

NEVER FORGET!!

I really don't mind fanservice and woman or man in revealing outfits, I couldn't care less actually. If the characters in question are compelling, have interesting quirks to them or are just badass, they can dress however they want. They can even go to the fucking beach in revealing bikinis during their downtime, or play silly games inbetween missions... I don't care! (like the shitstorm VC4 is currently generating for including such scenes).

As long as that isn't the focus of the whole game (like e.g. Gal Gun), include as much fanservice or sexscenes (like in The Witcher) as you want.

What's my side?

this thread would have received a lock and several warnings and bans would have been given out before the migration.

Freedom is a beautiful thing

Shows how desperate GAF is for clicks nowadays lol

The one which can be deduced from the pattern of your terse replies on this kind of threads.

I've got a comfy sofa in the middle mate.

My best is female and she looks sexy female characters in video games. Has a tattoo of Morrigan Aensland, loves cosplaying Morrigan, Lili from Tekken, among many others, and just got a Kasumi from DOA outfit.

Anyway, here's me playing Tekken 7 the sexy way.

This thread is disgusting. How dare you arrange pixels like that! We need to create a moderating committee that evaluates all female pixels and ensures they are to standards. Perhaps some sort of limiter could be put in place that counts the number of skin tone or itty bitty outfit female pixels in a game and automatically puts in blurry pixels instead once the limit is hit. Male pixels are fine as long as they get slaughtered in the thousands in game by the player character.

fan service is fine when your game is about the fans service but if you all of sudden have a half naked lady when everyone else is covered up then you have problems. It's the reason cindy and the weird armor lady from ff15 bother me, they just don't really fit with everything else but that armor lady would fit right in with Bayonetta and Cindy would fit in with DOA. It does have me thinking about tifa from ff7 and advent children. Her basic character is a martial arts bar girl with gloves but in advent children she is pretty much covered up and doesn't really fit with the game's character. So the question will be will we get a Cindy like character for ff7 remake or the Lightning type.

Yeah, I'm desperate for clicks like Polygon, cause EviLore pays me for each thread.

I wish he would

The latest Tomb Raider games have been the best in the series.

So the OP has been recruited and groomed by, whom?, The Owner?, to start clickbaity threads? Yes, it does seem plausible.

Why won't you come to terms with the fact oother people have opinions different from yours and interests different from yours and act on them? Maybe it's because if you frame it as a trick to attract clicks you'll be able to geta away without ever saying so much a single word on the topic itself.

Third consecutive post and not a substantive word on the topic. A pattern indeed.

Lol when did I imply that GAF had recruited OP to make threads? That's very funny .

My comment was in reference to the fact that, in the past, some of the comments in here would be more moderated (I already notice the title has been renamed because saying 'oversexualised females in games is okay' is very silly x

Don't really have much of an opinion on this, over than the 'over sexualisation' of any sex should never be normalised or commended. People are free to 'enjoy' whatever. Sharing GIFs and images of attractive video game characters is pretty lame
IMO but fair play if that's what people are into

Sharing GIFs of attractive video game characters is lame or they are lame? Enjoying the view of naked women in PlayBoy or some other, more XXX rated scenarios, is lame too?

Well, males are almost always oversexualized in videogames and it's never been considered wrong so why wouldn't it be "fine" if done with females?

The usual "go-to" excuse for those types is that all those men that you see? They are all power-fantasies. They are not sexualized in any way, shape, or form and only serve to make men feel like they are strong, burly, and can do anything.

Dramatical Murder's cast, Voldo, Snow - these are characters that I have seen a *ton* of "oversexualized" fanart of by men and women over the years (with many more that I could pull from). However, they cannot be sexualized as they are all supposed 'power fantasies.' If they are called out on this weak excuse, then they fall back on the age-old "but men design all the women" to show how "sexist" and "perverted" the designs are. It is mostly just idiocy.

So, you don't like fanservice so you come into a thread and stink it up until someone calls you out on it? C'mon mate, do better. Also that "SJW/Toxicity" that was mentioned? That was all in jest and a light-hearted jab at how these topics used to run and are still run in modern gaming journals. I thought I would mention that as you seemed to fail to understand its context.
