August 28, 2009. A day that will live in infamy.

My favorite album of theirs is The Masterplan. Not really a studio album per se but damn is it good. Their B-sides stand alongiside their best work (Champagne, Rock & Roll Star)

The Noel songs (not just the written ones but the ones he sing in) are my favorites. The importance of being idle, Talk Tonight and Going Nowhere hit me hard all the time. If he starts doing solo albums I would not mind at all, its been a long time coming.

didn't realize they still existed, other than wonderwall and champagne supernova, their songs didn't really get any exposure over here

sad
?
day I guess :/

they're dicks, no doubt, but this entitlement attitude is just silly. i don't think musicians or entertainers make any promises and they don't owe their fans anything. they make music, you give them money for music, you're even.

You do owe them something if you've announced a gig that people paid for

oasis fueled the hate first, so... what do you expect?

But... Bloc Party ARE indie shit. And zomg he punched the art brut guy? What a thug

Are you somebody's dad? Jesus Christ, cranky old man.

Can't stand this attitude tbh. Why disparage someone just because they prefer older music? It's possible to just prefer it and not care that it's not in fashion

And I am in my 20's single, don't try to stereotype just because you don't like the band.

Terrible band with one decent song, no real loss.
Besides, these guys do this shit all the time. They'll be back together by the end of the week.

They haven't made a good album in like ten years. This is not a big loss.

Plus, the band has had a bazillion false breakups and lineup shake-ups before, so they've cried wolf a few too many times for me to take this seriously regardless.

Correction: Fourteen years since Morning Glory. I'd hate for anyone to think I'm a Be Here Now defender.

they put out a good album last year, but keep being a mindless sheep.

this double-standard is ridiculous anyway.. nobody said that about MJ when he put out Dangerous 20 years ago.

Noel makes a statement via the website a few minutes ago.

Dearly beloved, it is with a heavy heart and a sad face that I say this to you this morning.

As of last Friday the 28th August, I have been forced to leave the Manchester rock'n'roll pop group Oasis.

The details are not important and of too great a number to list. But I feel you have the right to know that the level of verbal and violent intimidation towards me, my family, friends and comrades has become intolerable. And the lack of support and understanding from my management and band mates has left me with no other option than to get me cape and seek pastures new.

I would like firstly to offer my apologies to them kids in Paris who'd paid money and waited all day to see us only to be let down AGAIN by the band. Apologies are probably not enough, I know, but I'm afraid it's all I've got.

While I'm on the subject, I'd like to say to the good people of V Festival that experienced the same thing. Again, I can only apologise - although I don't know why, it was nothing to do with me. I was match fit and ready to be brilliant. Alas, other people in the group weren't up to it.

In closing I would like to thank all the Oasis fans, all over the world. The last 18 years have been truly, truly amazing (and I hate that word, but today is the one time I'll deem it appropriate). A dream come true. I take with me glorious memories.

Now, if you'll excuse me I have a family and a football team to indulge.

I'll see you somewhere down the road. It's been a fuckin' pleasure.

Thanks very much.

Goodbye.

NG.

So uhh yeah.. Liam is a fucking dick.

This is no big loss to YOU idiots, but believe it or not, they have more fans than just the ignorant lot in north america. Because you don't hear about it all the time like whatever pop radio or mtv feeds you doesn't make it less significant to their fanbase around the world.

I listened to my copy of Definitely Maybe this morning. Supersonic may be one of the worst songs ever written.

"I know a girl called Elsa, she's into Alka Seltzer..."

Really Noel, really?!

God dammit it's really over then. Fucking Liam, I love and hate the guy at the same time.

Yes, really. The band was on drugs, they wrote non-sensical shit and knew it and admitted it several times without apology, but it was a kick ass rock n' roll tune, didn't know all lyrics had to be meaningful poetry that have heavy insight into the world. If you only look at the lyrics, yeah they are shit, but the way song's whole comes together, it rocks.

"I am eatting eggs, they are eatting eggs, I'm John Lennon,
Goo goo ga joob"

REALLY LENNON?! ONE OF THE WORST SONGS EVER WRITTEN

Way to be judgmental. I love Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory, but the fact is that after that their albums were wildly inconsistent and the band itself was addled by too many drugs and too many lineup changes. And Oasis did make it over to America, you know. We just didn't give a damn.

I'm American and this is an idiotic sentiment. The shit that is popular in this country is embarrassing.

The crap you the country gives a damn about these days is nothing to be proud of sans Oasis.

Well said. Really regret that I didn't catch their gig earlier this year.

Sorry, lyrics that goddamn shitty interfere with any redeeming qualities on the musical side. They really didn't even try for that one.

I question what if anything from Oasis you liked, minus the usual answer of Wonderwall for you to have an actual copy of Definetly Maybe.

Sounds definite. Damn.

Lets no get crazy here. Oasis was never big in the USA but it was quite big in a lot of places. These dudes could sell out stadiums easily. I had never seen an arena so packed until I saw Oasis.

Noel was very nice when he came to town. He signed autographs and when he played he was godly. Cant say the same for Liam who wouldnt talk to anybody and would get off on stage several times out of nowhere. He was also quite erratic.

I have found lately on this tour the opposite has been true, Noel has been tempermental about signing shit or taking photos with fans, while Liam will be glad to do this... i guess you gotta catch em in the right mood or day.

This shit is going to get ugly I'm afraid.

Noel didn't just single out Liam, although I'm sure its 98% his fault. He's also took his other bandmates and management to task for not supporting him. I'm sure we'll be hearing their sides very soon.

It's so easy to rag on Liam cuz he has the rep, but we don't know the full story... Liam has done shit and Noel has always eventually forgiven.

I heard a rumor that Liam smashing Noel's fave red gibson ES-335 guitar the night of the french gig when they announced they broke up.

Liam has said some downright nasty shit about his family members and his kid, but smashing a guitarist's guitarist is tne final insult. I had a dream a week or so ago about the exact ame feeling...except I dreamt Jimmy Page tried to destroy my guitar, and I was like "WTF kind person are you smashing my guitar, for a guitarist?!?!"

:(

Even though I always was more in the Blur camp, I still appreciate what Oasis achieved, they made some amazing stuff and left a big mark on music.

Was their headline slot at last Saturday's V Festival their final appearance as a band?

I was there.
They weren't as good as Lady Gaga.

No. They were actually gearing up to release their new album 'Dig Out Your Soul" which would come out months later in October.

But I suspect that wasn't a serious question with your spoiler joke.

I bought it when I was 15, thought Rock n Roll Star was a good song. And Wonderwall sucks, She's Electric is the best song on that record.

I will lighten in my time, wtf it's only been a day since the announcement. Give me a break. The 2nd statement released by Noel really cements it now... and it seems he is not just upset at Liam but the whole band for not supporting him for whatever spat they had.

Haters gonna hate.

Umm... you can look at it from two perspectives. One, it's actual cocaine and it's being used as a metaphor or that she's so desperate to get high but can't get nose candy so she was sniffing alka seltzer instead since it looks like it. I don't see the problem? It's about addiction.

Aristotlekh said:

Some did, some didn't. They still as of last year were selling out arenas in the US. I honestly believe those who said they hadn't make a good record since Morning Glory simply never listened. DBTT and DOYS received very solid reviews and were highly regarded.

Obviously Masterplan is one of the best albums of all time as well if you wan't to just go in terms of album release date.

Kastro said:
not even remotely similar.

He's talking about in quality in his view, not musically. They are very very different musically obviously. However Weezer do love Oasis, and I think I heard at least Liam likes them back.

I love Oasis, their newest album was almost on par with the stuff from their glory years. Disappointing, but I can't say I'm surprised. :(

Stupid lyrics ruined Supersonic for you, but you can get over

"She's got a sister
And god only knows how I've missed her
On the palm of her hand is a blister"

? :P

God I will miss them. Just saw them a year ago in London, Ontario before Liam's voice went to shit again.

I knew that bastard would be the death of Oasis.. I still love Liam's voice and his rock attitude, but for fuck's sake he needs some anger management.

Medalion said:

it's still not even close.

rivers is singing about beverly fucking hills these days.. its insulting to even compare them.

this was funny...from August 27th

Liam Gallagher's sister-in-law – former All Saints singer Natalie Appleton – says Oasis will never split up. She revealed that the band were "devastated" they had to cancel last Sunday's (August 23) headline appearance at V Festival Chelmsford due to Gallagher being ill, and scoffed rumours that they are on the verge of splitting. "Oasis will die before they split up… they're going to go on forever until they are old men," she explained. "The rumours are absolute rubbish. Even in his sick bed Liam was vowing to get back on stage." She added that Gallagher was "so happy" that Snow Patrol and Keane covered Oasis songs at the festival (Daily Mirror).

Part of the hate stems from the use of a phrase describing the attack on Pearl Harbor in which over 2,300 Americans were killed and marked the official entry of the United States into WWII, to describe the break up of some brit-pop band that hasn't been relevant in the US in over a decade.

Yeah, the title was a bit over-dramatic.
