Not really. There are a massive ton of Chinese and Indians here. I guess Lebanese too? I dunno about them. Most are fine. I've been friends with plenty of people from other countries including Indian, Sri Lanka, Korea, ect and none of them ever came across racism that I knew of. Maybe Melbourne is less racism that Sydney or something? I dunno but I know a lot of people who don't cop shit from people.

I've heard plenty of stories of foreign people being targeted in America so it's not like Australia is the only one. I know one person who said America seemed really rude towards them for being a tourist.

Crocodile Dundee and Romper Stomper were the only Aussie movies I saw growing up so that's what I assume all of them are like.

Also I remember being taught in school that Australia had a "whites only" immigration policy up till 1975 -- no doubt we were told this to show that other countries are racist too, to diminish the horror of the US's racist history.

I think most Americans grow up being taught that our country is good and tolerant, at least through elementary or so (Civil War was fought to free the slaves, etc). A lot of it is bs, but I don't think it's necessarily bad. It instills the ideal in young people and a self-image of tolerance, which hopefully then leads to a more tolerant population.

Depends where you are from. Certainly around Newcastle and the surrounding suburbs where i currently live there is A LOT of racism. I think i heard it is the least multicultural place in Australia.

I have lived in a few other places which weren't much better.

I have lost a few friends because of racism. I don't know why but wherever i live i always end up making friends with most of the people i meet from overseas and i have real trouble remaining friends with people i know are racist.

Citizens of A take the immigrants very openly (as you can see in this thread). In most cases the immigrants get everything for free, apartment, food and even some cash monthly. Also there are laws to enforce positive discrimination.

As for the subject at hand, I rarely encounter racism outside of harmless joshing among my friends (who are a mix of asian and white mostly), most were born and raised here and more "Australian" than me (whatever that means). But I live in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, so take that as you will.

The most recent racism I've encountered is from my boss at work, who refuses to hire Indian people....and he's Chinese Australian. He's probably suffered through plenty of the same racism but he does it himself.
My mum makes the bigoted comment here and there but they are never malicious.

When I went to China I became friends with many Americans, and most of them were making derogatory jokes towards African Americans but I know that most Americans aren't like this.

So basically racism is everywhere, and If you're gonna take one instance of dumb racists being dumb racists and let that impair your view of an entire race....then whose being the racist now?

I agree with that, it's not racist to tell people to adapt or get out if they don't like the way things work in a certain country. What I was talking about was the whole "our culture" thing which I admit I got hung up on. It just made me snap because here in Canada for example where racism is subtle and not in your face, native people get treated like dirt most of the time and the jokes never stop. And all you ever hear on the talk shows and stuff is how they need to integrate into "Canadian Society" and stop living on reserves etc.

Yeah shit happens and the losers have to mix in. But I hate the attitude that us often portrayed by not just white people but other races as well who believe their way of life is "the" way of life and then start crying about the influx of Asians, Blacks, and especially Mexicans in the U.S.

All of us came here from other places and have just as much a right to live freely wherever we wish without hypocrites telling us to "go back where you came from" or asking us how long we've been here for. Not a single white person in Canada has the right to say that and vice versa.
